This is what I worry about - a lot of these seem high to me but I live alone and everywhere seems to say being on a meter is cheaper for single occupancy homes. Is that anyone here's experience?

It’s cheaper for me (£23 a month). Apparently it’ll almost always be cheaper if you have more bedrooms than people (always unless you have some reason for extra water use).

pinkstripeycat · 04/09/2025 17:45

4 bed house, 3 bathrooms, 4 adults, big garden (love my plants) £72/ month

Ilovechees3 · 04/09/2025 17:45

2 adults in 3 bed semi £17 per month on a meter.
We have 2 water butts for the garden, we don’t use the bath as prefer showers.

Gosh this thread is an eye opener for me. I live in Scotland and the water is included in the council tax.

My dad lives in a local authority house and his water rates are included in his monthly rent. This is in Hertfordshire.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/09/2025 17:48

Just had our 6 month bill- up £100 this year- fuming!
family of 4= £470 so c. £78 a month

Yamyamabroad · 04/09/2025 17:50

£44 per month for a 4 bed with 3 adults in it. I'm pleasantly surprised that mine is so low having seen some of these posts as my letter always says we use 47% more water than other houses of this size 🤣

knittings · 04/09/2025 17:51

As of right now its £5.50.
I do the bill me up to date.

BettysRoasties · 04/09/2025 17:54

£46 family of 5. Anglian water. Pool and orchard.

CalzoneOnLegs · 04/09/2025 17:54

£47 per month, just me, Wessex Water, (was £26 two years ago)

CheltenhamLady · 04/09/2025 17:54

Mine has gone up from £29 to £43 over the last couple of months, so if it went back down again I'd think about it!

goingtotown · 04/09/2025 18:05

2 adults was £35 now £58 Thames Water meter.

Verywindyday · 04/09/2025 18:07

We were on the old rates system. This year the DD went up to over £100 pm for 2 of us in a 3 bed house. We switched to meter and were given an estimated DD figure of £50 pm. I have done monthly meter readings and we are currently down at around £35 pm without changing anything we do.
We both shower daily, washing done 3/4 per week. Wash up by hand as no room for dish washer. Never water the garden and rarely wash the cars…

OhNoNotSusan · 04/09/2025 18:07

£82
they wanted £89 - it is incoming as well as outgoing water

MrsHGWells · 04/09/2025 18:10

approx £80 mth dd, 3 adults x 1teen. Garden and careful with water use. Suspect actual usage is closer to £55/ mth. Metered water past 5 yrs and cheaper than flat rate, unless you have an Olympic sized swimming pool in your yard.

JustPinkFinch · 04/09/2025 18:11

My water company's bills are unfathomable and I have not lived here long, so not sure yet, but higher than I used to pay in my last house unmetered.

They have threatened that if I don't let them in to read the meter, they will revert me to a standard unmetered tariff. So I will never let them in! Crack on pls guys 🙏

That's been the advice now for years since water meters first came along I believe but even if it works out more expensive you can switch back within a certain time ( you'll find the details via Google) so no reason not to change unless its physically impossible for your property

OhNoNotSusan · 04/09/2025 18:16

the bill seems to be related to april to sept 2024 which is odd.

CantThinkOfAnotherUsernane · 04/09/2025 18:18

£69 a month. That’s for 4 adults and a child. Daily showers, laundry etc

I think I worried that once they can make up a set figure by looking at usage it would gradually creep up. I was happy with the flat level but probably am now paying a lot more than I would be on a meter.
I'd better not start washing my car all of a sudden if I switch! Shame.

XenoBitch · 04/09/2025 18:18

£99 for 6 months (so about £16pm). Just me in a 3 bed. Thames Water.

OhNoNotSusan · 04/09/2025 18:19

we have an increase due to them polluting the sea with sewage

PinkiOcelot · 04/09/2025 18:21

Was always about £66 per month no meter. Got meter installed and it’s around £32-£35 per month now. Wish I’d got one years ago.

3 adults in a house.

InOverMyHead84 · 04/09/2025 18:21

We are at about 120 pounds a month.

3 Adults and 2 Children.

That's really helpful, thank you very much.
I am disputing a bill but their offices are currently closed. At 4.45 on a normal working Thursday 🤷‍♀️

Knowing what random strangers pay won't help with your dispute, do you think your volume used or your rate is too high or even both?

Have you taken daily readings to see what the meter is saying you've used and compared it to your previous bills? Do you think you maybe have a leak?
