Upset about new top

BykeP · 06/09/2025 13:57

I bought what I thought was a lovely new top, it’s black, fluffy and sleeveless. DH thinks I look like Betty Rubble from the Flintstones and keeps saying Yabba Dabba Do every time I enter the room.

I don’t think this is funny but he won’t stop laughing. I said he is offending me and I find his comments hurtful but he said it’s too funny to stop.

I refuse to change my top but I think he is unreasonable? I can’t listen to Yabba Dabba Do anymore or be called Betty

Because its funny😂

To be quite clear, my original post about my enormous clown trousers was meant to be funny!

It’s only funny if the person who is the recipient of the joke also finds it funny. Otherwise it starts to become pretty unpleasant.

if my kids were mocking somebody about their clothing and the other person was getting upset, I would tell them to stop it, however ‘funny’ it was. It’s called being a decent person.

The poster who posted about Coco the Clown trousers didn't mention being upset about the comment, nor did she express any distress within her post.

The comment about Coco the Clown, NOT Wilma/Betty/Barney was hilarious.

How, by me laughing in the privacy of my own home, and posting that a comment was hilarious, am I going to cause someone to be upset and/or where am I demonstrating that I'm laughing at someone being upset?

JNicholson · 06/09/2025 18:11

He’ll keep on saying it as long as you keep giving him a reaction. Just ignore him and wear what you want.

Thank you so much for coming back and clearing that up, much appreciated, honestly

alloutofcareunits · 06/09/2025 18:13

My DH once bought a tan coloured jumper, he also had some (only worn once) tan cord jeans. He (very stupidly) put them on together - he looked like a skinny Bungle from Rainbow, obviously I told him and we both fell about laughing, then he got changed 🤣

CalzoneOnLegs · 06/09/2025 18:14

@CatAsstrophe
we are exonerated CatAss as ‘Coco Trousers Poster ‘ has just confirmed it was intended to be funny.

diddl · 06/09/2025 18:14

What do people who do this (keep repeating a "put down" when asked not to) hope to achieve by it?

Thank you for posting this @thisoldcity

I'm glad you have a sense of humour 😃

I was crying with laughter at your post, which I read out to my DH. He thought it hilarious too and said that if he said that, it would have the opposite effect the comment had on you. I'd wear the trousers every week and call myself Coco!!

thisoldcity · 06/09/2025 18:15

CalzoneOnLegs · 06/09/2025 17:47

I don’t believe the poster said she was ‘upset’ or ‘hurt’ she said that she did not ‘feel the same’ about the Coco trousers after her husbands (funny) remark about Coco phoning in

@CatAsstrophe I think your username is funny too as it happens

@CalzoneOnLegsit made me laugh a lot at the time, it wasn't hurtful at all. I thought this was a light-hearted thread 😂😂

thisoldcity · 06/09/2025 18:18

@CatAsstropheone of the things that I love about my dh is that he still bothers to make me laugh by saying things like that! A shared slightly stupid sense of humour has got us through a lot 😂😂

Not2identifying · 06/09/2025 18:18

OP, you are in good company. Prince William once named one of his wife's dresses 'the banana dress' but she wore it several times and looked great doing it. If you like the top, that's all that matters.

CalzoneOnLegs · 06/09/2025 18:19

@thisoldcity it is 🤣 but ‘there’s always one’ as the saying goes

#Vindicated 😂

We're officially not psychos @CalzoneOnLegs

CatAss user name is due to my cat sticking her bum in my face - Every. Single. Day.

Do you really see a bit of piss-taking as a "put down"?

CalzoneOnLegs · 06/09/2025 18:22

@CatAsstrophe they do love to show you a close up of their Banana Slice, it’s a sign of love ❤️ - apparently

Toooldtopretend · 06/09/2025 18:23

I have a pleated leather look skirt and my OH rasps “Hey Batman” anytime I wear it. It’s funny.

Light heartedness and a sense of humour do not feature in the lives of some. Instead, they choose to take offence at the slightest thing.

It must be bloody hard work being so serious (and offended!!)

Would it still be funny if you asked him to stop because you were hurt by it and he didn’t?

that’s the difference

I have a couple of pairs of dungarees, when I wear them DH starts singing “Come on Eileen” or doing violin actions. I find it very funny and we both laugh, guess it’s different if it doesn’t amuse you though…

😂😂Love this.

My DH do silly mickey taking all the time. I bought some Pj's once that were too big for me. But me being me still wore them even though they were baggy. However, they sagged between my legs sometimes and when they did my DH used to sing 'You can't touch this' and do the MC Hammer dance. We both laugh at stuff like this all the time.

If I ever found myself genuinely hurt by a comment like that, I'd be taking a long hard look at myself, tbh.

I’d have thought more of a Roman Soldier 🤣 does Batman wear a skirt ? 🤣

Wasn't sure what wording to use.

I think it goes beyond a piss take when the person has been asked to stop though.

Especially when it's supposed to be someone who cares about you.

It doesn’t matter. The point is it did bother OP even if it wouldn’t bother you or I.

In any scenario we are all different with what we are happy with but if you specifically ask your partner to stop something because it hurts you and he doesn’t, the issue is far bigger.

My friend was shopping with her DH once, and the friend was very excited to show him a very expensive white puffa coat she’d had her eye on (potential Christmas gift) & he just said “snowman”. She ripped it off, and never went back to the shop!

Edited

Better before than after purchase. Sounds more East 17 to me though!

bumblebramble · 06/09/2025 18:31

Sympathy op. I’m also married to a man with zero sense of style.

Years ago when trench coats made a come back I thought I was channelling the Parisian Chic vibe until my dh told me I looked like Columbo.
