of course to use it again and again would make a child abit
but to class it as a swear word seems.......well stupid
IMO there are a lot worse words out there. and I find the whole "stupid" thing weird.
and ds how many more words are going to become taboo.

as i have said it wasn't being called stupid.
it was someone picking my spelling apart and then making comments about my children.
the word stupid did not offend me.
how many times do I have to say that??
i find it very irritating when people pick on another persons spelling to make a point. and think it is childish.
I have to post quickly when dd is in the room.
but then we can't all be perfect.
I think some one calling your son stupid is horrid.

bluenosesaint i agree

its awful

not used in our house

southeastastra · 01/06/2008 21:50

i don't think people worry too much about using the word, i quite like stoopid

MsDemeanor · 01/06/2008 21:51

I do appreciate what you are saying, but SofiaAmes did say she would never call anyone stupid in real life and that she doesn't care about misspelled words. She just used it as example of a case when calling someone stupid would be hurtful, which it clearly was. You aren't stupid just because you made a spellng mistake, and the fact that you found it so upsetting shows how bad it is to call someone stupid, surely?
The comment about not associating with you or your family came after you did rather let fly at her because you were hurt. It just goes to show the power of insults, which are much, much worse and more hurtful than swear words, and, I think, a really good argument for never using insulting words. They are so hurtful, and the effects linger. If someone shouted at me to fuck off, I wouldn't care. If they shouted that I was ugly, fat and a useless mother, I'd be devastated, frankly.

chunkychips · 01/06/2008 21:53

don't call ds stupid, but I have said he's done something stupid. Have called ds silly though, is that as bad?

MsDemeanor · 01/06/2008 21:54

I think silly and daft are not the same as stupid.

2shoes · 01/06/2008 21:55

we have had all kids of insults used against dd, spaz, retard and many more. which is most likely why i didn't think about the word stupid.
when ds was little there was no internet so I wouldn't have been aware of the fact that people didn't like the word. cos tbh who calls someone else's kid stupid?
I do hate people correcting other peoples spelling on here. it is rude. end of.
glad you think it was ok.

oh and I am not upset at someone elses lack of good sense. why would I be?

Actually I picked up someone's spelling on the 'I think people who drive are stupid' thread. Because I thought it was a bit rich calling other people stupid when you were in a glass house yourself. I don't think it's the worst crime. I think calling people stupid is worse. I honestly think she was only picking on your spelling to make a point, not because she was really bothered by it or thought you were stupid. It was to say, 'look, it's not nice to pick on people like this' - so kind of the opposite of what you thought. That's how I read it.
the word stupid can be really contemptuous and hurtful. I have said things to my kids I regret, so I'm not perfect either. Not at all.

2shoes · 01/06/2008 22:04

i called her stupedafter she was rude to me not before.
never mind I give up.
I can't be arsed to keep argueing over a rude person.
I have more important thigs to do........like post on the song title game.

Actually 2shoes, i'm kind of with Msdemeanor on this one. I don't think that sofia was picking apart your spelling per se, i think that she was trying to illustrate a point on how saying that someone is 'stupid' can be really hurtful. And it was. It really hurt your feelings.

I don't think she cares whether or not you mis-spelled a word. She was trying to get you to understand that calling someone 'stupid' does indeed warrant people getting 'het up' because its so hurtful.

This is how i read it anyway ...

It's how I read it too. But then she said she wouldn't want to associated with 2shoes's children. Which was pretty rude.
