Vomit inducing rhetoric from ‘Labour’

OneKookyShark · 02/09/2025 17:49

Utterly utterly grim 🤮 and trying to out reform Reform and betraying everything Labour stands for at the same time. Not that this shower bear any resemblance to Labour values.

Aibu to think we can’t sink much lower as a country. I will vote for any socially progressive party that shows some vision and compassion.

Honestly for all this stuff I’ve seen on here (and in the papers) about flags, and I don’t think I’ve seen a single one.

Which makes me assume it’s mainly media hysteria.

There have been quite a lot where I am.

Here too. South coast. Plus anti-semitic graffiti.

I don't think it would be constructive for the government to come down hard on the flag thing. I don't like the St George's flag (just personal preference) or the reasons it's currently being plastered everywhere, but it is the English national flag so really shouldn't be that controversial in itself. It would be pretty authoritarian for the govt to come out against it and hand their opponents an easy political victory. I like Yvette Cooper and I think she's doing a pretty good job of walking an impossible tightrope atm.

ginasevern · 02/09/2025 18:04

To be honest the asylum system is a complete mess. People are understandably concerned which can't be ignored. You can't just tell people to put up and shut up because if they don't they're automatically racist. We can't sustain the levels of asylum seekers entering the country year on year, of whom a high percentage are single young men. Some of whom may or may not be fleeing persecution and who may or may not have criminal records. If it was thousands of white men coming into the country I'm pretty sure the reaction still wouldn't be one of joyous delight.

Orangepate · 02/09/2025 18:06

Come to Coalville, bloody flags are everywhere..

It is and it’s Farage’s fault really.

We used to be part of the Dublin accords which kind of meant that asylum seekers could be returned to the country of origin. But then Brexit.

As a lifelong labour voter I don’t think the present leadership bears even a passing resemblance to the labour party.

I gave KS the benefit of the doubt pre election because I understood that in order to actually achieve anything he first had to be elected and that meant trying to appeal to a broad range of views.

Now he has been elected he is in fact a devastating disappointment.

I don’t know what he stands for at all. I wonder if he does?

There is currently no party I could vote for at all.

Core labour voters are treated with disdain in favour of those at least halfway to Deform.

KS clearly thinks the bird in his hand will vote for him no matter what so better to chase two in a bush.

Current world politics is an utter shitshow and the UK is bollocks deep in the mire.

AutumnOffGrid · 02/09/2025 18:22

Oh dear.

Their policies are like a scattergram.

This way, that way, which way is up.

They’re absolutely desperate because they know that finally the British people have had enough and are vocalising it, and going to vote them out ASAP.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 02/09/2025 18:23

I love the “it’s not real, it’s all whipped up by the press” comments.

Senior ministers wouldn’t be scuttling around declaring their affection for English or union flags unless they were aware that the flag flying is a widespread thing.

BTW, I think it’s absurd to paint roundabouts and hang tatty polyester flags from lamp posts. I just think we should all be sensible and acknowledge the reality of any particular issue.

If you can find one that has a chance of being elected, do let me know.

Sorry, it is all so depressing right now.

Me too.

I was advised today by a friend to just go inwards and ignore it all for my own mental health. But it's a bit difficult as I don't like surprises and forewarned is forearmed.

And I think people are banking on this all being a storm in a teacup and once the weather turns everything will go back to "normal". I wish I could be so optimistic.

I agree, except that I don’t like Yvette Cooper. I honestly feel that if we all calmed down about the St George Cross and tried to view it as simply the English national flag, we’d take wind out of the sails of a lot of racists and things would be better. A government trying to stop people flying its country’s flag would look not only authoritarian but ridiculous.

I would however happily take down and burn every flag which has ‘England’ printed on it and similar stupidities.

It might do. But I suspect that the autumn’s budget will kill stone dead any Labour hopes of being seen as the “grown-ups” or as at all competent.

The parasitic issues like unhappiness with immigration and crime will just grow on the back of the (well-founded) discontent with this shower of useless, NUS throw-back North London lawyers.

EmeraldRoulette · 02/09/2025 18:43

@MistressoftheDarkSide may I ask what specifically you're worried about?

I'm a woman of colour, as you might know. I like seeing the flags of my country up. However, I do realise that there is an issue with it being hijacked by racists. I am old enough to remember being scared that the BNP would get into power and try and send me to a country I've never seen and know nothing about

I think number 10 might have actually done something sensible here in trying to reclaim the flag.

However.... I fully appreciate that the world is absolutely insane at the moment - 2nd only to you know what in terms of the vibes I would say - and I appreciate that I may be missing something. Or possibly quite a lot of things.

I think the media is absolutely piling on the doom and gloom and ramping up the notion of civil unrest etc. I wish it could be a bit more bloody responsible.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/09/2025 18:47

The fact is, immigration is going to be a huge factor for many people, whether racist or not, because of a) the cost when the country is broke, and b) the appalling lack of decent, affordable housing for so many people already here, whether native or not.

I absolutely respect your perspective and I hope that the comments by her aren't willfully misinterpreted by certain factions who seem to be emboldened at the moment.

It's not the flags in and of themselves, it's the weaponisation of them that irks me.

I've seen vandalism on private residences, and in our town we've got a vigilante group "keeping the peace" some of whom have been outed as having dodgy past records, criminal ones. We've also had an attack on an Orthodox Jewish teenager with an air rifle.

The general undertone of racism / xenophobia is concerning.

As I say, I'm hope you're right about the flag comments from Yvette Cooper, I truly do.

waltzingparrot · 02/09/2025 18:52

Keir Starmer particularly, has just carried on as he did in opposition, which is to switch policy to play to the loudest crowd. His cabinet don't seem to have any beliefs they'll actually stick by. I don't know why anybody thought he'd change when he got the top job.

I also think the government would be wise to fly a Union flag and a National flag from every government building (no other flags) to show it stands for British values and unity.

EmeraldRoulette · 02/09/2025 18:52

@PandoraSocks are they?

I don't really do media, so I don't know.

For me, the feelings are quite palpable. Because I live in a place that's affected by it, to a degree. Small protests.

I moved from London two years ago and that area was affected by it although it's been closed now.

And I have to go into a part of London that's affected by it for work.

So I do feel quite immersed in the situation

I'm also in an awkward spot because I had to make a fresh start in life for various reasons, I've found a social group here who have been a lifeline really

And they are totally horrified by all of it - the flags upset them, there's loads here - so I have to keep my mouth shut about what I really think.

maybe I should live up a mountain and just talk to random wildlife.

I totally agree with your first paragraph but I don't understand your second - why not the word England? Or do you mean you don't like the flag being "edited"
