Not really an AIBU but curious about this and don’t have a large pool to draw from!

What random skills do you wish you had or would like to learn? I’m not talking anything serious or practical in day to day life but just things you think are really cool and would love to be able to do?

For example, I’ve always wanted to be able to make fire using a bow drill (a notoriously difficult thing) and be really good at archery. I also find blacksmithing really interesting and would love to be able to forge my own knife. I am currently good at none of these but would love to learn even though it wouldn’t really benefit me except in very specific circumstances. Anyone else have a skill they’d love to learn?

I do have a really amazing skill though, parking! I'm truly brilliant, I can do it in a couple of moves in the tiniest of spots. To the point that people have said how on earth did you manage that?!

Which is incredibly strange since I'm utterly hopeless at maths, angles, directions, knowing my left from right. I'm very spatially challenged 😂 which makes it all the more miraculous.

Briningitallin · 03/09/2025 22:49

I’d love to be able to play the piano and he cello.

FairyBatman · 03/09/2025 22:50

I would love to be able to sing well. I sound like a cat being stepped on but I love to sing.

notanothernamechangemother · 03/09/2025 22:54

I'd like to be articulate and have amazing social skills. I'd like to have a presence when I walk in a room that engages people. I'm fairly socially awkward in real life and never know what to say

FamingolosForDays · 03/09/2025 23:03

Surf, speak another language and also be able to do all my own DIY. I'm not too bad at practical things round the house/garden but being able to look at something, cut up and put it on the wall would be awesome. Sadly I have to ask my uncle instead because I inevitably fuck it up somewhere. (And my walls are cement render so I can't drill into the bastards anyway!)

youalright · 03/09/2025 23:22

I'd love to be able to dance but like where people do backflips and spins ect. Sing, be able to speak a second language

mondaytosunday · 04/09/2025 00:02

I wish I could sing. Guess that’s a talent not a skill. I know you can train a voice but it has to have something to begin with!

Does it?

Or can you teach anyone with the right teacher/enough time and practice?

I'm interested to know

Fizzer5 · 04/09/2025 09:08

Singing to an average standard is learnable by nearly all people. Some men have more difficulty if they gave a 'groaning' sort of voice. You need someone who can sing and who has the ability to hear and illustrate the differences between the beginners voice and the tune. Singing lessons are not expensive.

I’d love to be able to cut hair, I wish I was a hair dresses but instead I’m an accountant ☹️

I would like to be able to sing. I would also, I have no idea why, would love to speak Welsh.

Diving is another one which is annoying because I’m a really good swimmer.

Also I can’t hula hoop or blow bubbles with bubble gum so I’m picking those as well.

I can't hula hoop or blow bubbles either, it has completely blighted my life! Seriously though I would love to have a knack for languages, and I would love to be musical, or at least to be able to sing.

😂😂😂 I wonder if any hairdressers wish they were accountants?

Leilaandtheloggerheads · 04/09/2025 10:56

Oh sooo many things!

Build and programme computers
calisthenics/pole (my friend does this, not just random!)
Piano (have done it on and off)
Read music
Understand other languages
Mechanics
Dance

I could probably go on and on 🤣

I'd love to be able to whistle through my fingers. Really loud.

I’d love to be able to do this too. I’d find it useful for calling the dog and when attending football matches. Maybe I need to head over to YouTube and find a tutorial 😗

Diy/construction type skills.

Tradies charge vast amounts where I live, there aren't enough of them and they are in demand. I know a few people who've upskilled to do things like install fences, build low brick wall in the garden, bathroom repairs, fit carpets, repaint properly. I'd like to have the confidence to have a go at learning these things. My brother in law has and said a lot of isn't that hard to do, doesn't require an unusual level of skill, if you are willing to put time in (obviously a tradie will often simply do it much faster). My brother in law has laid patios, built fully fitted cupboards etc in his spare time and they've look great & stood the test of time.

The OP did specify skills which aren't useful or practical though. Things like DIY, foreign languages, car mechanics etc would definitely come under the useful/practical umbrella, I think.

I'd like to be able to draw - specifically, I'd like to be able to draw people, and in a way that captures their personalities. When I read a book and picture my favourite characters, I'd like to be able to pick up a pen or pencil and get that image down on the page.

I'd also like to be really good at some sort of hardcore circus skill that really freaks people out and makes them nervous, like knife-throwing or sword-swallowing.

crappycrapcrap · 04/09/2025 17:29

Speaking a different language confidently or being able to play more than one instrument.

Ive never done a cartwheel which is a bit sad.

Plastictreees · 04/09/2025 17:33

Not really a skill, but I wish I was one of those people who could fall asleep anywhere or nap. I have to have near perfect conditions to sleep, and a daytime nap is out of the question even if I’m absolutely exhausted.

pinkstripeycat · 04/09/2025 17:34

Horse riding, flower arranging and sky diving

Geminis · 04/09/2025 17:39

I'd love to be able to sing and play the piano to a high standard.

I used to want to be able to fly a plane as well, decided to do it and got my licence last year. Anyone can do it you just need plenty of disposable ££.

somethingnewandexciting · 03/09/2025 21:14

I always wanted to be able to do back flips - would love to do them down the high street when good things happened (ok maybe not at my age but dreamt of it when younger)
I would love to be able to play the piano really well
Ditto guitar, although I would become a guitar wanker at parties without doubt

I know how to do a backflip but definitely do not have the strength or flexibility any more. I would probably rupture something if I tried.

I actually know (close friend) a gymnast who competed in the 1972 Olympics. She's early 70s now and can still do cartwheels, handstands and the splits but probably not a backflip.

Inextremis · 04/09/2025 17:43

I desperately want to be able to paint waves (as in the sea). I have been trying for months now, and it's still very hit 'n miss. I'd also like to be able to draw things accurately - my attempts are always a bit wobbly.

Unrealistically, I would love to learn to sky surf - ie jump out of a plane with a skateboard/surfboard strapped to my feet, and be able to 'surf' on the air. It's possible, I've seen videos - but I'm scared of heights, have never jumped out of a plane, and the only time I tried skateboarding I broke my elbow. Also, I'm in my 60s...Oh well - it's a dream!

Wordsmithery · 04/09/2025 18:02

I'd like to be able to upholster furniture and tie my shoelaces properly.

5128gap · 04/09/2025 18:20

Irish Dancing.

taxguru · 04/09/2025 18:24

I've always wished I could plaster a wall. We've done a lot of DIY and it's our one stumbling block really. Between us we can do basic plumbing and electrics, decorating, joinery etc etc., but whenever it comes to walls, we seem to spend ages on faffing around with filler and sanding, more filler and more sanding etc - would be so much easier just to skim the wall.
