Wear or sell the Rolex?

Ex bought me a Rolex many years ago. I never really wore it as it was a bit tight. I went in my bedroom today and thought I’d been robbed as all my valuables were missing. Turned out my dtd had found the stash and decided to play with everything. I was thinking I should probably either wear it or maybe sell it. I’ve lost a bit of weight but still a tiny bit tight.

I don’t wear a lot of jewellery just diamond studs generally. Don’t normally wear yellow metals. I put it on and I do like it but is it just too much for an every day watch? I’m generally to be found barefaced wearing jeans and jumpers.

So YANBU that watch needs a glamorous owner rather than someone who looks like they are heading out on a dog walk.

YABU it’s nice, wear it.

Wear or sell the Rolex?

You can buy more links to make it larger and fit correctly

Sell it, what on earth would you want a Rolex for?

Why do you think no one would want a Rolex?

cupfinalchaos · 09/09/2025 21:14

I wear mine in London, just pull my sleeve over it.. never had a problem.

coxesorangepippin · 09/09/2025 21:24

Team sell

Actually the expensive splurges were part of the issue. I think he’d never been poor so would spend money without really contemplating how we’d pay bills. Which was fine when I was earning myself but then I had teenie preemie twins plus toddler. Having a posh watch is lovely but I’d rather not have been worrying about the bouncing DDs. I’m poorer now but I have the certainty that all my bills are covered. Everything’s planned for. I grew up poor so I think it’s just a really different mindset?

You see this is why i would never want to own an expensive watch, designer handbag, fancy car. Its what it represents. which, imo, is a flashy show of wealth and a deliberate outward sign of having more money than you need, or money to burn. I wouldn't accept a ridiculously expensive unneccesary gift and in your shoes I'd sell it and put the money towards something that I or my family would really benefit from. And tbh I'd rather give the money to charity than wear a pointless symbol of wealth around my wrist.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 09/09/2025 21:26

In terms of danger I’m not really worried about theft, so much, never in London. Rural idyll type place, theft is thankfully rare and tends to be expensive bits of farm kit, horses, fuel tanks.

The ladies ones don't fetch much money and you'd need the original box and papers to sell it on.

summitfever · 09/09/2025 21:32

I don’t like it at all, it’s not to my taste. But someone would no doubt love it so I’d sell it for sure and enjoy the cash.

Bananachimp · 09/09/2025 21:35

I think it's ugly and would sell it.

xanthomelana · 09/09/2025 21:47

If you wore that in my area you’d be perfectly safe because everyone would assume you’ve been to Tenerife or somewhere similar and had it from one of the looky looky men. We wouldn’t know a proper Rolex unless the paperwork slapped us across the face.

Back to the original question, maybe hang onto it for now and if you ever need the money then sell it?

Dangermouse999 · 09/09/2025 21:55

A couple of friends who are loaded, collect high end watches. They both agree Rolexes are generally naff and a sign of someone trying much too hard to impress people.

A Casio is much cooler.

I’d sell the Rolex in a heartbeat.

Not true. Maybe for a very rare model.

My husband bought one in Heathrow about 7 years ago. Know little about watches but he paid around £5k for it. Think he told me recently that it’s now worth around £14k. But you’re right, it could be a limited edition. Everywhere has waiting list for new Rolexes now (according to a friend of mine who is into watches) so by that alone I’m surprised that they’re not appreciating assets. Either way, OP, it’s probably not going to go down in value. I hope it’s insured as a named item on your insurance.

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 09/09/2025 22:26

I wouldn’t wear it like that - I’d get a Rolex dealer to fit an extension link. It should’ve come with a full set and then a dealer would remove some to fit you with the idea being that you keep spares in case you gain weight / sell / pass it down. The original buyer should’ve kept them but they are easy enough to obtain.

If you have no use for it or don’t like it or would rather have the money to buy something you prefer then just sell it. He’s an ex so it’s no big deal.

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 09/09/2025 22:29

@Tiredofwhataboutery , my watch; bought for me as a thirtieth birthday present is identical with diamonds but my face is deep blue. I have worn mine constantly for over thirty years and it has given me joy for all that time. I worry about it now much more than I used to and would not probably make the decision to invest that money in a watch now. I am rally wedded to my watch, I love it and would be sad to not have it.
You don’t sound at all emotionally attached to your watch so I’d definitely sell it.

TubeScreamer · 09/09/2025 22:47

I’d sell. I don’t think they’re very attractive and wouldn’t want the stress of worrying about being mugged,

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 09/09/2025 22:50

I think if you like it, wear it. If you don't, sell it (would be difficult to share between your kids otherwise)

SpottyAardvark · 09/09/2025 22:55

Sell it.

You obviously don’t particularly like it. If you did, you would have had an extra link put into the bracelet & started wearing it years ago. So passing it on & using the money to buy something you do want is the obvious thing to do.

I wear my Rolex every day, but it’s plain stainless steel with no diamonds so it attracts zero attention. If I had one like yours I wouldn’t wear it regularly either.

Discobooloo · 09/09/2025 22:55

Wear it! But get it insured.

It should only gain value and be worth more than what you suspect.

Davros · 09/09/2025 22:57

I sold a few watches in the last year. If you want to sell, I highly recommend Watchfinder

Weightedup · 09/09/2025 23:09

Insure it and wear it. I wear mine every day, it’s been abroad many times and in and out of London and loads of other cities and I’ve never had an issue. I think they are more likely to be stolen from your bedroom than off your wrist.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 09/09/2025 23:25

Wear it, second hand ladies' watches don't have great re-sale prices.

DramaAlpaca · 09/09/2025 23:29

It's much too flashy for me. I'd sell it.

TwoBagsOfCompost · 09/09/2025 23:35

100% sell it

butterfly0404 · 09/09/2025 23:47

It's lovely, increasing in value, desirable as it's the Datejust model. I think you'll be surprised at how much it's worth. I'd wear it and enjoy it knowing it's also an investment.

InterestedDad37 · 09/09/2025 23:52

I'll look after it for you! 😃⌚
