To think I don’t have a alcohol problem

So I do tend to drink everyday. Never to the point of not being able to walk, being sick etc. I don’t wake up and crave it, I just crave the feeling of being chilled out and being able to deal with stress better. DH thinks I am an alcoholic and has been going mad at me

Well I drink wine every day with dinner. White wine. Have done for decades. Not saying its a good thing tho.

Midnights68 · 06/09/2025 20:22

If this is real - then yes, you absolutely are, and you clearly have the genetic propensity to it.

I hope you get the help you need.

I was thinking this. If you fell pregnant, would you have any issue stopping cold turkey? Would you miss it?

Getting pregnant made me realise I didn’t drink because I craved it, or because I needed it to relax, it was habit and the ritual of it. I didn’t drink more than 2 glasses a night at home but it had become part of my nightly routine. My DH works shifts and evenings could sometimes drag a bit so running a hot bath or finding something interesting to watch with a glass of red made it feel like I’d had a nice evening if that makes sense?!

I had no problem stopping immediately when I fell pregnant and didn’t miss it at all - I treated myself to things like fancy teas, 0% drinks etc & I’ve continued that for a couple of years now. DH and I will sometimes have a glass of wine with dinner the nights he is home as we don’t get a proper weekend and I have a glass of red wine or a G&T on a Saturday eve - it’s still mostly the habit of having a “treat” on a Saturday!!

MotherPuppr · 07/09/2025 00:38

Oh OP eight is far too much, you know this. I think drinking daily (maybe with the exception of those folks who genuinely do just have a very small drop of wine with a meal) is an issue. I could never do that, it would end up a 250ml pour nightly, I do enjoy wine. So I only drink at the weekend, or on holiday.

I think you should speak to your GP before trying to dramatically cut back as you might become quite unwell if you attempt to just “stop”.

can you maybe try one drink less tonight, two drinks less tomorrow, etc until you can see your doctor? If you can’t get an appointment this week I would consider going privately if you can, the sooner you start the better.

im rooting for you.

Pinkissmart · 07/09/2025 00:44

What happens if you DON'T drink? Do you even know the answer to that question?

Sounds like he might be right

If you think you’re not dependent, prove it by giving up for a month.

Duechristmas · 07/09/2025 06:44

What happens and how do you feel when you stop for a week?
Functioning alcoholics don't realize and will justify and normalize.
Please take a break for your health, it WILL catch up with you.

Duechristmas · 07/09/2025 06:49

At that amount of drinking it could be dangerous to go cold turkey, try to cut back and talk to your GP ASAP

Thepeopleversuswork · 07/09/2025 07:09

Eight a day, whether it’s glasses or units, almost certainly means you have some physical dependence. I thought you probably meant three or four.

This is way into problem territory. You do need support to manage drinking at this level. Talk to your GP.

Letsbe · 07/09/2025 07:14

You are certainly at increased risk of liver certain cancers and significantly shortening your life. I guess that's what he is trying to say.

Tontostitis · 07/09/2025 07:15

Have you read any of this? The OP drinks about 8 glasses a day.

rickyrickygrimes · 07/09/2025 08:27

@Boingyboingy

you have history of alcoholism in your family
your DH is expressing concern
you are admitting to an average of 8 drinks a day (and I suspect that’s on the low side of truth, if it’s an ‘average’)
you are coming across as cagey and evasive

as I said up thread I drink most days, but it’s a couple of glasses while cooking / with dinner. Haven’t drunk spirits for months. I consider myself to be a heavier, or at last more frequent drinker than most people I know - so for me you are clearly drinking way to much.

Do you want cut down or stop?

I hope OP takes the NHS advice rather than yours.
Even if it’s a small glass a day so comes within the unit guidelines, it is clear that we should have at least 2 alcohol free days a week.
In addition, not many people pour a small glass at home. 1 large glass a day quickly exceeds the unit guidelines.
I’m no goody two-shoes when it comes to alcohol but I do understand the guidance . We really shouldn’t be telling people who clearly have a problem that what they are doing is ok.

For all those lauding the European habit of drinking wine with meals or not being pissed in the streets have a look at the table above........

The French etc may not be alcoholics in Public but they're doing it behind closed doors obviously as their alcohol related deaths per 100,000 are way higher than the UK!!!

It can be. One 250ml glass of 12% wine is 3 units. If you have that every day, it's 21 units a week, so above the recommended limit.

Boingyboingy · 06/09/2025 19:00

Sorry I’ve only just had chance to come back on. I haven’t been purposefully dodging the question on how much I drink a day.

It depends really. On average I’d say 8 a day

8 what,,units, glasses,,?

If you don't drink on Sundays you are drinking at least 48 units of alcohol a week.

Yes, you have a drink problem. Please see your GP.

8 glasses a day, 6 days a week yes that’s a problem and will be impacting your health
