Wear or sell the Rolex?

Tiredofwhataboutery · 09/09/2025 18:56

Ex bought me a Rolex many years ago. I never really wore it as it was a bit tight. I went in my bedroom today and thought I’d been robbed as all my valuables were missing. Turned out my dtd had found the stash and decided to play with everything. I was thinking I should probably either wear it or maybe sell it. I’ve lost a bit of weight but still a tiny bit tight.

I don’t wear a lot of jewellery just diamond studs generally. Don’t normally wear yellow metals. I put it on and I do like it but is it just too much for an every day watch? I’m generally to be found barefaced wearing jeans and jumpers.

So YANBU that watch needs a glamorous owner rather than someone who looks like they are heading out on a dog walk.

YABU it’s nice, wear it.

Wear or sell the Rolex?

Sell and buy something else worthwhile! A holiday or new car or something

Chattanoogachoo · 09/09/2025 19:55

I wear a similar white faced one every day.Servicing is a pain as it's expensive but it comes back looking like a new watch with every little scratch removed.
I think you should get it serviced and wear it, they really do grow on you.
Mine is very rarely recognised as a Rolex, maybe two or three times ever.

HarryVanderspeigle · 09/09/2025 19:55

I would be too worried about someone trying to nick it to wear it. But then the only rolex I ever had was from a street market in Thailand.

Mummy7777 · 09/09/2025 19:56

I'd sell. Use the money for something useful.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 09/09/2025 19:57

What a ridiculous question ‘why on earth would you want a Rolex’ there are lots of very obvious reasons why SOME people
who are entitled to their own opinions may want to wear one. I don’t own a Rolex sadly but I do own a few quite expensive (to me) watches (ie Tag, Longines, Omega) and so if I was lucky enough to own that I would wear it every day and thoroughly enjoy wearing it. If I was choosing a Rolex that’s exactly what I would pick you lucky thing. But if you’re not like me it’s probably pointless keeping it. Sadly ladies’ Rolexes done seem to hold or increase their value like the men’s ones, although I don’t know much about them. So my answer is ‘wear it if it would bring you joy’, if it wouldn’t then sell it and spend the money on something that WILL bring you joy like a holiday, a new bicycle, a diamond necklace, fancy handbag, new bathroom.

NebulousWhistler · 09/09/2025 19:58

Keep it. It’s an asset. It’ll go up in value.

Alarae · 09/09/2025 19:58

Based on your post, it sounds like you feel like you should wear it because it was expensive and shouldn’t sit in a box, as opposed to just liking the watch if the cost didn’t matter? You even say you have another watch that is far more ‘you’.

In that case, sell it and buy something else you would enjoy. Could be another piece of jewellery, maybe a ring or necklace to go with your studs, so that way both of your twins will get something but you get to enjoy it in the meantime?

Fifiesta · 09/09/2025 19:58

Sell, sell, sell!

If you ask the question you have doubts …so sell.

Edited as I too didn’t notice that the giver isn’t a concern for you.

WooleyMunky · 09/09/2025 20:07

Keep it, they are a real appreciable asset as Rolex release on limited numbers.
Will be worth far more in a couple of years particularly if you have box and papers etc.

BurglarAndSwag · 09/09/2025 19:06

Very nice.
Bedroom, you say.
Where do you live?

😂😂😂

rockstarshoes · 09/09/2025 20:11

Team wear it!

decreasingbells · 09/09/2025 20:22

The clasp will likely be adjustable. Just takes a small tool which any high street jeweller should have on hand. Maybe worth checking yours is as big as it can be:

If you are thinking about selling in or do want to track down a link for the bracelet maybe worth heading to watchuseek.com and asking for advice on the Rolex sub-forum. It’s a friendly place. I wouldn’t take it to a specialist shop without knowing a little more.

Tbh I don’t have plans for the money I suspect I wouldn’t get loads, maybe 2-3k as I haven’t been keeping up with servicing. It sprang into action though and is keeping time fine. I did used to have a brietling which as really plain stainless steel band, white face which is probably more me.

I don’t know if it’d be better to pass it down to one of the twins, the only other jewellery (since their Dad originally bought it) I have of comparable value would be diamond studs. So they could each get something?

You don’t need to keep up with the servicing.
Have you got the extra links? If not take it in, preferably to where he bought it or a reputable dealer.
Do you have the box etc? Worth getting it serviced & valued.

bumbers1 · 09/09/2025 19:04

Wear it or keep it to pass down. They are only going up in value

Not true. Maybe for a very rare model.

19lottie82 · 09/09/2025 20:34

NebulousWhistler · 09/09/2025 19:58

Keep it. It’s an asset. It’ll go up in value.

Very doubtful. It’s not a rare or in demand model.

smallsilvercloud · 09/09/2025 19:10

Order a spare link and wear it, Rolex dealer will help you fit it. I would wear it but If you really don’t want it, it’s a waste, so sell and benefit from the money.

Yes, you can buy a spare link. If you like it wear it. I didn't used to wear my engagement ring everyday due to the cost of it. I only wore it if we went out. Now wear it everyday, it's insured.

Laura95167 · 09/09/2025 20:38

I like it, i think its subtle and smart You could get the strap adjusted if you needed.

But I think either wear it or sell it - but then spend the money on something thats a treat.

Ohmygodthepain · 09/09/2025 20:44

YANBU - you don't wear it, it doesn't fit, you didn't choose it, it doesn't match your style and possibly has negative connections for you.

Sell it and (even if you get a fraction of it's value) spend the money on something lovely that you will wear and enjoy every day.

Likewise for any old jewellery. No point it sitting in a drawer never seeing the light of day.

LadyRoughDiamond · 09/09/2025 20:50

Rolex’s are v desirable at the moment and, therefore, prone to theft. I suspect it’s worth more than you think and so I’d get it valued and then find out how much your premium would rise by if you added it to your home contents insurance. If the insurance is too much, sell it.

CasualDayHasGoneTooFar · 09/09/2025 20:50

If you like it, wear it.

If you don't like it sell it.

summerlovingvibes · 09/09/2025 20:50

I had an item that I inherited and absolutely hated.

I sold it and bought something I love.

I wear that every few days and whenever I do it makes me think fondly of the person who passed away. I would never have afforded the item I bought, and it's nice to have something that I love.

I could have kept original item but it would have just stayed in the box under the bed until I died and then be passed down to someone who cares even less for it.

At least this way I will enjoy passing down the item I bought and hopefully my children will know it from me wearing it.

Act you have reminded me the clasp is adjustable. I remember watching a video but never getting around to it. 🤦‍♀️I genuinely don’t know where the years have gone.

DoYouReally · 09/09/2025 20:56

Have it valued, then decide.

I suspect you might get more for it than you think.

Itiswhysofew · 09/09/2025 21:06

I wear mine everyday, but not when I visit London. It was a present from DP many years ago. He sold his as he didn't want the burden of wearing an expensive watch.

They're supposed to be worn snug, not tight, as it keeps the movement going, or something like that.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 09/09/2025 21:08

DontLikeMahoganyFurniture · 09/09/2025 19:30

Bloody hell OP why did you chuck him?! 🤣

Actually the expensive splurges were part of the issue. I think he’d never been poor so would spend money without really contemplating how we’d pay bills. Which was fine when I was earning myself but then I had teenie preemie twins plus toddler. Having a posh watch is lovely but I’d rather not have been worrying about the bouncing DDs. I’m poorer now but I have the certainty that all my bills are covered. Everything’s planned for. I grew up poor so I think it’s just a really different mindset?
