Angela Rayner tax fail

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 03/09/2025 12:56

But it’s ok because she was just badly advised.
I’ll remember that excuse next time I fill in my tax return.

But still confused about one can have 2 main homes?

The problem here is that identical houses on the same street are selling for around half of what AR's house is valued at.
Make of that what you will.

It may be anything but identical inside.

Livelovebehappy · 04/09/2025 20:57

As the solicitors in Kent have now stepped forward and more or less saying Rayner is lying about them giving her tax advice, I think her fate is pretty much sealed. It’s just impossible for her to stay and not cause considerable damage to the Labour Party and Starmer’s leadership. I’m guessing if she is sacked, she might be invited into Corbyn’s new party. Out of the fat into the fire….

the80sweregreat · 04/09/2025 20:59

Your joking re Corbyn having her in his new party ! He was critical of the whole thing on tv today.

I don't dislike Rayner, and I have immense respect for her achievement, and I think she has probably tried to do the right thing for her disabled child and her family with an eye on the very long term, past her own death. While I disagree with her politically on every level, in this situation I would give her the benefit of the doubt. I don't think she has set out to cheat the tax rules here. Written as a Tory.

That’s not really what the problem is for her. She’s lied about receiving bad advice for a start.

As is your post, off thread but i failed to declare bank interest, believing i didn't need too as it was under the £1000 TH... HMRC accepted this, no penalty.

Late returns are late returns, the dates are very clear, as are when you have to fill out SA, there is even a calculator for it, no excuse.

HMRC do give special treatment, see Vodaphone deal or the Bankers in the 'city, they 've been pulled up for both.

Back to AR, has she said she sought advice from her conveyancers? or is this just what people have made up??

Back to AR, has she said she sought advice from her conveyancers? or is this just what people have made up??

Again, like about twenty pages ago, always slightly askance that people ask these questions that are a two second google away...

It has been reported ‘Sources’ close to the DPM (indeed Labour MPs were out in force doing the morning media rounds this am saying exactly the same thing) that she sought three separate pieces of legal advice. One from a conveyancer and two from trust law specialists.

Both the firm who acted as her conveyancer for the Brighton purchase, and the law firm involved in setting up the Trust, have felt the need to make a statement to clarify that they did not offer her advice as it had been stated.
Of course, it could be that she asked three totally unconnected conveyancers and trust law experts, but didn’t use them and then used these other companies without revisiting the question of advice on her SD.

I absolutely don't blame them either as their reputations are at stake through no fault of their own it would now seem.

This just seems to get murkier by the minute. AR throwing anybody under the bus to save her skin. It's really rather unpleasant indeed.

I really feel for these firms. She surely can't make allegations about them and not suffer repercussions?? Will they now take her to court?

Shes not a socialist so she won’t be invited to the new party 😂

All things aside, it’s still tax avoidance even if she sought legal advise for the tax avoidance. Most people would do this in order to look after their families, but most people aren’t self righteous, hypocritical, narcissist members of the cabinet who seem to spend every waking minute thinking up ways to stop other people looking after their own families with their money. This whole thing basically sums up the current Government.

What an utter mess politics in this country is in. All parties, of all colours just seem self serving, ideologically driven and frankly, useless.
I thought the least we could expect from Starmer and AR (not least because of the relentless attacks in the direction of the Tory’s) was a moral compass. But no.
It’s a cesspool.
We desperately need a new party, with new ideas.

I do think that Rishi Sunak was a morally decent and intelligent politician. Unfortunately let down by his party and he came to the fore at the wrong time. There are a great many good and decent politicians - on both sides of the political spectrum.

You’re entitled to your opinion but reading that you considered Sunak a morally decent person made me nearly fall off my chair 😂 Sunak might not have shouted about austerity, but he certainly delivered it. He cut Universal Credit by £20 a week, froze public sector pay, squeezed councils to the brink of bankruptcy, and loaded taxes like National Insurance onto ordinary families. He’s responsible for deepening the cost-of-living crisis.

friendlycat · 04/09/2025 21:40

It’s always the lies that do the final damage as they unravel.

