It gets more of the headlines definitely.

I must have missed the bit where the UK government is actively supporting the SAF (or is it the Janjaweed?)

florasl · 15/09/2025 10:42

You also never hear about Yemen, arguably the worst crisis in the world. It is expected almost 1 million people will die by the end of this decade, around half from starvation or lack of infrastructure. Half of the population don’t have enough food and 5 million people are displaced.

You hear about Yemen literally ALL the time in the news, as the West are heavily involved due to the shipping lane disruption, not to mention multiple military interventions by the US, UK, and KSA in support of the Yemeni government.

RampantIvy · 15/09/2025 10:46

The charity I volunteer with raises funds to help the locals dig wells in Ghana. We fund Aquaboxes which filter water to make it potable and we fund Mercy Ships which provide medical care in West Africa.

LifeisCruelinAfrica · 15/09/2025 10:07

Could it be worse than it is in Sudan? 150,000 plus dead and over 12 million displaced.

Yes it could be worse. There could be that… and then a regime taking over like in Afghanistan.

Pharazon · 15/09/2025 10:48

Honestly this entire thread can be summed up as "I know nothing about something therefore it doesn't exist." Or else it is just a roundabout dig at UK supporters of Palestine.

IsawwhatIsaw · 15/09/2025 10:49

There is no longer the appetite, public support or money to get as involved as we did.
conflicts nearer to home seem more pressing.

I agree it's coverage is much less than that on Gaza. Extremists in both countries mean neither will probably be peaceful for years to come.

That's really great.

I've friends that visit The Gambia and offer help and supplies to villages. Small scale but they help each year.

People are fed up with extreme religions killing and harming each other in Africa. We have enough problems at home / on our doorstep to be worrying about Africa.

If the people on this site feel so strongly, jump on a plane and see how you are received by the locals. This being allowed an opinion nonsense won't be tolerated.

For giggles, what do people suggest is done? Send money/aid that will be stolen by the government? Arms that are needed in Ukraine? Send missionaries to educate and convert?

Many reasons but some spring to mind

There are no obvious good guys. Both sides are beyond awful.

Both major parties to the conflict- the official Government and the RSF - are being funded and supported by foreign powers, mainly the UAE and Russia.

Its complicated.

ERthree · 15/09/2025 10:58

What are we supposed to do ? Even if we put boots on the ground we would have to be there for decades and when we leave they will just go back to fighting. it is tribal and none of our business.

JHound · 15/09/2025 10:59

Pharazon · 15/09/2025 10:31

Saudi Arabia has contributed over £3Bn of aid to relief efforts in Sudan ffs.

Don’t you come in here with your filthy facts.

Africa is a continent. OP is talking about one country: Sudan.

The UK holds notional oversight for Sudan. It is the ‘pen holder’ in international response. Not sure if it is due to historical colonisation or how that is decided.
The reasons the ‘west’ intervened in postwar conflicts was a mixture of guilt, wanting to prop up pro-western rather than Moscow friendly governments and interest in natural resources.
The former two less of a concern now. And without a strong US they can’t hope to do the latter.
Aid agencies have been knocked by Trump’s cuts, are aware of compassion fatigue and it is v hard for journalists to get into Sudan so it isn’t on the radar

reesewithoutaspoon · 15/09/2025 11:08

For the nearly 60 years I have been on this planet there have been wars conflicts and famine within Africa and other middle Eastern countries.
It's horrific but change needs to come from within those countries, we can't keep pouring billions into these countries to end up in the pockets of their 'leaders' , we can't absorb those who want to leave and we can't overthrow their leaders.
Apart from marching, waving flags or donating to refugee relief what can we do?
There have been continual protests for Gaza, what has it achieved? Unless the political leaders have a will to change it,it continues.

Nigerian Christians are persecuted every day and many are murdered but the media stays silent.

They only tell you what they want you to get het up about, Ukraine, ‘Palestinians’ etc. The media spoon feed the masses bias and lies and the masses lap it up.

Onthebusses · 15/09/2025 11:22
