Faking a protest - utterly pointless.

I was at the last night of the proms. I go if I can be bothered to get through the process of getting a ticket.

I've been a handful of times in the last few years. This time was pretty exceptional.

If any of you saw it, the entire auditorium is filled with EU flags and people wearing EU berets.

If you watch it, it looks like a staged protest. It looks deliberate that all these people brought these flags with them to make a point, and it always looks like that.

But here's the thing every single time I go there is a pressure group that attends. I'm sure many of them don't even have tickets to the event. I think they attend just to hang around outside the hall and hassle, people actually going.

They come armed with masses of EU flags and these hats and they literally don't leave anyone alone handing them out.

The queue starts forming for the arena and gallery quite early before five pm. This pressure group, don't stop combing the queue and approaching anyone they can to hand out these free EU flags and hats.

Most people just take them because they're being handed out for free. Especially if they haven't brought their own flag So they've got something to wave. Equally I saw a few of them had been thrown in the bin.

But this group is so persistent, it actually gets quite oppressive. I think in the hour I was in the queue, I told somebody from this group. about five or six times no thank you to an EU flag. I voted remain but enough is enough, the vote was nearly a decade ago.

Watching the Last night of the proms it looks very much like a protest with all these eu flags filling the arena in particular. But here's the thing there was no organisation there.

None of these people brought those flags with them. They were literally handed out by the same pressure group that attend every year and don't leave people in the queue alone constantly trying to push these flags and hats onto people. I could see a few people took them just to be left alone and then threw them in the bin later on in the queue.

What is the point of creating a fake protest or making a fake statement that isn't actually there.

None of those people got up that morning and decided they were all going to bring eu flags to the last night of the proms. Virtually no one had brought one with them. They were all handed them out by a group in the queue for free. Almost no one decided to take a EU flag to the proms.

presumably the Royal Albert Hall is happy for the EU flags to continue
thank god on saturday it wasnt an array of union flags

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 15/09/2025 14:24

There have been flags waved during LTOTP, both EU and every other denomination for as long as I can remember.

I saw them on Saturday night but was a bit too busy blubbing at the Bohemian Rhapsody tribute to pay them much attention.

timetochangethering · 15/09/2025 14:41

I wonder how we are in the situation where a minority of people are "shouting" so loudly, Palestine, Europe, Trans, Far Right, Far left..... all minorities and yet getting a LOT of coverage.

Neemie · 15/09/2025 14:46

Too much flag waving at the moment.

margegunderson · 15/09/2025 14:51

Hello Nigel.

Fluffyholeysocks · 15/09/2025 15:08

I can't get worked up about a bit of EU flag waving - its not going to change anything, we're not going to have another vote and we're not going to rejoin. If a pressure group want to waste money on cheap EU flags and berets - fine. I think most people see it for what it is - an organised stunt. It's not going to change anything.

Things change over time

We may get another vote and we may rejoin. The vote taken almost a decade ago is not the be all and end all of the UK's relationship with Europe

It's rather arrogant to presume you know the future

YouMightThinkThat · 15/09/2025 15:23

This thread was started disingenuously and the OP actually is a prize winning melt.
As for the late-to-the-party Reform worker ants - words fail me.

mummyoffourminimes · 15/09/2025 15:34

I was watching on the telly. It was bloody brilliant but I was also confused about the people waving EU flags so thanks for the thread explaining! It did look a bit ridiculous and totally out of place. The British isles has a good selection of flags to choose from, none of them anything to do with the EU.

i say this as a remain voter who married an EU citizen and birthed 4 more EU citizens. DH was also very confused by it.

It seems weirdos have commandeered all the flags 😢

It’s rather arrogant to assume they’d have us back!

We will never be able to rejoin under the same terms as we left. I would imagine a condition of joining would be to adopt the euro. I can never see us rejoining under those terms.

Agreed, it's unlikely we'll rejoin in the short to mid term, and even if we do. It'll be with a worse deal than we had previously

Just goes to show how damaging Brexit was and is

Bumblebee72 · 15/09/2025 17:53

Isn't done in an "Ironic" way. Waving the EU flag whilst singing: " Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves, Britons, never, never, shall be slaves". It's almost an anthem to Brexit.

Sorry to be picky but the words are
Britannia rule the waves.
It"s an exhortation not a statement.

Your point still stands 😁

I know what you mean OP as I attended a couple of years ago and the pressure group was there then, this has been going on for a few years. I think the aim is to get as many flag and berets on TV to make it look like there is an appetite for EU membership.

Most British people living in Britain don't give a second thought about the political bloc and the pressure group will be back through the Eurotunnel today onto the continent giving themselves a pat on the back for a job well done.

Let them have their couple of hours of fun. No one cares. Rule Britannia!

But it isn’t tolerance or diversity when citizens of this country aren’t even allowed to wave their own fucking flag! Where is the tolerance?

Where aren’t citizens of England/the UK allowed to wave their own flag? They’re all over the place, lots at the Prom.

There is an appetite for EU membership. Quick google will confirm that for you.

NormasArse · 16/09/2025 11:10

They do it at LNotP because of the harm Brexit has done to musicians’ freedom of movement.

"Not allowed to wave their own fucking flag". Lol. Dry your eyes, I only see one snowflake on this thread!

I’m referring to the proms, about which this thread was started. Keep on topic old chap.

Ah right. I was confused because as NO-ONE WAS BEING STOPPED FROM WAVING THE UNION JACK AT THE PROMS I assumed you must have been referring to something else. But it turns out you were just making stuff up and then getting cross about it.

Have you ever considered that if you have to lie to prove your point, maybe your point is bollocks?