Perhaps she naively thought that client confidentiality would cover her here. But two professional firms have now spoken out to state they did not provide her with the advice she is claiming she was given. They had to uphold their own professional reputations and I don’t blame them.

Obviously there may still be further evidence of advice that she received but it’s looking unlikely and if anything there’s no doubt more to come in dubious findings surrounding this saga.

I really can’t see any come back from what’s currently known and been said.

Even the location of this second property doesn’t look great for her far away from her constituents and her children, yet close by her on off boyfriend’s patch.
It’s rather odd that additional information is also suggesting that her former house is priced remarkably higher than any others similar in the vicinity.
I think she’s opened a can of worms with it all, which is top dollar ironical considering her voracious appetite for calling out others for their own previous actions some of which were perfectly within the framework of the law.

tramtracks · 04/09/2025 21:41

EasternStandard · 04/09/2025 21:00

That’s not really what the problem is for her. She’s lied about receiving bad advice for a start.

Her problems are:

  1. She (as a trustee) used her sons compensation fund to buy her share of the family home and used that as a deposit to buy an expensive flat 200 miles away from her family -with someone who left his pregnant wife for her (allegedly)
  2. She lied (allegedly) about obtaining legal advice for the tax payable on the second property.
  3. She didn’t pay the correct tax - and only fessed up once the torygraph outed her.
  4. The valuation of the property looks suspicious - and as a trustee she needs to act wholly in the best interests of her child. Was the trust ‘overpaying’ for her share in the house so she could pull out the maximum amount possible to use as a deposit for said flat. Is it in the child’s best interest? Why was this done just before her child turned 18 - the timing looks odd.
  5. The fact that she is the Labour Party ex union shouty activist who has spent years calling out Tory mps for much less than the above. In fact using the descriptive of ‘Tory scum’.

He also delivered one of the most socialist policies of furlough during Covid to keep businesses alive.

I lost all respect for her when she supported the attack on disabled people.

It sounds like her Kent solicitors going public about her claims being inaccurate will finish her off. Good riddance.

Oh ffs, he didn’t cut UC, he removed a temporary uplift which was in place for a specific reason for a limited time.

They always forget that bit; the bit that cost us all dear.

StressedEric · 04/09/2025 22:12

also , on a wider point, why have both AR and RR deployed tears when in political difficulties. I found AR’s interview with the very sympathetic Beth Rigby to be deeply manipulative.

Can you imagine the vitriol that they both would have deployed if senior Tory women had done similar - eg Liz Truss .
did she do think of Liz Truss’s children when denouncing her , or Nadhim Zahawi’s children when his local difficulties with HMRC were the political football of the day . What would have been her reaction if either of them had cried and said “ won’t you think about my children “

hypocrite

Still responsible. The poor excuses won’t help much.

I’m no Labour supporter and can’t wait until they’re out of office, but I don’t think it’s fair to blame someone who has acted in good faith based on legal advice from a qualified lawyer.

However, I remained to be convinced that this is the case here…

Whammyyammy · 04/09/2025 22:12

I cant believe she hasn't had the decency to resign or KS the backbone to sack her.
As long as we have a corrupt deputy PM with zero integrity the current govt is untrustworthy.
She knew exactly what she was doing, andvis only sorry she has been caught.

Whammyyammy · 04/09/2025 22:13

And as for a housing minister that didn't know you have to pay stamp duty..... what does that say???

I agree that if you’re going to be sanctimonious and accusatory of others as a politician then you’d better be squeaky clean in everything you do…

But there’s nothing necessarily wrong with tax avoidance (as distinct from evasion)… Anyone who pays into a pension, has an ISA or buys ‘duty free’ at the airport is avoiding tax!
