Size v Weight

I am 168cm tall and 58. I have recently lost 15kg through diet and exercise and am now a size 12. All the BMI calculators, including the NHS one, tell me I have to lose another 10-11kg to get out of the overweight zone. I am not particularly muscular but I would say I am big boned and my boobs have not shrunk with the weight loss at all!

My DH tells me I am just fine and I should "ignore the fuckers".

But if you are a similar height and a 10 or 12, can I ask how much you weigh please?

I tend to wear size UK 10-12 on bottom. I'm about 171 cm tall and about 61 kg.

Actual size measurements, bust-waist-hips are (inches): 36-30-40

Addictforanex · 14/09/2025 20:04

My BMI is 20.2 and I am a size 10-12, small boobs though

yousillygoose · 14/09/2025 20:13

I am 42, 169cm and weigh around 52/53kg. I generally wear size 6/8.

5128gap · 14/09/2025 20:20

If you look good and feel healthy it's really easy to fall into the trap of thinking BMI is a load of rubbish. I used to think this, but was deluding myself really as I feel much better health wise at mid point healthy BMI, I just didn't know the difference before. I'm 56 though, so if you're young it may not make such a difference for you. Keeping your waist below 32" is important though.

itsallsohard · 14/09/2025 20:23

I'm 168 cm and pretty dot-on 57 kg and my clothes sizes are all over the place. Partly that varies on whether we're talking tops, trousers, skirts, or dresses, partly it's just different brands, but even within a given brand and style I find clothing sizes wildly differnt (e.g. today at M& S I bought a jumper that was pretty loose even at size 10 but two tees that were rather tight even at 14 🤷🏼‍♀️. I rarely go below a size 10 because I prefer clothes not too tight, but also, I have slim hips and a rather wide waist and a large bust but narrow shoulders ... Above all what I'd say is that this is the weight I tend to stay at when I just eat what I want and don't think about it, the weight I've basically been since reaching my adult height. Except for one decade on SSRIs when I put on nearly 13 kg (2 stone) and could not shift it, while every doctor infuriatingly just shrugged and said my BMI was still fine so it wasn't an issue. When I came off the meds my weight slipped back to (my) normal so fast that THEN the GP got worried -- I hadn't changed a thing about what I ate but lost, I repeat, 2 stone in two months. What I have concluded from this is that there is more to weight than just calories in, calories out, and also that it is just so hard to lose weight your healthiest bet really is to find a size where you feel like yourself and can stay reasonably stable without too much trouble. Stressing about it is arguably more unhealthy than a little extra weight!

Op I’m 165cm tall and weigh 55kg and am a size 6 so if you mean you are 58kg then it just goes to show the variation! I do a lot of exercise and have quite big 32f boobs and an hourglass type figure but I’m generally small framed, thin wrists etc.

Major variation. I'm 171cm tall and also 55kg. Size 6 bottom but 8-10 top as I've got broad shoulders. Only a 32D too. How heavy does a 32f feel on a size 6 frame? 😬

Slimagain · 14/09/2025 20:37

I’m 166cm and 60.5 kg size 8/10. I lost 30kg last year on MJ . I had a tummy tuck and lipo in January and lost another 8kg in baggy , sore skin and remaining viceral fat. I’m BMI 21.6 and it has changed my life. No more blood pressure, cholesterol medication or knee osteoarthritis injections . I can do sport and walk miles.
My frame is average.

I totally lost faith in BMI as a tool when I read about the bloke who came up with it and how he did it.

It was invented in the 19th century by a Belgian mathematician. He measured lots of people to establish the ‘ideal’ weight range for the Belgian population.

Unfortunately, he forgot to include anyone non-white, not Belgian or, indeed, women. So you are essentially comparing yourself to 19th century white Belgian dudes who presumably, didn’t have wider hips, boobs or higher body fat. 😆

It can be a useful tool but it’s deeply flawed.

I’m not saying it’s perfect but your realise it’s been updated since then? 😂

gardenershelp · 14/09/2025 21:44

I find the variation so confusing 😂 I’m the same height as you, weigh 70kg, but am a size 14. At 81kg I was a size 16. I guess it’s just how weight is spread across the body? I think currently I’m really a size 12 in my legs, but my tummy needs a 14

edited to add I’m mid 30s

StartingOverIn2025 · 14/09/2025 21:54

Well done on your weight loss!!

i’m 5’4, 13.5st and a size 14 in most shops. more of a 12 on top but generally get a 14 for extra space.

I lost a lot of weight over the last few years (nearly 14 stone) so I have lots of extra skin and also lipodema on my arms, legs and lower tummy.

Wow!!! Well done, that’s amazing!

Wow! I thought big bones was a myth. Are you sure you're not muscular? Big boobs?

Nope. I’m not muscular at all.

boobs are 34 d but they are all skin, like spaniels ears 🤣🤣🤣 so they are d worth of loose skin stuffed into a bra ( was overweight as a teen and had a lot of fat on my breasts, they are now empty and hang down to my waist so my cup size is deceptive, it’s all just empty skin there).

