Teacher told my child that child is not a Muslim

Jkam24 · 10/09/2025 20:45

My daughter has recently started reception and asked me today if our family are Muslims, to which I said yes. She then started crying saying her teacher told her that she (my daughter) is not a Muslim. Is it unreasonable to be angry about this?

I don't know about Islam, but isn't the whole point of (Christian) baptism that you are welcoming the child to the church? So that baby is a Christian.

While I take the teacher's (assumed) point that 4 year olds are not sufficiently mature to have chosen their religion, it would be inaccurate to say that a baptised child is not a Christian. So why is it in any way accurate to say that a 4 year old Muslim child is not a Muslim?

And irrespective of all this.... why is the teacher not upset that her off the cuff remark sent a child home in tears? It does need reporting, but as a philosophical point rather than being associated with any implied racism.

Kohll · 11/09/2025 19:41

So you were really angry when you thought this could have been said and might somehow be prejudiced against just you, your child, or your beliefs (despite others reflecting that a denial like this would not actually even be effective at being aggressive or offensive in the way you insinuated).

Now that you say the teacher admits the statement in the context of her general views about children and religion (which others find inappropriate to share in the workplace and with young children themselves), despite apparently being a teacher yourself, you seem to accept it and don't want to do anything more about it?

Fortunately that is not how schools in this country operate.

UNFORTUNATELY

cumbriaisbest · 11/09/2025 19:49

While teacher is having this conversation about religion with a 4 year old, what are the the other 35 doing?

Maybe she's given herself time to think and calm down a bit which would be the sensible thing to do.

Thinking time is allowed, you know.

Why are you having a go at her?
What is your agenda?
Are you bitter about something and taking it out on OP?

I remember the days when women on mumsnet used to support each other.
Shame this doesn't happen much any more...

Asking because OP jumped to what I thought was a farfetched conclusion based on the info given. She began hinting at all sorts of things she felt were unjust and specific to her religion and couldn't believe all others didn't agree the teacher was probably just a horrid racist.

Now that something else seems to have come to light as being at play (if the teacher did in fact admit something, and we don't know that this isn't just her explanation, I accept) and it's not all about OP or her particular religion, she's suddenly not interested in putting it right.

I see Christianity is the top of your list.
I also know this is a COE country sooo.....

Whatever the figures this certainly isn't a 100% Christian country and people are able to choose their religion and bring their children up in that religion. Teacher had no right to say what she did.

If the teacher’s POV is that children don’t have a religion, it sounds as though she is more likely to be humanist/atheist.

Are you serious ?

the 2021 census showed Christianity was no longer the largest faith in the UK.

also you’ve seemed to have missed the fact that there are lot of British Muslims here - people born here.

just because they are Muslim does not make them any less British.

your point about putting your kids in a school in Turkey is ridiculous - British state schools are for everyone who lives here, that’s the entire point of a state school.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 11/09/2025 20:30

Not reading all the racist shit on this thread, OP, but would definitely be letting the teacher know that, whatever her intention, you dont appreciate her commenting on your childs religion and she needs to refrain.

Champagneandpringles24 · 11/09/2025 20:33

I got to church as and when I please, my religion or beliefs don't consume me or the people I am around.

Clown no....

Just because you disagree with my opinion doesn't make me wrong.....it also doesn't make you right.

Or maybe, rather than going in all guns blazing, OP could just have a calm unconfrontational conversation with the teacher. Because she’s going to feel a bit twatty if she finds out the whole conversation was taken out of context, or didn’t happen at all. Just a thought…..

This is not a Christian country. The King is head of the Church of England but he respects the integrity of all faiths and the right of everyone here to worship as they choose, or not to worship.

Schools, unless they are specifically faith schools, are supposed to be inclusive with regard to religion and, on the whole, they are.

The teacher was wrong to tell the little girl she was not a Muslim, regardless of how she feels about young children being categorised in the same faith as parents. That subject should have been left alone.

The op has been quite reasonable. She spoke to the teacher about it for clarification and got an explanation. She does not feel the teacher acted with malice but still thinks it was the wrong thing to say, as do most of us here.

Nothing else is going to happen unless this teacher does it again. Hopefully she will think before speaking in future, especially about matters which are really not her business.
