Angela Rayner tax fail

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 03/09/2025 12:56

But it’s ok because she was just badly advised.
I’ll remember that excuse next time I fill in my tax return.

But still confused about one can have 2 main homes?

Right.

He was a partner at Grant Thornton. That makes him an accountant, not a journalist.

Does that make Ange a carer, not a politician, as she has a L2 in Social Care not an MA in Politics?

He wasn’t a partner, merely a Tax Director. That’s not that senior in the world of accounting / tax practice. And he’s been out of practice for some time. So I’d agree he is an accountant, question whether he’s a tax specialist, and suspect he’s more of a tax generalist. But he can write :)

She blamed bad advice. It’s unlikely that happened.

The Times has just revealed that the conveyancing solicitors were Verrico, a small high-street, all-female practice in Folkestone. If they had never come across circumstances like Angela's before, I wonder if she was badly advised. Even so, she should have taken advice from an accountant too, so she knew what the total cost of the purchase was going to be.

Interesting point. She might also be a trade union official.

Yesterday I thought she should resign and was cross she’s all over the news ( rather than Farage being taken down in the US) but it seems more complex than that as new info has come to light so it’s all not quite how it first appeared, Guess we wait to see what the findings are.

I bet Sir K is praying for her exoneration. Whatever the findings are, the government and Labour are horribly damaged.

where does her disabled son live??

In the house in Aston, which has been adapted for his needs.

ok. so why on earth does she want to be in brighton? surely her time must be spent in either london or in her constituency/at home with her son? a residence in brighton can only be a second home. or am i missing something?

Tealpins · 04/09/2025 17:01

Presumably because she's eyeing up a seat in that constituency.

Which is fair enough. It's not a crime.

Also people commute to London from there.

Her on-off partner's ex-wife and children live in Brighton.

For CT purposes, she pays the 200% surcharge, it is a 2nd home but because she gave up her share of the marital home, the advice she had was it would count, for tax purposes, as a main residence.

Its pure conjecture to say she is eying up another seat, in all probability, Labour like the Tories, will have no safe seats.

Her son hasn't even got a trust fund of cash....its a share of a house held in trust.

nomas · 04/09/2025 17:16

“She is working hard now to rectify that, in contact with HMRC, to make sure that the correct tax is paid.”

Why didn’t she just call HMRC in the first place?!

Verrico are going to have to come out to defend themselves arn't they .
And will they get audited for giving out wrong advice if they have ?

billysboy · 04/09/2025 17:36

Angela Rayner should be concentrating on delivering the 1.5 m new homes In this parliament not having to explain her tax decisions

I expect they are dusting off their professional indemnity policy right now. As for defending themselves, they will have been told to keep quiet while the standards' commissioner does his work.

Goldplatedhinges · 04/09/2025 17:38

@AlertlimezebraCan you support these claims about how she used her son’s money with any evidence?

The sitting MP of 15 years is apparently very popular though.

She's just gone where her boyfriend needs to be (near his kids rather than her own).

I think they just did the conveyancing. And so will have acted on the answers Rayner gave to them about the SDLT1. So so their defence will be very straightforward. Rayner has said she asked for legal advice before buying the flat, but has been careful not to say who from. We know it's not Shoosmiths because they have made that clear.

To choose a high street conveyancing firm for a property transaction is one thing, though generally you get what you pay for so I don't know why she would. To use them for advice would, I think, fall well below the level of care HMRC would expect a taxpayer to take.

They've got duties of client confidentiality anyway.

Edited

She's admitted that the trust fund bought her share of the house.
