To ask for the ultimate vote on separate duvets vs shared on a super-king bed

Just that really. We're about to buy a super-king zip and link, and we'll need new bedding so I need to know for once and all whether to take the risk on two separate duvets!

Context: I'm really struggling with sleep right now, so minimising any disruption from my partner moving about sounds good. However, I sleep with a top sheet so this would mean changing my preferred bedding set up to duvet only (no top sheet).

If I went for separate duvets I'd go for doubles. I already know single would feel too drafty for me.

YANBU: separate duvets are the way to go
YABU: stick with the shared duvet - you'll have plenty of space on a super king.

Obviously the best solution for good sleep is two duvets, at least doubles. Ideally in your own bedrooms.

dudsville · 30/08/2025 07:50

It was such a great decision for us to have separate duvets. We have doubles.

@Dearg what about 2 people and a 4 year old? That’s what I’m wondering about separate duvets… I guess we take turns sharing with the wriggly child! Or make him bring his single with him. 3 duvets.

Definitely separates!! We have doubles on a California king (giant!) bed which works perfectly for us. It used to work with giant diverts on smaller beds but definitely not now. Plus our children are very often in our bed come morning. They are both hot sleepers and if we share and the kids join us, they kick the duvet down (having placed themselves in the middle) so there is a three (or 4!) way directional battle going on. If they do want covering, there’s enough room for an adult plus a child under a double.
I mistakenly bought and washed some super king sets so in my belligerence put the super king duvet back on. My sleep has been shit ever since. I keep wanting to put the doubles
back on but my husband keeps (helpfully) remaking the beds before I can switch them. I’m making this my top objective of today.

gruebleen · 30/08/2025 07:56

Separate duvets here too. I think singles work best - with bigger duvets some of it hangs over one edge and can tend to slip off.

Cantsleepdontsleep · 30/08/2025 08:00

I think he likes the cuddle factor of one duvet, although he also sleeps better with separates. I think I like the defence factor, especially in the middle of the night (no more willy prodding and softens kids kicks). When you first get in, the doubles over lap so a good night cuddle isn’t any different. Then I bugger off to my side of the bed, wrap my duvet and can ignore everyone else.

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 30/08/2025 08:06

Two duvets, I have feather/down and he has synthetic. Chuck a massive quilt over the lot to make it look nice. Super king bed. Everyone is happy.

IDreamOfElectricSheep · 30/08/2025 08:17

2 separate duvets. Bedspread/throw over the bed to make it look nice when made.

Madamswearsalot · 30/08/2025 08:29

Separate duvets all the way! And for aesthetics we have a cover that’s also an extra layer in winter (for him - I’m a 4.5 tog person in winter!)

groma · 30/08/2025 08:37

Separate duvets!
No more duvet thieving in the night
Easier to wash
Easier to change
Different togs as needed
We both sleep better

IsItWickedNotToCare · 30/08/2025 08:39

We have separate single duvets, with a quilt over the top. It's great. My husband tosses and turns and lifts the duvet every time he moves so I was getting woken up every five minutes before. The separate zip link mattresses also mean I don't feel him moving around. Happy sleep 😴 💤 xxx

VeryStressedMum · 30/08/2025 09:03

I am considering getting 2 doubles after changing the duvet cover on the super king, it took so long the duvet wasn’t sitting right in it in the end I just had to leave it as it was.
Also I don’t really find it big enough, dh is big with really broad shoulders so ends up taking more of the duvet and because our bed is two singles as it’s a sleep motion we sleep quite far apart.
It’s really improved our sleep quality but the duvet situation is still annoying.

GameWheelsAlarm · 30/08/2025 09:05

Separate double duvets. It doesn't matter how big a shared duvet is, a duvet-hogger can still hog it.

Plastictreees · 30/08/2025 09:15

Who are all these people sleeping with separate duvets?! Is it an age thing? I’m in my thirties and I’m pretty sure none of my friends do this (we frequently visit each other and stay overnight), unless they are stealthily hiding the extra duvet!

Wildywondrous · 30/08/2025 09:16

Another vote for separate for the reasons everyone has listed, I also find it easier to get bedding as some places don't do many superking.

Becs258 · 30/08/2025 10:14

We have one king size duvet that’s 15 tog on one side, and much lighter the other. Perfect compromise.

mamagogo1 · 30/08/2025 10:16

One duvet for me, hate it in Germany when they give you two separate ones but I’m also not keen on superkings, too big, I like snuggling up, so I’m not the right person to ask (I love it when there’s only a double 😁)

IhadaStripeyDeckchair · 30/08/2025 10:19

Separate duvets on the largest bed you can get is the answer.

Each person can have the togg rating & weight that suits them throughout the year & duvet theft becomes a thing of the past.

CeciliaDuckiePond · 30/08/2025 10:20

Separate beds are the way to go if you are struggling with sleep! You can't beat your own double or king sized bed and you can have whatever bedding you want, and of course no one snoring or breathing stale breath over you or kicking you accidentally or 'stealing' the duvet! You can also take as long as you like reading or whatever you might like to do to help you nod off and it doesn't matter if you need different alarms in the morning.

It could be an age thing. I wasn't bothered when I was younger, but when I was younger I used to go to sleep quickly and sleep well!

We have separate, a weird ikea size which is 155 x 220 so extra long and about halfway between a single and double width. It does mean we can only get bedding from Ikea but I don't mind. I do prefer one shared mattress though - couldn't be doing with a gap or that weird bridge thing! 155cm is just wide enough to cover both of us if we are, er, cuddled up. DH was not keen on 2x singles until we figured this part out.

I switched because I found changing a double duvet an absolute faff to the point I avoided it for far too long, and because I can fit these in my washing machine without throwing off the spin cycle, whereas washing a king size duvet was the death knell for our old washing machine (it was 9 years old so probably not doing great anyway).

poolcrew · 30/08/2025 18:32

Separate. I need ALL the corners

Astrabees · 30/08/2025 18:32

We are getting a new bed soon and will be getting two duvets for it - probably two singles on a king size. We have happily slept under one duvet on a double bed for 40 years but now have two little dogs who like to sleep between us which takes up a lot of the duvet. I will be by putting a strip of fleece up the B middle so they are nice and cozy.

Bungle1985 · 16/11/2025 09:24

@NameChangedForThis2025 what did you decide in the end?

Just ordered a superking and found this thread. Considering two double duvets after reading it rather than two singles.

any advice 😁

I do this for our cat! A little blanket in between us, she loves it.

We have two singles on a super king and they work perfectly. I think doubles would be too big and bulky. The two single already overlap.
I switched to singles about 5 years ago and I am still amazed at quite how much it improves my sleeping.
