Size v Weight

I am 168cm tall and 58. I have recently lost 15kg through diet and exercise and am now a size 12. All the BMI calculators, including the NHS one, tell me I have to lose another 10-11kg to get out of the overweight zone. I am not particularly muscular but I would say I am big boned and my boobs have not shrunk with the weight loss at all!

My DH tells me I am just fine and I should "ignore the fuckers".

But if you are a similar height and a 10 or 12, can I ask how much you weigh please?

Cloth sizes mean absolutely NOTHING though! I don’t know why anyone thinks it’s a thing anymore - and also they are SO much bigger now. I found an old dress from the 00s the other day in a size 12 - I haven’t bought anything bigger than an 8 in the last 10/15 years and this dress fits me fine. A size 12 now is an old 16 at least from when we were younger. And an old 16 would seem overweight.
harsh but true.

BobnLen · 14/09/2025 17:42

Clothes size often depends on your bone structure, I'm 178cm, 69kg and size 14, if my bones were narrower, I would be size 12, dieting would not make that much difference

CoolOtter · 14/09/2025 17:43

Many thanks for all the replies, really helpful! I am currently 81kg. I have a huge head and so am going to take some comfort from that fact; for the first time ever! If I am honest, I think my arms are still to blame for a significant part of the kgs still to go! When I don't hit a plateau, I can lose 2 kg in a week, so shifting it is not really an issue but impatience is! I am a bit worried about how I maintain my exercise in the winter when walking 5-10 km a day will be more difficult. Will have to alter my commute to find more stairs to climb! Gym isn't an option as I work long hours and have a 3 hour commute.

I totally lost faith in BMI as a tool when I read about the bloke who came up with it and how he did it.

It was invented in the 19th century by a Belgian mathematician. He measured lots of people to establish the ‘ideal’ weight range for the Belgian population.

Unfortunately, he forgot to include anyone non-white, not Belgian or, indeed, women. So you are essentially comparing yourself to 19th century white Belgian dudes who presumably, didn’t have wider hips, boobs or higher body fat. 😆

It can be a useful tool but it’s deeply flawed.

I am 177cm tall and weight 75kg. I am a size 8 - 10.

having just had a dexa scan I can honestly say I have dense bones 🤣

Wow! You do! I'm 178, 59kg and size 8-10!

Peteryourhorseisheree · 14/09/2025 17:51

I’m 5 foot 4.

At a size 8, (not just vanity sizing, waist measurement 24 inches), I still weighed just under 11 stone. No one believed me if I told them, I got on scales in front of a friend a couple of times when they insisted I must be lighter.

Im not muscular, ive never been off my arse in my life, let alone set foot in a gym.

ETA - just read the comment about dexa scans, I had one a few years ago when I was diagnosed with celiac. I was told my bones were dense!

Wednesdayonline · 14/09/2025 18:08

5ft 8. Around 70kg. Size 10-12. Waist 29 inches. Fairly muscular, broad shoulders and hips :) I'd go by waist to height ratio more than BMI. And also how you feel in yourself.

DiscoBob · 14/09/2025 18:27

When I was 168 tall and was a size 10/12 I weighed about 9.5 stone.

I've got big shoulders though. At my skinniest I can't go below a size 8. I also have osteoporosis now.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 14/09/2025 18:33

54years. 157cm 69.8kg. Size 10 sometimes size 8. Instructed by Gp to lose weight due to waist measurement.
Currently you can see my ribs, spine, collarbone and hip bones. But I’m giving it a try to lose another 5 -10kg.

Whichhandbag · 14/09/2025 17:51

Wow! You do! I'm 178, 59kg and size 8-10!

I am entirely made of muscle and bone at the moment - 21% fat and a size 29inch waist.

my TDEE is just over 2900 cals,
my BMR is 1700cals
so i feel pretty lucky that a diet for me doesn’t look like a diet other women have to go on.

TBF I have to gym 4-5 times a week to maintain it.

SpigTheFish · 14/09/2025 19:07

I'm 166 cm, slightly younger and weigh 60 kilos and wear an 8-10 bottom and a 10-12 top.

I'm also large framed (broad shoulders, long arms, big bust, size 8 hands and feet etc..) but I have thin legs, hips and waist.

i find that with a big frame, you have to be quite light to look slim, so even though my body fat is 20%, I'm still a size 10-12. It's shit.

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 14/09/2025 19:08

171cm and 63kg size 10-12, which is odd as I am a 12 at 70kg, so thought I would be a 10 by now. I also have a big frame but tiny shrunken boobs

arcticpandas · 14/09/2025 19:10

I'm 45, 170 cm, 57 kg. I'm a top 10 and bottom 12. It's annoying because I just ordered these beautiful jeans and chose size 10 by mistake. No way getting them over my hips. Dieting wouldn't change anything, I need a saw to slice some hipbone😅

NotTodayMarshall · 14/09/2025 19:13

Op I’m 165cm tall and weigh 55kg and am a size 6 so if you mean you are 58kg then it just goes to show the variation! I do a lot of exercise and have quite big 32f boobs and an hourglass type figure but I’m generally small framed, thin wrists etc.

Bambamhoohoo · 14/09/2025 19:13

Have you not been in the normal weight category since you reached adult height?

i don’t say that to be goady but I never quite get these posts with confusion about how you can be a normal BMi . I am 5’7 and there is about a 3 stone spectrum of weights that are normal bmi (bmi 21-25) for that height. I’ve been most of them, from 8 stone to 11 stone. It’s very hard to imagine me being 8 stone now, but realistically, I know it can happen and is very possible.

Thissickbeat · 14/09/2025 19:14

I'm 167cm and 53kg. Size 10.
All my weight is on my thighs, which I know is the healthiest way to be and I'm very lucky. It's just a nightmare for buying trousers.

Barrel legs are your friend.

edited as I googled

170cm and 65kg

i was thinking 80kg so good thing I checked 😂

bugalugs45 · 14/09/2025 19:43

I’m 165cm , 10 stone 12 , size 12-14 . My friend with exactly same measurements literally is wearing a 10 & looks considerably slimmer than me !

Gwenhwyfar · 14/09/2025 19:47

BMI isn't perfect for everyone, but it's a good guide. Better than asking randoms on the internet or your husband who may be either trying to please you or liking you at a bigger size.

Wow! I thought big bones was a myth. Are you sure you're not muscular? Big boobs?

Thaimonstera · 14/09/2025 19:55

I’m 5’6 and weigh 57kg approx (just under 9 stone) im 39.

I lost nearly 4.5 stone in the last year and went from a size 16 down to a 10. I would have thought I would have been a size 8 but I struggle to fit in most 10’s really. So I’d say I’m more an 11 (if that were a thing) and size medium

WordleAway · 14/09/2025 19:56

I’m 170 cms, size 10 and weight 58kg. Older than you though (71).

SoftPillow · 14/09/2025 19:57

I’m 172cm and late 30s

At 75kg I’m a 14
At 70kg I’m a 12
At 66kg I’m a 10
At 63kg I’m an 8
