To ask if anyone will admit to littering?

I am genuinely intrigued to see if anyone will admit to littering, on purpose. I was walking through the woods earlier and there was a starbucks cup and a few can discarded along my route. I am sure that occasionally people drop things by accident but undoubtedly some of it is intentional. I genuinely can't imagine chucking my rubbish on the floor so if anyone will admit to it, why do you do it?

If I know that things will rot away quickly and there's no bins nearby I do it.

Over the summer we had takeaway pizzas in the park and as there were no bins we left the boxes in some bushes. They're cardboard so they'll be gone by now or birds would use it for a house.

The birds absolutely wouldn't be using that for a house but if it helps you sleep at night 😂

I would definitely worry it would encourage other people to drop other less compostable things. Plus it looks awful.

But didn't you go there because it was nice? And now it is less nice for all the other people who go there after you until the alleged rotting away happens?

And how long do you think the rotting takes? 6months?

chipsandpeas · 08/09/2025 15:48

i have done, but i try not to

So, the answer to the question is yes you do litter cos you can’t be arsed to take your shit home and prefer to ruin the environment for others?

Pavingprincess · 08/09/2025 15:49

Surely this poster was being sarcastic???

lunaswand · 08/09/2025 15:49

No, absolutely not & it really really annoys me. MY limit is the occasional apple core in a bush but that would be it

Why have you?

ScrambledEggs12 · 08/09/2025 15:51

I dropped plenty of fag butts in the past (mostly as a teenager). I try and make up for it now by picking up litter I come across in the park.

Thank you for making the environment look scruffy.

That’s awful! It looks horrible for a start and just encourages other people to do the same. Have some pride in your environment!

Why do people go to beauty spots then deliberately unbeautify them for everyone else? It really takes monumental levels of self-absorption.

SerendipityJane · 08/09/2025 15:53

Whilst I generally oppose capital punishment, I really could make an exception for people who litter.

It's hard to describe the disregard it shows for where people - probably complete strangers - live. Where their children play. Where they do their best to muddle through on this planet. It's an offence against tens, maybe hundreds of people.

And there is never, ever an excuse for it. Never.

PMBiscut · 08/09/2025 15:53

Don’t do it. Actively litter pick in my local village and park, and will pick up rubbish that I find along walks etc.

I throw apple cores as well (plus grapes, raisins or berries). To feed the birds.

People like you are why so many places are litter strewn shitholes.

FitatFifty · 08/09/2025 15:54

The only time is if I drop something and it blows away and I can’t catch it (receipts mostly).
In my youth I used to Chuck Apple cores in bushes, I wouldn’t now.

ILoveWhales · 08/09/2025 15:54

Ive not done it deliberately. But once on a windy day the wrapper I was putting into a bin blew out of my hand as soon as i let go and flew away from me at speed.

I held it over the bin and let go.and it blew away.

I shrugged and thought i tried. Im not sprinting after it.

"trying not to" makes it sound like you could try really hard not to litter and somehow fail 😂

OP posts:
Icanttakethisanymore · 08/09/2025 15:57

Just to add - I wouldn't consider an apple core in the bushes littering. I wouldn't leave food on a patch of grass or a path but I would throw apple cores, banana skins etc. into undergrowth. (Hoping no-one is going to come along and tell me that's a heinous crime)

How vile you are!

Most of those cardboard products have some plastic in them. They can be widely recycled if disposed of properly.

There should be a special kind of punishment for people like you.

BlackAndWhiteShoes · 08/09/2025 16:10

Apple cores in a bush are probably ok but banana skins, as non indigenous fruits are different and they change the soil PH. So I would not litter banana skins.

I live in Birmingham and the litter in some parts (well before any strike) has to be seen to be believed. It is an absolutely filthy city. My lovely local park also gets spoilt by litter louts in the summer. I don’t understand people who think it’s ok.

Rightandwrong · 08/09/2025 16:12

I was taught as a very young child not to drop litter and it's something I've never done.

I generally pick up any litter that's dropped in my street.

And if I go down to the local beach for a walk I always try and pick up at least a few pieces of the litter from there.

It's just so sad going down on the beach after a good weather day and seeing all the detritus that is left. It's not just the drinks cans and the food wrappings and the remnants of barbecues. People just dump their beach towels and the children's buckets and spades bought for the day. Beggars belief to me that they consider these disposable items. More money than sense springs to mind.
No respect for the environment. No respect for wildlife. No respect for other people. Shocking.
