To ask if anyone will admit to littering?

I am genuinely intrigued to see if anyone will admit to littering, on purpose. I was walking through the woods earlier and there was a starbucks cup and a few can discarded along my route. I am sure that occasionally people drop things by accident but undoubtedly some of it is intentional. I genuinely can't imagine chucking my rubbish on the floor so if anyone will admit to it, why do you do it?

I will throw away an apple core into a bush or a verge but that’s it

PennywisePoundFoolish · 09/09/2025 12:41

Maybe a box in the hand is worth two in the bush?

About 25 years ago I was eating a satsuma on the Tube. The floor was littered with rubbish and I put the peel down to join it. I got a huge roasting from some sanctimonious git sitting opposite me, which I felt was a bit unfair considering the state of the carriage, but it had an effect and I have never done it (or dropped any other litter) since.

They were right though. Adding to litter already there is no excuse.

garlictwist · 09/09/2025 13:14

There’s so much litter where I live. I regularly see people just chuck it where they stand. I saw one guy wind down his car window, throw his macdonalds packaging in the road and just drive off. Hate it.

CaroleLandis · 09/09/2025 13:19

What bird is capable of making a house out of pizza boxes? 😂😂😂😬

What an absolute clown to think that!

That happens, when the place is messy, people will follow.

If I know that things will rot away quickly and there's no bins nearby I do it.

Over the summer we had takeaway pizzas in the park and as there were no bins we left the boxes in some bushes. They're cardboard so they'll be gone by now or birds would use it for a house.

Take your shit home, you skank.

AzureCats · 09/09/2025 13:27

The only things I have littered are apple cores into thick undergrowth. Never banana or orange peels because they last for YEARS especially in a cold environment like on a mountain.

I have brittle hair that breaks and I used to toss that when I was outside, but now I learned it can get tangled around birds legs I bin it. Same with pet fur, tangle and pesticide risk from flea treatment.

I go to places where people wild camp and I always see things like pasta, mushrooms, rice discarded as leftovers or rotten. Not even try hiding it in bushes. It's like God you were so close to being a respectful camper but now you've spoiled it for everyone and given us a bad name. Absolutely cannot abide anyone who leaves plastic litter, tents, fag butts, broken equipment, fires on the grass etc.

I do regular beach cleans and I see lots of people litter picking in the village after bin day. We live in a tidy area anyway. Absolutely makes me weep when I drive through England and see the state of the road verges there. It's such an eyesore and I worry about the impact to wildlife that try eating it or nesting with it.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 09/09/2025 13:28

I will admit to lobbing apple cores into the bushes. I put some time in at a community orchard and it’s amazing how quickly apples start to break down and are feasted upon by bugs. I know everything in a public bin goes to general waste so will avoid putting food in.

If you can carry the food out there, you can carry your rubbish home.

DonnaBanana · 09/09/2025 13:33

The only time I used to litter was back in the days when London got rid of all the bins allegedly due to the IRA bombings etc. If you can’t provide bins then I will leave my empty drinks bottle on a ledge at an underground station yes. In America they have bins everywhere in cities. I wouldn’t litter in the countryside though.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 09/09/2025 13:38

It sounds awful but wouldn’t it be nice if people who do litter could be banished to live together in filth and the rest of us can have clean parks, pavements and beaches.

jumpingthehighjump · 09/09/2025 13:38

I hate hate hate ppl who litter

Where we go, there's these big planters with a tree in the middle and this guy in front of us just lobbed a beer bottle into it

I started to call out at him but DH stopped me and he was probably right as the guy looked really rough and I think he would've punched us

No one is going to properly admit to littering on this thread

I asked someone if they were going to pick their litter up once and their response was I pay council tax so they can do it.

Not surprised by that but their attitude stinks. Who on earth do they think they are....they aren't the only tax payer on the earth. Do they think they're doing people a favour by giving them a job? That attitude is rife these days and not just regarding litter. It takes them a few seconds to bag up their litter and take it home, the council have to pay for vehicles, fuel, time, equipment etc etc etc

I have never consciously littered in my life and would (semi-seriously) welcome capital punishment for it. Absolutely vile antisocial behaviour.

I remember an episode of Mad Men where Don Draper and his family were having a picnic, and at the end of it they got up and shook their picnic blanket onto the ground leaving all their rubbish behind. I think it was meant to show how environmental concerns weren’t big in the 60s (or just how selfish they were) but clearly there are still people today who would do the same.

I remember that episode of Mad Men ... It was gob smacking. Though quite amusing when Don checked the children's hands were clean before they got in his car....the car had to be pristine 😂

Peachandpassionfruit · 09/09/2025 15:30

When my dog was a pup and I was trying to train him outside it was a nightmare thanks to people chucking food into bushes or undergrowth. I lost count of the amount of times I had to fish bits of fruit and peelings out of his mouth.
Just don’t do it. Find a bin!

EmpressaurusKitty · 09/09/2025 15:49

I work in Central London. I remember a colleague stomping in absolutely furious because he’d just been given an on-the-spot fine for chucking his cigarette end on the grass outside, like he did every time he went for a fag break.

I had to turn away so that he & the other smokers sympathising with him couldn’t see me smiling.

OMG. I didn't think anyone would actually admit to doing this. It's absolutely disgusting. Are you not ashamed of yourself?

Cardboard boxes don't rot away.

Dear god. I always wondered what sort of ignorant people behaved like this.

Semi seriously I think littering is a gateway crime. It indicates selfishness and a lack of respect for the people and area around you. I’m not saying all litterers will go on to be hardened criminals but I’d be willing to bet that your average criminals very first crime was littering.

AutumnalLight · 09/09/2025 16:24

A pizza box will take up to a year to break down.
That’s disgusting. Imagine if everyone did that!

I remember when the litter bins were removed in London.

Why do you think that gave you the right to leave your rubbish on ledges? You've used it. It's your rubbish. Take it home and dispose of it properly.

This entitled attitude that 'someone needs to provide bins for me otherwise I'm just going to dump my crap wherever I please', really pisses me off.

I have only knowing littered once. Driving down an American interstate with about 7 lanes then a divider and another 7 lanes on the other side. DS felt sick and the only thing I could hand him to catch it was a paper cup. He vomed into the cup (thankfully it was not too much vom) and gave it to me. I was then holding an open paper cup with vomit in it while driving. I couldn't put it down as it would tip over, and there wasn't an exit for another 10 miles. I pulled into the fast lane, opened the window and lobbed it into the concrete area between the two road sides. I still feel guilty 10 yrs later

Loub1987 · 09/09/2025 16:48

I have been guilty in the past of tossing apple cores into bushes in the park as I walk my kids home from school. I realise now this is bad and a really bad example to my kids so won’t in the future.
