As an Irish person whose country was on the receiving end of Britain “barging in and helping everyone “. A huge amount of issues are hangovers from Britain’s vile and rampant colonisation -see Rwanda to name just one. “Barging in and helping everyone” is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve read about the British forces on here . Please read up on your history and the impact it has had globally .

So you think that phrase was meant literally? Ever heard of the the concept of irony?

I have an MA in history, thanks, from the days when degrees WERE degrees. I think you need to check your historical facts before being so rude, angry and arrogant on the basis of poor reading comprehension.

Read my post properly and calm down.

I thought we more colonised and stole stuff as opposed to trying to tell them how to run their own affairs.

We did a fair bit of both! Britain used to be called the world's policeman! From about 1815 for a hundred years or so the navy intervened in a lot of global conflicts, suppressed piracy and things like that. There was also a squadron that intercepted slave ships, freed slaves and resettled them, as well as pressuring other countries to end slavery. As well as all the colonising and stealing stuff of course! History is complicated!

What should we do? A crusade against the islamists? No thanks.

While I agree with the sentiment, it has to be said that Rwanda is Belgium's mess, not the UK's.

Germany and Belgium. Not our circus.

Rwanda wasn't a British colony. It was German/Belgian. The Belgians were vile too.

Amen to that! 😀

Not wanting the UK to get directly involved doesn't mean we don't care - quite frankly, 'western' countries cannot afford to keep gettting involved!

Pharazon · 15/09/2025 16:16

Speaking of 'the world's policeman', developments in Haiti - Trump has taken an interest and has said that countries that contribute a peacekeeper force will be viewed 'favourably' by the US, which as far as I can work out means Canadian and European boots on the ground in return for less punitive tariffs.

Menier · 15/09/2025 18:11

I do personally care op, as I’m sure do many others, however I’m not in a position to do very much to make a difference.

Haiti is not so interested in foreign "help" as cholera was reintroduced to Haiti in October 2010. It is widely believed to be the result of contamination by infected United Nations peacekeepers deployed from Nepal who came to help after the disastrous earthquake earlier that year. Since then, cholera has spread across the country and become endemic.

I don't think that the opinions of the Haitian government (such as it is) are of any interest to Trump.
