To think England flags are intimidating?

Let me start by saying I LOVE MY COUNTRY!🥰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
I am an Army veteran. I fly a tonne of flags for St Georges Day, major sporting tournaments, Royal occasions because I love the monarchy!! I'm the only person on my street who bothers to get the flags and bunting out, although, there is one other house on the next road who does too👍
Woke up one morning to find England flags all the way down the street. They were well high up on the lamp posts. I couldn't reach them so I complained to the council. I feel like I'm living in an EDL rally. The council finally sent an email saying they had removed the flags but they hadn't. They were still there.
So I decided to fly two pride flags from the lamp posts opposite my house. Before the end of the day an angry GAMMON 😡 ripped them down with such vigour I thought he might have a heart attack.
It made me really sad because to me the pride flag is a symbol of acceptance and kindness to everyone LGTBQ+, disabilities and everyone who is neither white nor English!!🏳️‍🌈
So I have to look at their flags (and its not the flag, the reason they're flying them is because Nigel wants everyone to hate immigrants and they are happy to use the England flag as a dog whistle ) but I can't fly mine😡
Am I being too upset by this? I'm seriously thinking of using a water gun with food dye in it. We have a diverse community here💖 The other day a man said hello to me in mandarin with his little toddler on his shoulders and it was lovely🌈 I don't just want to cut my neighbours loose and keep quiet😔 they are lovely people who deserve respect.
This feels like a Trump/Farage takeover😡
This sudden display of patriotism (Flag shagging) from folks who don't normally bother is a worry😬

I actually agree with you OP. Not because the flag itself is offensive, but it's not our cultural norm to hang our country's flag up day to day (we are not Americans!!)

The cultural norm is to hang flags up only during big sporting events (e.g. England flags during big football tournaments) and for national royal events like coronations, royal weddings etc (more the union flag).

How ever much people may protest to the contrary, this deviation from the cultural norm is being driven by a nasty nationalistic, racist undercurrent. And I don't like it.

Even Americans don't tend to paint messy flags on roundabouts etc. They do really love their flag but are quite selective about where it goes.

Shittiest flag? Plenty of nations have a simple cross, or only two colour ways. Japan has a very simple, yet striking flag.

I wouldn’t bother. Even this will get people moaning.

Festivespirit85 · 07/09/2025 12:32

If you're intimidated by a flag you've got issues 🤣 it is literally just a flag.

i dont find it amusing - it reminds me of the national front

Theunamedcat · 07/09/2025 12:33

Plenty of black/brown British in my area painting flags everywhere ive no issues with them born and raised here like me we get along just fine they are far more patriotic than the white folks in some cases I absolutely hate the idea that its just a bunch of racist white folks doing this because its not

MyLimeGuide · 07/09/2025 12:35

Is this a wind up? Maybe go and get a hobby?

YABVU.

The Pride flag doesn’t represent me; it isn't kind or inclusive, unless you identify in their narrow coloured box.

The England flag is our national flag. Whatever the reason for somebody putting it up, if all us normal not fascist far right peeps admire and see it positively, then its positive. Gay used to be a derogatory term, until gay people decided that they would make it flamboyant and beautiful again. We can do that with our flag.

If it’s relevant, I'm from a refugee family, born in England and proud and grateful to be English and British.

Lots of posters being disingenuous here. Of course the St. George's flag can be intimidating. It's been co-opted and used by the extreme right for decades. Let's not pretend it's neutral. It shouldn't have been used in that way, but it has. You can't ignore the connotations.

Agree.

But the OP put his title asking if the England flag is intimidating!
What he should have asked is 'Do you find the people who are happily putting them up or displaying them out of their windows intimidating?' Because that's the OP's point.

How to spot a bigot who abuses people verbally for having different opinions to them.

And you don’t understand why people might be flying them? If I look out the window of this room, I can see a hospital where 30 children from Gaza are being treated for burns and other injuries sustained from bombing.

Isn't it a shame their government spent more time and money building themselves safe tunnels and buying weapons, than actually looking after their own citizens?

If Hamas laid down their arms and released the hostages tomorrow, the war would end. If Israel laid down their arms tomorrow, Israel would cease to exist.

First, I respect your service. To be fair to the OP though, she was talking about the St George's flag. Unless you fought at Agincourt, I presume you served under the Union flag. (I know the Navy has a version of it but it does have the union jack in the corner AFAIK)

I think also because they take videos of this vandalism to post on their social media. Somebody even spray painted it on a zebra crossing! Just awful.

I know, and have you SEEN those awful rainbow zebra crossings, which horses and assistance dogs cant work out? Awful.

Catpiece · 07/09/2025 13:06

Is it a coincidence that the flags have appeared since the riots at the hotels housing asylum seekers? Course not.

localnotail · 07/09/2025 13:08

I'm not even reading this. England flag is the flag of the country you are living in. Get over yourself and if you dont like it go live somewhere else.

I'm sooooo tired of this. I'm not right-wing but come on, Palestine flags ok (Hamas anyone?) ?? but not England??? Learn your history and be proud of your ancestry.

HRTQueen · 07/09/2025 13:09

Yes it is intimating to some people because it’s used by racists to be intimidating

I understand that you can and should be proud of your regiment's colours. I just doubt that most people who put up the St George flag do it to honour your former regiment. I mean, precisely because the flag comes with a lot of history, it should not be highjacked by the far right.

Last year we were viewing houses, looking to move.

Visited one in a nice residential area. Knew pretty quickly it wasn't the one. Inside was much darker and smaller than it had looked in the pictures, but had to continue playing along, nodding and smiling.
Went out into the back garden, and noticed that next door had a England flag flying on a flagpole in their garden. There wasn't any major international sports tournaments happening, so it was just... there.
I pointed it out the estate agent, that it could be off-putting as it suggests... "a certain type of person..."
The estate agent replied, "I hadn't given it a moments thought... but yeah..."

I didn't proceed with that house. It certainly wouldn't have been a deal-breaker, but I felt it was worth mentioning.

How very fortunate for their neighbours they never ended up with you living next door to them. Whew. Close call for them.

Resorting to personal attacks and name calling. I’m sure MN will take a dim view of that.
