To stop tipping?

Like ever?

Everything is already so expensive and sometimes the people Im paying earn more than I do.

I know some people will say that if I cant afford to tip the hairdresser, I cant afford to go there and maybe that's true. But when my cut and colour is already £160, an extra 10% is a lot.

Last time I ate out, the server showed us to the table, then pointed out the QR code to order, then disappeared until she bought our food and pointed out the QR code to pay. We didnt see her again. Then when we paid, the app had the cheek to ask for a 20% tip!

I've asked for service charge to be removed many times.

Delightful

LlynTegid · 02/09/2025 13:21

I don't think you should take a view never to tip, but it should be for service much better than expected.

As for automatically adding a service charge, it should be illegal and the penalty being your meal is free if it happens.

I'm happy to pay service charge

@DavAtTheCampaignForMoreBankHolidaysthe SALON makes that after all x’s are taken out

Even if it's the salon that makes 40p an hour, not the staff...
So in my HD, there are 5 members of staff. They all work part time I think so let's say they do 20hrs a week each. So that's 100hrs for the salon. So according to the 80p argument, the whole salon takes £40 a week (assuming that's minus everything including wages) or £160 a month if all the staff are booked all the time and working their full hours.
Really? It seems very, very unlikely.

No idea but not 40p an hour. 🤣

Well I think that was probably an example, It doesn't sound like you are bothered about tipping which is fine isn't it? you don't have to. but I think making out is a rising cost issue is a bit low, you just don't want to factor in a tip.

hattie43 · 02/09/2025 13:29

The problem is most ‘ service ‘ roles expect tops . I am a tipper but am starting to resent it because it’s so expected . Once you start tipping someone it’s really hard to stop because you don’t want to offend / upset them .

MyElatedUmberFinch · 02/09/2025 13:29

Itstwelveoclocksomewhere · 01/09/2025 21:48

Are you sure you can do this?
Its a long time since I was on a cruise but I think the service charge wasn't voluntary AND we ended up leaving money in the room for housekeeping when we left.

You can definitely do this.

rockingthekasbah · 02/09/2025 13:32

@DavAtTheCampaignForMoreBankHolidaysi am not making the argument, I am telling you what I saw in a video. But let’s consider the outgoing:
VAT
Salary
NIC
Rent
Rates
Product
Insurance

that’s all my addles brain can come up with at the moment.

i think, if you are a ‘sole trader’ I would be less likely to tip for sure. Especially in the home.

i don’t think it’s always been this close a margin for profit, i think it’s currently the way things are.

What is low about it? Genuine question.

When I was paying £100 for a hair cut etc, I would factor in an extra tip to my overall cost. Im not begrudging the HD charging more, I appreciate their costs have gone up. But it does mean that the money that went to a tip now has to go to the service itself. I dont have the additional 15% or whatever to add to the cost of the service anymore.

I know people say "if you cant afford to tip, then you cant afford to go there" but Im pretty sure the HD would rather I spent £160 and didnt tip than not go at all.

As I say, Ive no idea but a business cant survive on such narrow margins. I appreciate that small businesses (including hd) are closing but equally plenty arent so they must be making more than 40p

I'm not arguing either because I dont have the knowledge to. 😆

@Danikm151i saw a great instagram on what a salon makes out of a cut and highlights. It was something unreal, like 80p. It could have been all shite, but it did make me think.

whichever one in Chancellor - is it Reeves or Raynor - should be locked up for what they have done to the service industry

If they’re making 80p on a cut and highlights their business model is shite.

My DD works in a gastropub - posh tourists and the local landed gentry are its main customers. Her share of the cash tips for a month was £45. She has no idea how much she will get from card tips. She reckons about half tip and half don’t and she doesn’t mind either way. When you tip you’re not tipping the server. You’re tipping everyone who works at the pub. Even when someone hands her money and says, ‘That’s just for you - not to share’. She smiles sweetly, thanks them, and then later puts it in the tip jar. I don’t bother now - I don’t carry cash and they usually just bring the machine for you to tap your card without adding a tip. I think it’s dying out here - and so it should. Waiting staff should have to suck up to people to get tips. They’re professional trained staff who don’t need charity.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 02/09/2025 13:39

I also don't get why you would tip more for someone bringing out a steak or bringing out a bowl of chips. The service is the same but one is £30 and one is £5 so based on 10% you would pay either £3 or 50p because you've ordered something more expensive. It doesn't make sense. And restaurant prices have gone up so much that tips now seem extortionate.

