Not really an AIBU but curious about this and don’t have a large pool to draw from!

What random skills do you wish you had or would like to learn? I’m not talking anything serious or practical in day to day life but just things you think are really cool and would love to be able to do?

For example, I’ve always wanted to be able to make fire using a bow drill (a notoriously difficult thing) and be really good at archery. I also find blacksmithing really interesting and would love to be able to forge my own knife. I am currently good at none of these but would love to learn even though it wouldn’t really benefit me except in very specific circumstances. Anyone else have a skill they’d love to learn?

Speak lots of languages, I am currently in Egypt and yesterday went in a trip and met five holiday makers who could all speak four languages. All different combinations and was just thinking how?

mumofoneAloneandwell · 03/09/2025 21:02

Be able to learn to play chess - i dont have the energy to try

SpiltLatte · 03/09/2025 21:05

I’d love to be able to play piano. Wish I’d never given it up as a child

squashedalmondcroissant · 03/09/2025 21:06

Ooh good one @MyElatedUmberFinch!
I’ve always wanted to be good at speaking another language but I realise that’s not where my strengths are!

@mumofoneAloneandwellI’ve always been terrible at chess 😂 I also don’t have the patience to try!

Diving is another one which is annoying because I’m a really good swimmer.

Also I can’t hula hoop or blow bubbles with bubble gum so I’m picking those as well.

squashedalmondcroissant · 03/09/2025 21:10

@SpiltLatteSecond that for sure, I played as a teenager and got quite far but I didn’t like having to practise in order to get really good! It is a beautiful instrument though 😊

Unicycling, surfing and skateboarding all look really fun. In real life I'm totally cack hand and footed.

Dogaredabomb · 03/09/2025 21:13

Ooo ballroom dancing really well, I tried to learn but struggle with left and right 😂

NuovaPilbeam · 03/09/2025 21:14

Diy/construction type skills.

Tradies charge vast amounts where I live, there aren't enough of them and they are in demand. I know a few people who've upskilled to do things like install fences, build low brick wall in the garden, bathroom repairs, fit carpets, repaint properly. I'd like to have the confidence to have a go at learning these things. My brother in law has and said a lot of isn't that hard to do, doesn't require an unusual level of skill, if you are willing to put time in (obviously a tradie will often simply do it much faster). My brother in law has laid patios, built fully fitted cupboards etc in his spare time and they've look great & stood the test of time.

I always wanted to be able to do back flips - would love to do them down the high street when good things happened (ok maybe not at my age but dreamt of it when younger)
I would love to be able to play the piano really well
Ditto guitar, although I would become a guitar wanker at parties without doubt

TheKeatingFive · 03/09/2025 21:14

I'd like to be able to adjust clothes. Nothing major, but tweaks to hems and overall fit.

squashedalmondcroissant · 03/09/2025 21:15

@DogaredabombI tried skateboarding once and was so immediately terrified I never tried again. Props to those who manage to figure it out 😂 Unicycling just doesn’t even make sense in my brain!

Yes, this too. Although I do think so many things are hard for women to physically hold it is harder for us to do than men on a purely physical level - I seem to remember Perez's book saying bricks are made to fit the male hand, for example and I often find holding things up for long periods/steadying the drill/lifting buckets full of a set amount of whatever is the issue more than the technical side. I do think men find these things easier which is so frustrating to me.

pambeesleyhalpert · 03/09/2025 21:19

I’d love to be able to speak another language and shuffle a deck of cards really well

wand3rer · 03/09/2025 21:21

Parkour!

Notashamed13 · 03/09/2025 21:22

Definitely to be quick witted.

Timeforatincture · 03/09/2025 21:23

I'd love to be able to whistle through my fingers. Really loud.

Tbh I’ve always dreamed of being a dancer (specifically ballet) but unfortunately I am short, chubby and very ungraceful which does not a good ballerina make! I do, however possess the correct anatomy for twerking 😉😂

Another vote for unicycling! I used to skateboard and can still vaguely wobble along, but haven't mustered the courage to try a unicycle. I love cycling generally and would love to try proper downhilling, but I don't have the guts.

Also, pottery. I have visions of having my own big shed with a pottery wheel and a kiln, but given I've not even tried to throw a pot I'd best actually do something practical like a class first (maybe one day when I have more than 30 seconds of free time).

ValleyClouds · 03/09/2025 21:26

I’m slightly speech impaired which also means I can’t sing in tune. I’d love to be able to sing.

cobrakaieaglefang · 03/09/2025 21:28

Id love to play musical instruments..in my head I'd love to play guitar 🎸 at the very least..keyboards and drums not far behind.
The likelihood of any is remote.

cobrakaieaglefang · 03/09/2025 21:29

Oh and surfing..🏄‍♀️

Threelionsandalioness · 03/09/2025 21:30

Skateboarding and oil painting

BurntBroccoli · 03/09/2025 21:30

I wish I could play a musical instrument. I’ve tried many times but give up !

Aldo wish I could speak a second language fluently - something like Chinese or Japanese.