I’ve always been very heavy.

My son is the same. He was weighed by a dr at 6 years old, the dr weighed him 4 times and took him to another scale as it showed he was really heavy. He was. But you could see his ribs and spine.

Anonymous07200408 · 15/09/2025 07:50

I’m 170cm weigh 64.4kg and am a size 12

Wigtopia · 15/09/2025 07:54

159cm size 8 top 10 bottom half, but bmi I am overweight at 64.8-65kg.

bmi chats should be taken with a pinch of salt as it depends on the amount of muscle etc.

well done on the weightloss!

Theredjellybean · 15/09/2025 07:58

I'm 163 cm and 61 kgs and my BMI is 23.1
I wear 10 sometimes 8.
I have 32E boobs

PermanentTemporary · 15/09/2025 08:00

I’m 175cm, 85kg and a 16-18, bmi about 27. Clearly not in your situation as it’s very obvious still that I have a stone to lose. My waist is huge and always has been. At this age if I end up sitting around BMI 26 I won’t bust a gut to go lower tbh.

Newyeargymwanker · 14/09/2025 17:05

I am 177cm tall and weight 75kg. I am a size 8 - 10.

having just had a dexa scan I can honestly say I have dense bones 🤣

Wow! I am taller and lighter than you but a bigger size. Your bones must be made of concrete!

CeeJay81 · 15/09/2025 08:10

I'm 160cm. bmi 22.5, size 6-8 top, 10 bottom. I've got tiny boobs and look slimmer than I am cause all my weight is on my bum/thighs. It's healthier I guess but doesn't look attractive.

Wheresmyseakelp · 15/09/2025 08:29

I’m 165 cm, 74 kg, lost over 20kg, and will struggle to lose more and maintain. Currently focussing on eating well and strength which I feel I can do. When I checked my bmi it made me so disappointed when I thought I’d done well, seeing it tell me how much more I should lose. Can’t be bothered worrying about dress sizes, I tend to go for 16, but more mindful how I feel.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 15/09/2025 08:32

I am 5ft 3, lost 20 KG over the last year, I am now in a size 10 and weigh 64kg and still shows I am overweight on BMI chart.

I worked with a nurse that said BMI doesn't take into account muscle mass. If I lost another 7-8KG, I think I would be too small

Gagagardener · 15/09/2025 08:33

I've found this thread very interesting.

I am 76, 5ft 8in , 12st 12lbs (172cm, 180kg) and so BMI 27/8ish. I got down to a stone lighter a few years ago, but I've worn size16 for ever. (Some of my clothese are almost 20 years old.) I believe an advantage of carrying a bit of 'extra' weight for those who can stay active is maintenance of bone strength.

Walking, Pilates and gardening mean I can lift and carry fairly heavy things - sacks of compost, for instance, though not the concrete paving slabs I could manage in my 40s and 50s. And arthritis in my hands has weakened my grip.

Gagagardener · 15/09/2025 08:41

I'm 182 lbs, not kilos. I cdnt work it out quickly enough to edit. My metric weight is 81.2k, according to my scales.

Plan2025 · 15/09/2025 09:15

I find it so interesting and would love to know if there is any science in 'heavy' bones or whether it's all about how and where your body distributes fat.

I am 5ft8 so around 173cm and weigh 98kg and a size 16. I felt I was slim for my wedding and even then my BMI only just crept into the healthy bracket, still wore a size 14 or maybe a 12 on the top half at a push and felt I'd have looked out of balance losing anymore. I am under no illusion that I'm overweight but people do seem surprised when they didn't out how much I weigh.

I saw a few mention big heads - that's definitely me! (61cm)

Bananafofana · 15/09/2025 09:22

I’m your exact height and 66kg size 10. I’m still well padded and don’t look thin - I could lose another 10 kg and be a healthy weight (and not look scrawny either). I have lost 10kg to get here - I was a size 12 at 76 kg but looked overweight visually and by bmi.

I would go by weight and waist measurement for cardiac health (hip:waist ratio - have a google) not clothes size, especially uk clothes sizes. Very much “vanity sizing” if you try on the equivalent t size in an Italian brand for example!

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 15/09/2025 09:56

When I was 12 stone , I was overweight according to my bmi, but I didn't look overweight, I actually looked good. I was healthy and active (very active, in the gym every day, walking every day). Sadly I can't chop off my boobs and they never really shrink much when I lose weight and mother nature decided I was going to be blessed with large boobs (I was a c cup at 11, D by 12 and they carried on growing).

I'd look ill at 8st which is what my bmi says is a good weight for me at 5ft6.

When I was a 11 stone I looked good and fitted into size 12 occasionally 10 and that was the top of my healthy bmi.

But I always go back to this, the majority of the England Rugby team would be classed as obese or overweight according to bmi but they are anything but unhealthy.
