To stop tipping?

Like ever?

Everything is already so expensive and sometimes the people Im paying earn more than I do.

I know some people will say that if I cant afford to tip the hairdresser, I cant afford to go there and maybe that's true. But when my cut and colour is already £160, an extra 10% is a lot.

Last time I ate out, the server showed us to the table, then pointed out the QR code to order, then disappeared until she bought our food and pointed out the QR code to pay. We didnt see her again. Then when we paid, the app had the cheek to ask for a 20% tip!

I get annoyed when paying at the bar they ask if you want to leave a tip! They’ve just poured a bloody drink not been attentive and looked after us at the table unbelievable!

I keep hearing that people in hair salons tip "the girl that washes my hair" and I always wonder how/when they do it. Once they are done and up with the towel wrapped around their head, they give a two-pound coin to the girl and proceed to the hairdresser's chair? Or do they do it before they lean into the sink? Or they seek out the girl once finished and paying at the till?

I wonder this as I have only never had a different person wash my hair than my hairdresser on one occasion, so was surprised to see it is still common.

And then I heard the hairdresser tell the girl off for me giving wrong advice for my hair type.

Zanatdy · 02/09/2025 06:44

I always tip in a restaurant, though maybe a QR code order, much less. Stopped tipping the hairdresser, last appt was over £250 and the machine didn’t ask if I wanted to tip, so I didn’t as I had no cash. I felt it was expensive enough already.

FudgeSundae · 02/09/2025 06:49

I always tip in restaurants but was taken aback in GBK over the weekend to be asked for BOTH a 12.5% service charge AND a tip? Since I’d ordered myself on a tablet I just unticked the service charge and left a 10% tip but I thought very cheeky!

minishiteboard · 02/09/2025 06:50

I've asked for service charge to be removed many times.

Pricelessadvice · 02/09/2025 07:03

I’ve always felt that tips are for when people go above and beyond, yet it seems to be expected now that people get them for their normal level of work.

For those saying minimum wage makes tipping unnecessary - I am sure it is possible to support oneself on minimum wage if one works full time, but with the current cost of living I doubt it's easy! I earn significantly more than minimum wage (not showing off, just making a point) and I still feel money is tight these days and that I have to make a lot of sacrifices. Yes I can afford a holiday (so maybe I should shut up!) but I don't buy new clothes basically ever, very rarely eat out, could not afford to run a car....

Yes people can perhaps eat and pay the bills on minimum wage, at a push and depending on the bills. But can they afford any of the things that make life pleasurable?.Holidays, theatre trips, days out, hobbies......

Maybe we need to stop thinking a minimum wage lifestyle is sufficient for anyone .....

Back to tipping, I don't eat out much but would tip in a restaurant where they come to take your order, if I could afford it. I don't tip my hair dresser as I can barely afford to pay her as it is -but I always book the salon owner - in the past where i have booked an employee I have tipped.

I always tip delivery people if the delivery is large, as I live in a 2nd floor flat with no lift. They are always astonished. But in my opinion, delivery people are unsung heroes, doing a shit but necessary job in appalling conditions, and they make my life easier, so.....

Yes the MNW argument doesnt float BUT the point is, lots of jobs are NMW and yet only a few are tipped. If you tip one person on NMW because you want to top up their wages, then why not all NMW employees?

I stopped tipping in the late 1990s, after the minimum wage was introduced.

Itsallabouttea · 02/09/2025 12:25

Quite surprised (but pleased) at these replies as most tipping threads I've seen on here seem to be 90% people saying you're an awful stingy git if you don't tip. I don't tip for all the reasons given by pp- we have a legal minimum wage in the uk and if we're saying it's not enough for waiting staff then it's not enough for anyone on it, so we either tip everyone or no-one.

GreenWheat · 02/09/2025 12:25

I don't think tipping works in a cashless society. Back in the day, you could just hand some cash discreetly to the hairdresser, or leave cash on your restaurant table knowing your server would pick it up directly and it would go straight to them.

Now you have to faff about with adding and removing things at the card machine, it just doesn't have the same smoothness to it, plus at restaurants you never know exactly where that money is going. It puts people off.

That's true. It's a bit awkward saying please can you add x to the machine isnt it but then it's a case of remembering to take cash out and then spend some so you have change...

@Danikm151i saw a great instagram on what a salon makes out of a cut and highlights. It was something unreal, like 80p. It could have been all shite, but it did make me think.

whichever one in Chancellor - is it Reeves or Raynor - should be locked up for what they have done to the service industry

user2848502016 · 02/09/2025 12:56

I only ever tip for a large group meal, it should be a “nice to do if you can afford it” rather than an assumption in this country seeing as employers are supposed to pay waiting staff etc a minimum wage.
It’s different in the US where staff rely on tips

Firststop · 02/09/2025 13:05

Chompingatthebeat · 31/08/2025 15:52

I think restaurant staff should be tipped, but agree the example you gave was a bit much

Why? It's a genuine question. Why when restaurant staff are paid at least minimum wage, the same as e.g. retail staff should they be tipped and not shop assistants or the GP receptionist?

This is what I've never understood, why tip a taxi but not a bus driver? A nail tech but not a HCA? Etc etc

WaltzingWaters · 02/09/2025 13:10

I only ever tip for exceptional service. I work in care for little more than minimum wage- a demanding and sometimes potentially dangerous job. We’re not allowed to accept any kind of tips from family.

What I don't understand is why some minimum wage jobs are expected to live on NMW but others expect/need a tip.

And if I've paid £65 for a haircut that took 45 mins max, or £150 for dinner for 4 occupying a table for 1.5 hours, why a business can't pay their staff properly and make a profit.

Coffeeishot · 02/09/2025 13:16

I give the young woman who washes my hair a couple of quid, I tip at reasturants usually change maybe a fiver if there is a group of us. Op you obviously don't have to tip but I think if you are affording £160 on a haircut you can put a few £s in the tip jar.

Cut and highlights takes maybe 2hrs. You reckon someone works for 40p an hour?

If they are not salaried how much do you think hairdressers earn?

I'm assuming they mean that's what the salon makes after staff and other costs have been paid, but still find it unlikely.

rockingthekasbah · 02/09/2025 13:18

@DavAtTheCampaignForMoreBankHolidaysthe SALON makes that after all x’s are taken out

rockingthekasbah · 02/09/2025 13:18
