Angela Rayner tax fail

1000 replies

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 03/09/2025 12:56

But it’s ok because she was just badly advised.
I’ll remember that excuse next time I fill in my tax return.

But still confused about one can have 2 main homes?

That’s because she had no clue about the underpayment. Have you read anything beyond the headlines?

For CT purposes, she pays the 200% surcharge, it is a 2nd home but because she gave up her share of the marital home, the advice she had was it would count, for tax purposes, as a main residence.

Its pure conjecture to say she is eying up another seat, in all probability, Labour like the Tories, will have no safe seats.

Her son hasn't even got a trust fund of cash....its a share of a house held in trust.

Edited

We don't know how much the trust fund is, only that it now owns 75% of the house (as shown on the Land Registry).

We won't ever know what the trust fund consists of probably as the beneficiary of the trust fund is her son.

I expect they are dusting off their professional indemnity policy right now. As for defending themselves, they will have been told to keep quiet while the standards' commissioner does his work.

Indeed, they won't be saying anything until then., I suspect however they were only instructed to carry out the conveyancing, and will have relied on Rayner's answers to complete the stamp duty calculation and submission. No one would be so stupid as to ask a high street conveyancing firm for advice would they?

Where they might fall over is in having acted for her at all, because as a politically exposed client the KYC work and DD they should have done far exceeds that for a normal individual. Perhaps they didn't realise...

The Times has just revealed that the conveyancing solicitors were Verrico, a small high-street, all-female practice in Folkestone. If they had never come across circumstances like Angela's before, I wonder if she was badly advised. Even so, she should have taken advice from an accountant too, so she knew what the total cost of the purchase was going to be.

Good heavens, they're a tiny family practice local to me (and it's not Folkestone btw), I've used them. Why on earth would she choose them, nowhere near any of her three homes. How odd. Their website states they are conveyancers and can advise, amongst other things, on buying, selling, transfer of equity etc. Nowhere do they mention Trusts though.

LovelyLuluu · 04/09/2025 12:03

I don’t like Angela but in this instance feel that it’s wrong and unjust to have such a go at her. She is doing what any parent of a disabled child would do.

@Noras You are conflating things. Do you understand what that means?

You said she is doing what any parent of a disabled child would do.

Maybe you aren't expressing what you mean clearly enough.

Not paying the right amount of tax is not 'what any parent of a disabled child would do', is it?

I can imagine that if you sold your share of the family home to your disabled child who lived there also with your ex husband you would imagine it was your ex husband and child’s main residence.

What you 'imagine' is just that- lack of facts.

Angela herself has said they are doing 'nesting'. That she and her ex take turns at living with their son. So they are both using the house as and when. AND are you forgetting that it is her constituency? This is not some place where she happened to have a house. She's supposed to be 'on the ground' to answer residents' questions and be their MP!

There is no requirement for an MP to have a house in their constituency - Boris Johnson did not love in his. She was entitled to buy a property on Hove.

Angela Rayner choosing a small, local practice for an £800,000 property transaction when her personal circumstances are complicated is another example of her lack of judgement. In her position, she needs a firm of solicitors who can act for her in different circumstances and understand the bigger picture.

Joanna Verrico MD has responded to the Telegraph

EasternStandard · 04/09/2025 17:57

Joanna Verrico, managing director, told The Telegraph: “We acted for Ms Rayner when she purchased the flat in Hove. We did not and never have given tax or trust advice. It’s something we always refer our clients to an accountant or tax expert for.

“The stamp duty for the Hove flat was calculated using HMRC’s own online calculator based on the figures and the information provided by Ms Rayner.

“That’s what we used and it told us we had to pay £30,000 based on the information provided to us. We believe that we did everything correctly and in good faith. Everything was exactly as it should be.

More about being a scapegoat for Rayner.

muddyford · 04/09/2025 17:57

Exactly what I thought. All the people who had erroneous information from accountants and faced penalties.

This will be that firms worst nightmare.

Has she thrown a small family firm of solicitors under the bus to save her skin?

I also thought that house is Ashton was well overpriced. Why would that be?

A friend said to me this morning that this is the hidden issue that no-one is talking about. The valuation does not look realistic to people with local knowledge

It looks like she’s tried but they can defend themselves.

It doesn’t look like anyone gave her ‘bad advice’ as initially claimed.

I think their reputation is at stake so I don’t blame the MD. I think it’s ok to say we did nothing wrong if that’s the case.

I'd want to do what the MD has done too. Having had government-adjacent press jobs, I'm just surprised they haven't been asked to await the outcome if the investigation.

I mean I don’t think she intentionally defrauded the tax office. Her situation isn’t a common one. I believe it was a genuine mistake.

No one will admit to defrauding the tax man! It is a weak excuse.

PropertyD · 04/09/2025 18:12

Bravo the firm of solicitors for making the statement despite the fact they will have all sorts telling them to wait until the report is published. . We don’t know when the report will be out and providing what the firm is saying is true AR has more to explain. And why choose a firm in Kent? Is it so that she can do things under the radar.
