Wear or sell the Rolex?

Tiredofwhataboutery · 09/09/2025 18:56

Ex bought me a Rolex many years ago. I never really wore it as it was a bit tight. I went in my bedroom today and thought I’d been robbed as all my valuables were missing. Turned out my dtd had found the stash and decided to play with everything. I was thinking I should probably either wear it or maybe sell it. I’ve lost a bit of weight but still a tiny bit tight.

I don’t wear a lot of jewellery just diamond studs generally. Don’t normally wear yellow metals. I put it on and I do like it but is it just too much for an every day watch? I’m generally to be found barefaced wearing jeans and jumpers.

So YANBU that watch needs a glamorous owner rather than someone who looks like they are heading out on a dog walk.

YABU it’s nice, wear it.

If you have the spare links and don’t need the money wear it.
of it’s not your style or you don’t like the fact it’s from an ex sell it. Do you have the box and papers etc? You might be surprised how much you’d get.

Notabikerchick · 09/09/2025 19:13

You’ll get more than that. I’ve just been watch shopping and old Rolexes hold value well (not sure how newer ones will fare as so many made). There’s a wonderful shop in London’s Burlington Arcade that just does old Rolexes. Maybe (hunt for and then) have a look on there. 🙂

MaxJLHardy · 09/09/2025 19:13

Sell it. They’re a massive security risk worn in public

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 09/09/2025 19:14

OP, do check in the bottom of the box, there may be some spare links in there. if there’s none, might be worth seeing if any Rolex specialists can help source spare links.

I don’t think it’s too much for everyday, it looks very traditional and so stylish without being attention seeking item.

Pollqueen · 09/09/2025 19:15

I don't like it, face is too small. Sell

See I don't know.

I live in a very poor area of London and loads of people wear fake Rolex and fake designer gear/handbags.

I don't think I'd ever assume it was real unless the OP stepped out of a really expensive car or something.

Well OP has banged on about how it's tight, so apparently she doesn't have them.

I do not have them, it was bought second hand to be fair from a posh shop in Switzerland it t’was 8k and I have original receipt etc so bc sure it’s genuine. I did look at getting an extra link ( about £300) but nearest dealer is a good hour and a half away and busy, busy, blah de blah do left in box for a decade!

Absolutely wear it! I’d love one and per the name I’m a farmers wife & always walking the dogs! I’ll never own one though! If it will just sit in the draw sell it and enjoy the money?

jay55 · 09/09/2025 19:24

Sell it. Buy a watch you’d actually feel good wearing that doesn’t remind you of your ex and save the rest for a rainy day.

1apenny2apenny · 09/09/2025 19:26

Do you have the box and papers OP? Receipt is not enough. If not you’ll need to send it off to get it certified. Personally I would keep it and pass it down although if I needed the money desperately I may sell. They tend to hold their value.

Not bothered about the ex element. I just put it in to explain why I have a stupidly expensive watch that doesn’t fit or if it should be left to one of our daughters. I wear the diamond studs he bought me every day ( I chose them though).

I do have them original box and papers and a couple of service receipts.

Sell it it’s too masculine looking

DontLikeMahoganyFurniture · 09/09/2025 19:30

Bloody hell OP why did you chuck him?! 🤣

HeadingOutForJog · 09/09/2025 19:32

I have exactly the same watch and love it. I think you should have the extra link fitted and wear it.

user1471453601 · 09/09/2025 19:34

I wear mine every day. It's the most plain watch Rolex do. All steel and silver, you cannot see the crown unless you're really close to it, and no one ever does get that close. Only close friends and family realise it's a rolex.

but If you don't wear it, and you're not keen on it because it's tight, sell it.

But I love mine. It's quiet discreet and I like the style. And I've ensured my surviving family would be happy to wear it, after I'm dead.

Almostwelsh · 09/09/2025 19:35

I have a Rolex and I really don't look like a person who would have one. Usually casually dressed, no make up, not much jewellery. But I wear that Rolex every day. I don't see the point in having something if you don't wear it.

One day it might get broken, lost or stolen, but I've had 14 years worth of daily enjoyment from wearing it, so to me it's worth the risk.

ResusciAnnie · 09/09/2025 19:38

Mmm IMO it’s tacky/brash and tight, so it’s a sell from me!

Praying4Peace · 09/09/2025 19:39

Beautiful watch, wear and enjoy

Figgly · 09/09/2025 19:39

Do you have the box and paperwork? I’d get it valued if you don’t wear it. I have a watch that has doubled in value since it was purchased for me.

MostlyGhostly · 09/09/2025 19:41

I’d be scared of getting mugged wearing it, flog it and get something you really want

SwedishEdith · 09/09/2025 19:45

I'd sell it. You said you don't usually wear yellow metals so you'll never really like it.

Zigazigarrr · 09/09/2025 19:47

It would be about £14k new so if it’s good nick with papers it would be about £11k. Less good nick and not with box and papers about £6k. So it depends what’s worth more to you at the moment - the money or the fun of wearing it

Twattergy · 09/09/2025 19:49

I think wear it, its a design classic. I came into a man"s steel Cartier via family, got the bracelet adjusted and wear it most days. It cheers me up to see it even if I'm wearing jeans...its such a beautiful piece of design.

Goldfish93 · 09/09/2025 19:52

I feel like if you really liked it you would have already been wearing it. I'd think about selling it and buying something more to your taste.

Edited as I read your update that you weren't worried about it being a gift from your ex.
