My son has gone on the march

1000 replies

funkadelic · 13/09/2025 10:59

Hi, have been on here years but only lurk, don’t post. But today is the day.
I am in bits. My 22yr old DS is in London on this march. I am shaking and utterly appalled. We differ on politics massively and have done for some time. I work in education, have travelled and am bit of a lefty hippy but to be honest it’s becoming more about values and morals. He is fully immersed in the manosphere algorithm and I’ve always thought he is exploring himself and things and have chats about why he has the opinions he does and try and understand his point of view. I try not to belittle him but try and get him to critically think about things.
But this I can’t deal with. I am so upset that my son has gone to this, and that it is something that is so far away from me and my values, something that I thought I had instilled in him as well.
I am totally aware that it’s triggered embarrassment but that is my issue and I’m not putting that on him. He is still my son and I love him and his passion and interest in the world, just in something I believe is so wrong and makes me sad.
Please talk some sense into me.

It's ok for him to have opinions, as long you agree with them. He's an adult. Leave him alone. Just because you don't agree with him it doesn't mean he is wrong

Locutus2000 · 13/09/2025 12:40

This is the rare thread where both my Left and Right bingo cards have worn out.

PiggyPigalle · 13/09/2025 12:40

You say you're so educated, travelled and liberal, but you just don't get it.
This isn't about hating on Abdul who runs the corner shop, or refusing treatment from a very talented doctor. It's scale.
It's the sudden influx of millions of people when our services are near breaking point. Most of whom will always depend on state top ups.
Have you given a thought to what happens when the war suddenly ends in Ukraine? Will those millions, many scarred from the war be looking for a home in Europe?
Do you know that there are literally millions in Africa wanting to come to Europe?
Have you ever tried pouring 2 pints of water into a 1 pint glass?

I recently travelled extensively outside the West and it was eye-opening, because it highlighted how much we sometimes exist in a bit of a bubble when it comes to political discourse.
Just one example is the time I shared a table with a young professional of Chinese heritage who had studied in the UK. He heard me speaking and English & struck up conversation.
I asked him if would ever like to come back to the UK to live.
Without hesitation he said no & stated his belief that the UK’s immigration policies are too lax, even physically pointing to himself “us, Chinese for example” and saying there should be more restrictions.
Conversations like this were fairly common, with people expressing views that, in the West, might be considered ‘controversial’, yet they were shared there without hesitation or fear of judgment.
I didn’t agree with all of them, but it was enlightening and refreshing.

Exactly. It's good to debate these things. The British tend to be jolly arrogant and convinced that their way of doing things is the one correct way. There is no one correct way of organising a nation and, frankly, it's clear anyone paying attention that the British way is failing in front of our eyes!

My father was in complete despair over my communism when I was in my early 20s lefty activist phase. I grew out of it. Your son will too.

You obviously know this is completely different. Not helpful.

Moobs or boobs?!

My picture doesn't seem to have uploaded, but definitely boobs! I don't think it's warm enough for moobs.

Leftists: Ukraine is for the Ukrainians! It’s a sovereign nation. Let’s hang flags in solidarity! They’re fighting for their identity and culture! Look at Zelenskyy in his fatigues…

Also leftists: Aren’t those British flags disgusting and intolerant? If people want to come here via small boats, let them. The UK is for everyone. Urgh, toxic masculinity…

Which foreign country has invaded the UK?

flyingsquirrelsagogo · 13/09/2025 12:42

those who are sticking to the “it’s about free speech” line, what exactly are you defining as free speech and why do we not have it?

bombastix · 13/09/2025 12:43

I don’t see the point of the posts telling the OP that she should be ashamed of her son. What is the point of that?

Young people are their own people and making their way in the world. Older people with entrenched views who are old enough to know better would do well to reflect.

We’re allowing them to, and people are shouted down if they take exception to it.

loulouljh · 13/09/2025 12:44

Good oh him. Its about our country, our values, our freedom of speech. Its not against immigration but illegal immigration. I would be proud. He is allowed to have a view.

do you think the million or so people at the march today are far right? Far right is trotted out all the time, to the extent it’s almost meaningless. It’s said to shut people
down. Of course the far right exists. Just as the far left exists.

But there has been a huge movement towards deliberate misinterpretation of facts. Charlie Kirk is a great example of this. Rewriting and reimagining and misquoting him, out of context.

I disagreed with many of his opinions but respected the way his devout Christian upbringing shaped him. And he always debated in a calm measured way. Since his death. the internet has spewed disgusting bile about him, taking clickbait quotes completely out of context to make cheap shots.

The first casualty of the culture war is the truth.

Edited

A million??? You still didn't answer Extreme far right does it Exist?
Perhaps I should mention I was on the fringe's of extreme far right ideology and I've met and mixed with these people.
I'm glad I saw it for what it was ..bitter and twisted bullshit.

rainingsnoring · 13/09/2025 12:45

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/09/2025 12:36

Yes, it is.

What I find scary is how divided the population are in general, how little different 'sides' listen to each other and how quick to jump to conclusions, how nasty people often are in their responses and also how trust in politicians and other 'leaders' is at all time lows. I think we will see a lot more chaos and violence over the next decade or two. I agree that this prospect is frightening.

“ ……

Given the support Reform and its thug offshoots have, that would be a perfectly reasonable assumption.

The same as far-left ideology then.

another example of militant left wing thinking. The absolute belief that their opinions are sacrosanct and received wisdom, against the far right “Nazis” who are evil bigots.

i had a very emotional response to OP’s post too and would agree with @CapriceDeDieux but I’d hardly describe myself as a militant left wing thinker.
Sorry OP, I completely understand why you’re so upset but sadly this thread is now even more upsetting.

Who is “our”?

pikkumyy77 · 13/09/2025 12:47

Of course its about “hating on Abdul in the corner market” —skin colour and presumed foreignness is used to single out and attack men and women who were born in the Empire, legitimately came here, or were born as British Citizens in your cities and towns. There is no where for them to return to. Yet they are attacked physically every day in the UK. The accusation that they are all rapists and out to hurt (white) women and children is the oldest xenophobic bloody shirt accusation of all time. Its what the Nazis said about the Hews and what white slave owners said about their slaves.

These marches are not innocent outpourings of uncomplicated and virtuous public sentiment. They are mass propaganda events.

Yanbu. I’d feel the same way and questioning what I did wrong as I brought up my children to care about and be respectful of all people, especially the disadvantaged, as I’m sure you did too.

"He’s not completely lost,". So if people don't have the same opinion as you they are lost are they?! Good on him for not holding back on his opnions just because his mother is lost. He's just not the lefty hippy sort of person that you are I guess.
