of course to use it again and again would make a child abit
but to class it as a swear word seems.......well stupid
IMO there are a lot worse words out there. and I find the whole "stupid" thing weird.
and ds how many more words are going to become taboo.

I have reviewed my post Custy and I am pleased to report that although I did say he was "utterly revolting. I really am sorry that you exist and share the same airspace and that someone went to all the trouble of bringing you up" I did NOT call him stupid. Then I did get a bit irritated.

SofiaAmes · 03/06/2008 04:23

But what's the point of calling them stupid or whatever other name you called them? Did it make them rethink their view? Did it actually make you feel better? Did it help the people in the third world?
It just seems to me that there has to be a more productive way of communicating with people (even the ones you don't like or disagree with) than insulting them and/or calling them names.

Flamesparrow · 03/06/2008 07:15

As I said on the other thread - when you have seen a grown man crying because you call him stupid in an argument, you realise how much damage it can do.

2shoes · 03/06/2008 08:59

why do people keep un saying I was upset becaues sopie called be stupid ffs??
I was angry because she had nothing better to do than pick up on my typo(and insult my ds's) not because of the word stupid.
I do think people should read a thread before jumping to conclusions.
I di explain that I asked the question because my ds is 16 and back then it wasn't a big thing.
if someone insults my dc's on here then yes I will be rude.

awaits sofia's red pen

flamesparrow. that is the kind of explanation that tells me why it is not a nice word.

i don't think its a big thing.

its certainly not up their with fuck and cunt - i mean these words have a sliding scale don't they

on that scale i think stupid comes pretty close to the bottom

i certainly dont have a roblem with calling people stupid becuase they did or said something errrrrrrrrr stupid

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 03/06/2008 12:21

There are words my DDs aren't allowed to say. These include stupid, liar and hate.

Because these words are usually spat out and I really don't like to hear children being vitriolic. Of course, there are far worse words, but they are generally frowned upon whereas there are many things people say without thinking that sound just nasty.

OrmIrian · 03/06/2008 12:26

No it's not a swear word. It's worse.

If I say 'fuck' I might offend some easily offended people but that's up to them. If I call someone stupid I am clearly being offensive and unkind.

zog · 03/06/2008 12:27

Don't like stupid. Also don't like idiot. Think the effect of calling someone stupid has been effectively demonstrated on this thread.

Pinions · 03/06/2008 12:59

Depends on how it's used.

It's stupid - ok.

You're stupid - NEVER.
