Parents said my maternity photos were “erotic”

I had maternity photos taken on the beach when I was pregnant. I live in Australia and am from NZ and recently my parents came to visit us and meet our baby. I was looking through photos and my dad said that the maternity photos were “erotic” and my stepmum agreed. My brother asked what we were talking about and my Dad was like “you don’t wanna look at them, they’ll make you blush”.

I sent the photos to them after I had them done months ago and I thought they were so lovely and special. They were taken at “our beach” where my husband and I swim in summer I am wearing a dress in all of the photos and my bra is covered, with the buttons down the front undone to show the belly. My husband and I don’t see anything erotic about these photos at all and I was shocked that they thought that. I feel really awkward and embarrassed now that I sent them to them if that’s what they thought about them!

Is this a weird reaction to seeing your daughter’s maternity pictures?

Sorry I'm just non plussed by the fact you seem to think having "maternity photos" taken is normal. And that it's normal to inflict these on other people!

It's bad enough seeing publicity type photos in the media of " baby bumps" without other women jumping on this ridiculous band wagon.

I’ve seen some maternity shoots before where the women are in clothes that show some pants / bra, lots of leg or see through long dress etc to show off bump and it did look a bit boudoir even though that wasn’t the intention at all

But you've just learnt that your dad and his partner have different comfort levels.
Be glad you know this now rather after you've sent them newborn photos of breastfeeding etc

Really? This is very very normal here in Australia. My husband and I go for a walk every evening along the coast at sunset and it is rare to not see maternity photos being taken, often we will see two separate couples having them done

and if you live in Australia you’re probably a lot more used to being in a swimsuit / on the beach than us Brits, it’s cold over here most of the year!

Your parents obviously found them uncomfortable to look at. Either they're really prudish or the photos were a bit icky for your parents. If you were cuddled up with your oh and looking sultry, it probably is the latter?

I don't especially like maternity shoots, but I would go "oh how nice" if anyone showed me theirs and move on with my life.

Having said that I think these type of photos are for the couple...I don't think others are particularly interested or bothered about seeing them.

I dislike maternity shoots - it's like 'oooh look at me, I'm the first woman in history to be pregnant - aren't I speshul?' Take them for your own memory book, by all means, but please don't inflict them on the rest of us. Having said that, when I've been forced to look, I make the appropriate noises to pander to the woman's ego, just to be polite.

Hahahaha no!!! Nothing like that 🤣💀 literally my husband is wearing a long sleeved shirt and trousers and I am wearing a maxi dress but undone at the front to show my belly. Bra is not showing. I am absolutely not nude. I guess I just don’t find a pregnant belly erotic and didn’t expect other people to either!

Oh come on. That’s like saying wedding photos are like ‘we’re the first people ever to get married’.

Grandparents are usually interested in pregnancy/ grandkids.
