Parents said my maternity photos were “erotic”

I had maternity photos taken on the beach when I was pregnant. I live in Australia and am from NZ and recently my parents came to visit us and meet our baby. I was looking through photos and my dad said that the maternity photos were “erotic” and my stepmum agreed. My brother asked what we were talking about and my Dad was like “you don’t wanna look at them, they’ll make you blush”.

I sent the photos to them after I had them done months ago and I thought they were so lovely and special. They were taken at “our beach” where my husband and I swim in summer I am wearing a dress in all of the photos and my bra is covered, with the buttons down the front undone to show the belly. My husband and I don’t see anything erotic about these photos at all and I was shocked that they thought that. I feel really awkward and embarrassed now that I sent them to them if that’s what they thought about them!

Is this a weird reaction to seeing your daughter’s maternity pictures?

This thread is so odd.

Maternity photoshoots are definitely becoming a thing here!! It’s not for me, and I personally find it a little cringey, but quite a few people get them done.

Id keep them to yourself though, it’s not really something parents would be interested in

i know billions of woman of other woman have had babies before me but for some reason I did feel very “speshul” while I was pregnant lol 😝

Edited

Sshhh! So did I, but don't tell anyone I admitted it. 😄 However, I didn't boast about it by insisting on oversharing intimate pictures of my very large pregnant belly.

Whateverwillwedonow · 14/09/2025 14:11

My dd had some absolutely gorgeous maternity pics taken, she looks stunning. It’s not something that I would have considered doing but a really nice way to celebrate her pregnancy and to remember just how beautiful that time was.

The use of the word erotic to describe your daughter’s pregnant belly is quite disturbing.

Google beer belly maternity pics for some light relief folks. Eg https://www.boredpanda.com/20-hilarious-beer-belly-maternity-photos/

😂

You weren't pouting as well I hope, people can't seem to help it when posed photos are taken

enwarall · 14/09/2025 14:12

If your dress was unbuttoned all the way down from just under your bra, it sounds like your legs thighs and knickers were in view? And presumably small, attractive knickers for a photo shoot? Maybe that’s what they found a bit much?

I have a DIL who is pregnant.

I understand that you and your partner would want them because it’s a special moment for the two of you but I have to say I fondly sharing it odd.

I would tell you they’re lovely and then me and my partner would shove them in a drawer and not look at them.

I don’t look at your belly when you’re not pregnant - not in a posed, showing off the bump, gazing at it adoringly kind of way. And I’d find it just a bit. Ick. As if I was intruding on something intimate between you and your partner.

sorry. Coz I know that’s not what yo want to hear.

Don’t be sorry, I am interested in what people think. Maybe it was inappropriate to send them on my part. I don’t know, I guess I’ve been desensitised to it because we live at the beach and I see people getting them taken in real life literally most days so it seems very normal to me and I do not find pregnant bodies sexy or erotic but I do find them beautiful and amazing and feel like they are something to be celebrated

I think the baby bump photos have become a bit naff.

i totally get wanting to have nice pictures. when I was pregnant, I made sure I had some pictures- but mainly to show DC when they were older. I didn’t do the professional photoshoot as they all seem a bit staged and tacky. They remind me of those 1980’s glamour photos of people’s mums photographed through a haze of Elnett

It’s become an ‘event’ - a bit like gender reveals and baby showers. These have all become part of the ritual, but mainly as another way to extract cash out of people.

i also think it plays into the whole narcissistic world of social media. It used to be something that celebs would do for a magazine cover.

Cherryicecreamx · 14/09/2025 14:16

I have done maternity photos, I think it is a lovely memory for myself. I don't think I've actually shown anyone tho! Some people might think that's pointless but it is to capture a moment that I can look back on.
My family are quite conservative and so I really can't see me posing with my belly out and showing them 🙈 I think my dad would feel a bit weird about it if I sent it to him. We're still their little girl in a way!

PistachioTiramisu · 14/09/2025 14:16

I really cannot understand why any pregnant woman would want to show this type of photo to anybody other than her husband/partner! You're pregnant, so what - we've seen it all before.