WoollyRosebud · 02/09/2025 13:40

I have never felt entirely comfortable tipping but yes if service is good I will. An example being yesterday when I had my hair cut. The hairdresser was fabulous and took such trouble discussing with me what I would like, what was achievable and then throughout the cutting process checking I was happy with what was happening. This was a complete restyle in a place I had never visited before so the level of care shown was much appreciated. The finished result more than exceeded anything I had expected so I was happy to leave a tip. So basically if the service exceeds my expectations I will tip, otherwise no.

MyElatedUmberFinch · 02/09/2025 13:43

BigLooser · 01/09/2025 21:06

Somehow I cannot imagine handing this girl money once I am raising from the sink. Just feels so unnatural. She is working there and I am paying the bill. It's like I am giving alms to the poor.

I more than happy to help a youngster out who is starting out in life. I remember how chuffed my DC were when they got tips doing their paper rounds and other starter jobs.

rockingthekasbah · 02/09/2025 13:45

@MayaPinionso you don’t think the chefs who cook or food, or the pot wash that does all the dishes deserves tips? I would say the pot wash deserves more than anyone.

but, this all comes back to the central point. The current government have made a) the cost of living so high and b) added taxation on businesses meaning that there is not so much profit. So everyone suffers.

think back to 2008, when only brand restaurants could afford to survive. The UK was one of the leading food capitals and now the average palate is Nandos and Wagamama (no shade as I love both of these) as independents couldn’t afford to stay afloat. It seems we are back here again. And - PS - both of these now so QR code ordering and paying.

@DavAtTheCampaignForMoreBankHolidaysim not throwing shade on your argument. Yes, you shouldn’t feel obliged to tip and it is not mandatory. It is a reward on effort, after all

koolkatxx · 02/09/2025 14:02

You said you couldn't afford tips or with everything being so expensive you didn't feel it was necessary (paraphrasing here) you just don't want to tip as I said if you can afford to eat out or get £160 haircut you can afford to tip, you just don't want to and are trying to justify it.

This is a ridiculous argument. If you have £160 you can afford £160 haircut, not a tip.

TheGreatWesternShrew · 02/09/2025 14:37

I don’t tip… they’re paid a wage. Meals all come with automatic service charge now anyway. I’ve never tipped my hairdresser and he still cried when I moved away and put me in touch with a friend of his in my new town.

It should be included in the advertised price … Otherwise, why shouldn’t Tesco add a service charge when you’re at the till!

Service charge is usually advertised Supermarket prices cover service.

I give the young woman who washes my hair a couple of quid, I tip at reasturants usually change maybe a fiver if there is a group of us. Op you obviously don't have to tip but I think if you are affording £160 on a haircut you can put a few £s in the tip jar.

If your haircut is £160 I think the salon/hairdresser doesn’t need the tip

curiositykilledthiscat · 02/09/2025 15:37

If the person has gone above and beyond for me, then fine. I often ask for the service charge to be removed - I always get a look of confusion and slight disdain, but I don’t give a shit. The companies who add the charge know damn well that many customers don’t know you don’t have to pay it or are too meek to get it removed.

Tipping culture has gone way overboard. Do the prolific tippers realise there’s a minimum wage in the UK and many other countries? I don’t tip the barista at Caffè Nero for serving me my daily coffee, the bus drivers for taking me to and from work every day, or my hairdresser every month for cutting my hair. Waiting staff doing the job well that they’re paid to do are no different.

HeadsWinTailsLose · 02/09/2025 16:09

I’d be interested to know if those who don’t tip have ever worked in hospitality.

Yep, I have. Didn’t really see why I was tipped in the hospitality job vs my other minimum wage supermarket shop tbh.
