To stop tipping?

Like ever?

Everything is already so expensive and sometimes the people Im paying earn more than I do.

I know some people will say that if I cant afford to tip the hairdresser, I cant afford to go there and maybe that's true. But when my cut and colour is already £160, an extra 10% is a lot.

Last time I ate out, the server showed us to the table, then pointed out the QR code to order, then disappeared until she bought our food and pointed out the QR code to pay. We didnt see her again. Then when we paid, the app had the cheek to ask for a 20% tip!

Delightful

Nothing wrong in that it's not compulsory

Im not saying that they are more deserving. I’ve not been in a position where I have needed the services of elderly care assistants but I’m sure if I did that they would get a generous tip at Christmas, just like my hairdresser, the bin men and the postie.

Not allowed to accept tips and gifts usually

If you know elderly care workers can’t accept tips and gifts comparing them with a worker that can is a moot point.

But it's wrong that they work far harder yet paid far less font you think? Maybe waiting staff should think about that and stop bleating. Or the ones that can actually put a bit of effort in if they want a tip

I tip the guys in my local Indian restaurant for example as they are friendly and helpful. I wouldn't tip staff in some other places as it comes across that the customers are nothing but an inconvenience @

There are a lot of people who don’t work as hard as carers but get paid more. That doesn’t mean everyone should have the mindset of carers have to work harder than you so because of that inequality I’m not going to tip you. By that theory the guys in your Indian restaurant don’t deserve a tip either. Ultimately if you want to tip or not it doesn’t affect me and likewise whoever I tip and how much shouldn’t bother you. Enjoy your evening.

I’d not go to restaurants if I couldn’t afford to tip. It’s part of the deal, imo.

Not true in the UK or anywhere except the US.

AliceMaforethought · 03/09/2025 22:10

I tend to tip in restaurants out of habit, but I agree it doesn't really make sense. I kind of resent feeling I have to tip cab drivers. Fine if I have a heavy bag which they help me with, but just driving from a to b with no bag shouldn't really warrant a tip imo. I tip anyway out of politeness, but I do sometimes wonder why I do it.

Taxis by us have started adding an extra charge for bags. Not suitcases or things for the boot but literally if you have a daypack or a carrier bag. Also the black cabs will just add another £1-£2 when they press their machine for who knows what reason.

Depending on the driver and whether you have your packed lunch in a separate bag to your handbag the journey to the train station from my house can be anything between £6 and £11.

That isnt demand driven pricing, Uber prices are even more bizarre!

Last time I did this journey, it was £7.40. The driver clearly expected me to say "keep the change" when I gave him £8. It was a bit awkward sitting there waiting for him to realise I wanted my change.

Im sure taxi drivers dont earn much but I earn £32,000 full time so Im hardly rolling in it (I know Im better off than a lot of people).

I have never tipped a hairdresser.

DavAtTheCampaignForMoreBankHolidays · 05/09/2025 16:08

This is a new one. Online shops asking for tips! 🤣🤣🤣
I was tempted to leave the shop mame in for their pure cheekiness!

Its a bit awks though innit, i'd hate it if i was at the table

elevengrandchildren · 05/09/2025 17:13

I don’t tip and never have, people who tip feel guilty when they don’t tip but if you’ve never tipped then it feels completely normal not to tip.

dynamiccactus · 05/09/2025 17:47

I've never tipped the hairdresser. It costs £45 for a haircut and close to £100 for highlights! I'll round up a taxi fare if it's say £9 to £10 but that's all.

I find tipping quite condescending as well as if I am some sort of Lady Bountiful.

Keep the change is one thing, giving people 10-25% tips for just doing their job is ludicrous. And I am not at all convinced that they are shared fairly, despite the recent law changes. Also if one particular member of staff has been attentive, I want them to get it anyway, not the whole team.

Not true in the UK or anywhere except the US.

And even in the US, lots of states have minimum wage rules and even if they don't, they are never going to see you again and vice versa so who cares really. I've not been to the US for 20 years though and won't be while Trump is there, but I'd be quite stressed by it all if I went there.

dynamiccactus · 05/09/2025 17:52

curiositykilledthiscat · 02/09/2025 16:28

Yep, at many events in London during my 20s and was occasionally tipped. Was there a point to your question, btw?

No but I've worked in retail and not received any. That said back then there was no minimum wage so waiting staff did need the tips to make up their poor wages. Things are different now and I did earn more in my Saturday jobs than I would have done in a cafe.

RoseGlass7 · 05/09/2025 18:06

Yanbu. Tipping is very outdated.

I had a mediocre meal at the balcony bar in st Ives and they added £8 service charge.
I went and complained to the manager and got it back.

As long as you are polite about it what is the issue?

Timeforabitofpeace · 08/09/2025 12:57

I don’t tip my hairdresser. She owns the salon and is doing very well. She charges plenty.

Yes service charge is added at Ivy. You are at liberty to decline paying it

Greenwitchart · 10/09/2025 21:33

I don't tip & never feel guilty about it.

My own salary is not great & everything is so expensive now that I simply can't justify the extra cost.

I used to tip regularly maybe 10 or 15 years ago but since covid & the cost or living crisis, I stopped tipping.

Meadowland · 10/09/2025 22:05

I always tip friendly staff as a)I feel they deserve it and b) it encourages them to be friendly.
I never tip if staff are not friendly though

RaraRachael · 10/09/2025 22:12

I've never tipped in restaurants. Eating out nowadays is extortionate without adding to the cost.
I ask for service charge to be removed too.