Crispyturtle · 14/09/2025 14:16

So you were cuddling up with your DH with your dress undone. And you can’t imagine why someone (especially from an older generation) might find that uncomfortable?

One of my friends posted hers all over Facebook. She was in unbuttoned jeans and a lacy bra, and her DH had his hand resting at the bottom of her belly. TBH it looked like her was about to finger her, it was grim.

Okay thank you. This is exactly how I feel.

Really? This is very very normal here in Australia. My husband and I go for a walk every evening along the coast at sunset and it is rare to not see maternity photos being taken, often we will see two separate couples having them done

Where on earth do you live in Oz that you're seeing this every day?

Petrolitis · 14/09/2025 14:19

LibbyOTV · 14/09/2025 14:01

I think this is a tricky one. I can see why that's embarrassing but i sort of see what they might mean.

Think of it as the difference between you sitting pregnant on the beach in a plain swimsuit with no makeup on eating a sandwich and the photo you sent them - assuming you were wearing a decent amount of makeup, and had revealing clothes showing your body and were trying to look lovely. That's the difference I guess and why you might call that erotic.

I think sexualising ourselves and our bodies as girls and women is so normal nowadays that we've lost touch of what we're doing (e.g. pouting or sticking your bum out) - and how obvious it is to everyone else that it is about looking sexually attractive (even if were not consciously doing it). Think of women in older black and white photos- also taken by a photographer, as yours were.

Those who are not used to this new hypersexualisation + constant photos, like other generations, are the ones who point it out. These may look like the kinds of photo that they and other people today would only send their lover...

Does that make sense ? Hard to know without seeing the photos though!

It is awkward they said that but also good that they could and that you know now I guess?

This is really interesting.

I saw a GAP advert this week. We all know the GAP advert dancing format.

The latest better in denim campaign is just so sexualised compared to GAP adverts of the past. So depressing.

Oh God. You've just reminded me of the photo DH took of me, pregnant and largely naked, back in the 90s. A less erotic image of a 20-something scantily clad woman would be difficult to imagine. Nobody should ever see it, least of all me, but the image is burned onto my retinas. I'd look sexier now, 30 years older and several stones heavier.

I love thinking that my DIL is growing a baby. I cried buckets when they told me.

but a half naked photo sticking her bump out with a dress open to her breakfast? And my son gazing “adoringly”?

it’s really not for me.

Also I think this is the equivalent of an engagement photo shoot- will completely divide opinion!

and if you live in Australia you’re probably a lot more used to being in a swimsuit / on the beach than us Brits, it’s cold over here most of the year!

You haven't seen lasses out on the lash in Newcastle!
I remember waiting for someone in lashing rain and high winds and a group of young women went past me and teetered into a bar wearing tiny tight skirts and crop tops. I was in awe, I tell you!

I don't think I'd be showing anyone photos of me in a dress unbuttoned all the way down to my stomach, pregnant or not.

Calling them erotic looking isn't really weird if that's what they thought they looked like.

Jackiepumpkinhead · 14/09/2025 14:22

No idea why you’d send photos of your distended stomach to people anyway. Grim.

Ketzele · 14/09/2025 14:22

You were lucky. When I was heavily pregnant my father, who I barely know (he left when I was a baby and I've seen him maximum once a year since) found out and begged to take some maternity shots (he's a photographer).

I thought oh that will be nice, and maybe I should be bonding with him, so I went to his studio just a few hours before I went into labour.

The resulting photos... well, let's just say that one of them featured me balancing a cup and saucer on top of my baby bump. Cheesy. And that is the one he featured on his storefront. And that an astonishing number of people I know saw it there, and rang to take the piss.

Flossflower · 14/09/2025 14:22

I have seen these photos and yes I think it is something you keep between your husband and yourself. Just like you wouldn’t show other people pictures of you in a bikini.
I have also seen pictures of semi naked mothers with naked babies. These are not to my taste. SM has a lot to answer for.

What does “open to her breakfast” mean? 😅
