To think I don’t have a alcohol problem

So I do tend to drink everyday. Never to the point of not being able to walk, being sick etc. I don’t wake up and crave it, I just crave the feeling of being chilled out and being able to deal with stress better. DH thinks I am an alcoholic and has been going mad at me

Sorry I’ve only just had chance to come back on. I haven’t been purposefully dodging the question on how much I drink a day.

It depends really. On average I’d say 8 a day

If this is real, which I doubt, you have a serious problem. Eight units or eight drinks is a lot. You have alcohol dependency.

Some ppl drink everyday like a glass of wine to relax that’s not a problem

A glass, @London67 - not 8 glasses/units, like the OP does! Can you see the difference?

TTCJJB · 07/09/2025 13:21

Wow - I came back to this thread expecting her to say she has one small glass of wine Monday-Saturday. Certainly not 8 drinks per night!!

gotmyknickersinatwist · 07/09/2025 13:24

LillyPJ · 07/09/2025 09:00

It can be. One 250ml glass of 12% wine is 3 units. If you have that every day, it's 21 units a week, so above the recommended limit.

There's so much denial, defensiveness and justification in this thread

StealthMama · 07/09/2025 13:43

Yes you are an alcoholic OP. Speak to your GP. At the rate you are drinking you will likely be dead by 50. Just like my ex. Please don’t have children for as long as you are like this.

Yes I can I was replying to ppl saying about ppl drinking e ery day ...there is drinking everyday and there is drinking everyday ...hooe this helps have a nice day

Boingyboingy · 07/09/2025 14:06

Not sure why people are claiming this not to be real! Spirits make me vomit as does wine so I drink fruit cider. 8 cans on average everyday. I know I have a problem, I know it’s not good so thanks to everyone who has given actual advice. I have been suffering with diarrhea for the past few weeks so I wonder if it’s to do with my drinking. My eyes have been opened anyway and I plan on phoning the GP tomorrow

Even if you’re just having a slurp of wine, no one should take alcohol every single day. No one.

8 cans of fruit cider every day is horrifying @Boingyboingy.

Why did you start this thread? You claimed not to believe you had a problem. Now you say you do.

And you say you don’t get drunk on this eight daily cans of cider? Most people would be wasted after all that.

Are you very overweight from all the sugar and associated eating habits?

No wonder your partner is distressed. This is very serious situation.

Yeah ok that’s an awful lot. There is an average of 1.3 units per can, so you do 10.4 units a day, which is 73 a week, with a max limit of 14. More than 5 times the limit, every week. I think phoning your doctor and getting help is a good idea, that’s a huge amount to be drinking on the daily and if you’re starting fi become unwell it could be the reason, they can run some tests to see if you have liver cirrhosis, which does cause diarrhea.

Boingyboingy · 07/09/2025 14:11

@PigletSanders because today I guess I’m ready to admit it which I believe is the first step

PigletSanders · 07/09/2025 14:13

Say you’re drinking the small 330ml cans of Rekorderlig, Old Mout or Kopparberg cider, they’re 1.3 units each. Eight is 10.4 units. Each week you’re taking on 72.8 units of alcohol.

If it’s the big 440ml cans, they’re on average 1.8 units each. That’s 14.4 units a day. 100.8 units a week.

Really glad you are acknowledging it now. Your GP will likely want to refer you to a drug and alcohol service. It really helped my dad when his drinking started increasing as they gave him tablets to reduce the craving. I know you dont think that you have cravings but try and stop and you’ll see how hard you’ll find it. Push for talking therapy too as that medication is supposed to be used in conjunction with therapy, my dad reduced to 4 cans a day from 8 and declared himself cured but he’s not. Good luck

This is a joke….you came on here to question whether you have a drinking problem and it turns out uk ou are drinking 8 cans of cider a day….of course you have a problem, the diarrhoea is probably a symptom of liver issues

I'm glad you're starting to see the light, because this is a serious alcohol problem. You will need professional support to taper down - stopping cold turkey right now could be dangerous for you. Definitely talk to your GP; you should also look into other support such as AA or SMART Recovery (this is a non-religious psychology-based approach to adiction).

Tell your husband he was right all along and that you're going to do something about it.

Plastictreees · 07/09/2025 14:15

Well done OP, best of luck to you.

You know perfectly well why she started this thread. So does the OP. Good luck OP, take all the help you can get, go to AA, and be ruthlessly honest with yourself. Tell your husband to get in touch with Al-Anon.

I didn’t actually. I wasn’t sure if she was still very much in denial and looking for vindication, or if she knew it was a problem and wanted the cold reality of it.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 07/09/2025 14:18

You def do have a drink problem, sounds pretty severe tbh.

That’s a bit harsh, no one knew how much she drunk, she delayed admitting it, and she said the issue was her partner as he doesn’t drink, when she opened up. Yes it became clear she’s an alcoholic, but no one was to know that. Plenty of folks live with partners who take issue with the occasional glass if wine, I’ve seen folks on here being called an alkie for a bottle of wine a week, some people really take issue with any alcohol consumption. As it works out, yes she’s an alcoholic, possibly even with liver cirrhosis or other health problems now, but no one could have known.

Good luck OP. Don’t stop drinking before getting medical advice as you’re drinking a signifigant amount of alcohol and just stopping without medical advice can be dangerous.

Darker · 07/09/2025 14:36

Well done, @Boingyboingy .

The first step is understanding that there is a problem. (I hate the word ‘admitting’. Alcohol dependence is not a crime and shame has no place in recovery).

So bloody well done for posting, for reading what must have been stuff that’s hard to read, and for responding with your updates.
