To ask if anyone will admit to littering?

Icanttakethisanymore · 08/09/2025 15:36

I am genuinely intrigued to see if anyone will admit to littering, on purpose. I was walking through the woods earlier and there was a starbucks cup and a few can discarded along my route. I am sure that occasionally people drop things by accident but undoubtedly some of it is intentional. I genuinely can't imagine chucking my rubbish on the floor so if anyone will admit to it, why do you do it?

Whilst I generally oppose capital punishment, I really could make an exception for people who litter.

It's hard to describe the disregard it shows for where people - probably complete strangers - live. Where their children play. Where they do their best to muddle through on this planet. It's an offence against tens, maybe hundreds of people.

And there is never, ever an excuse for it. Never.

This x 1000.

Apple cores in a bush are probably ok but banana skins, as non indigenous fruits are different and they change the soil PH. So I would not litter banana skins.

I live in Birmingham and the litter in some parts (well before any strike) has to be seen to be believed. It is an absolutely filthy city. My lovely local park also gets spoilt by litter louts in the summer. I don’t understand people who think it’s ok.

Yeah bits of Brum are absolutely disgusting. It’s sad.

Chompingatthebeat · 08/09/2025 16:17

I hate fag butts, people seem to think its ok

How vile you are!

Most of those cardboard products have some plastic in them. They can be widely recycled if disposed of properly.

There should be a special kind of punishment for people like you.

Exactly. Why didnt they take the boxes with them and find a bin.

seratoninmoonbeams · 08/09/2025 16:18

Absolutely no way. I found out my ‘new at secondary school’ DS littered near where we live and made him go and pick it up. Don’t reckon he’s ever done it since. Walked the dog the other day and someone had done that trick of picking up their dog poo and carefully tying on to a branch on a bush. Like wtf. I’d rather see a dog poo on the floor than that. We live in a beautiful area near the sea and the moors and the litter people leave behind is outrageous.

If I know that things will rot away quickly and there's no bins nearby I do it.

Over the summer we had takeaway pizzas in the park and as there were no bins we left the boxes in some bushes. They're cardboard so they'll be gone by now or birds would use it for a house.

I am quite upset by this.

Gross. You should have taken that home.

That's really shitty behaviour.

People who litter are just lazy fuckers. That's all there is to it.

Chompingatthebeat · 08/09/2025 16:23

I always think its the kind of person who doesn't clear up their crap in fast food places, or fly tips on pavements

vapourtrail · 08/09/2025 16:24

I hate littering, but sorry OP I think banana skins are also bad. Visually it is litter as it takes ages to discompose and therefore gives people the excuse to throw more shit on the floor because the area is "already littered"

Willowkins · 08/09/2025 16:25

I'm pretty sure any kind of food waste will attract rats. And they can use the cardboard to line their nests. I know they're wildlife too but do the birds really get a look in?

Absolutely this.

I actually regularly go litter picking. I wish I didn't have to.

Megifer · 08/09/2025 16:27

Apparently me feeding the pigeons the last of my sandwich is littering according to an enforcement officer or whatever he was called, so yes I litter regularly and will continue to do so! ☺️

I've twice thrown an apple core out a car window.

Tweakie123 · 08/09/2025 16:28

I don't litter. I dated a guy when i was about 18/19. I remember we had fish and chips in the car. I was driving and when he finished eating he just threw the wrappings out of the window!! I was horrified. The police turned up at my house as well as someone must have reported the littering which was fair enough. Turns out he was also a smack head so the relationship didn't last long 🤣

CherryOakAsh · 08/09/2025 16:28

ZippyPeer · 08/09/2025 15:47

But didn't you go there because it was nice? And now it is less nice for all the other people who go there after you until the alleged rotting away happens?

And how long do you think the rotting takes? 6months?

I think six months is far too optimistic. I would guess it would take between one and five years for cardboard pizza boxes to fully degrade into the soil, depending on their location and the weather.

ThedaBara · 08/09/2025 16:28

We spent a week of the summer in a UK seaside town, throughout the day there would be tons of announcements about litter, lots of bins about, but the number of people who would take 20 mins carefully folding their beach tent, rinsing their sandals etc. and then just walk away from a pile of plastic bottles and take away containers was staggering. In the evening when most of the beach goers had left, a group of volunteers was combing the beach with bin bags, very day. Very sad.

But you managed to carry the boxes full of pizza to the park.

I am astonished at the excuses ppl make for their poor choices.

Take your rubbish with you please.

People go to beautiful places to have picnics and then leave rubbish-spoiling it for the next person.

Screamingabdabz · 08/09/2025 16:31

Birds would use it for a house…🤦🏻‍♀️

I’m a litter picker and cannot believe the shit people drop and where they drop it. Plastic bottles and old clothes in a forest stream. Why? Fly tipping makes me murderous… It’s mindless and just so selfish.

I would love there to be a change in the law to impose massive financial sanctions on people who litter and fly tip.

evilharpy · 08/09/2025 16:31

Absolutely never ever. It was drummed into me as a child in the 80s that if you can't find a bin, you bring your rubbish home. Even as a teenager in the 90s when we were drinking cans of beer in the park we still always tidied up after ourselves, it's not bloody difficult.

I reserve a very special kind of hatred for people who litter.

pigsDOfly · 08/09/2025 16:31

If I have rubbish it's mine and I either find a bin to put it in or take it home.

I was walking my dog a few years ago and came across the discarded remains of, what I assume, was someone's picnic. Among the rubbish were several small wooden skewers with small bits of meat adhering to them.

I spent a good few minutes picking them all up and wrapping them in some of the dog poo bags I had with me. There was no public bins available so I ended up taking them home and putting them in my bin.

Do people not realise, when they discard things like that, that if a bird or animal eats a bit of wood with pointed ends the poor thing will likely end up suffering a slow painful death, or do they just not care?

I'm guessing if you're happy to just throw your crap all over the place you don't tend to give a great deal of thought to the impact it might have on others.

To be fair I would never throw a banana skin anywhere where that anyone could see it (only into dense undergrowth). However, someone has pointed out they are not indigenous (unlike apple cores) so perhaps that's worse?
