To ask for the ultimate vote on separate duvets vs shared on a super-king bed

Just that really. We're about to buy a super-king zip and link, and we'll need new bedding so I need to know for once and all whether to take the risk on two separate duvets!

Context: I'm really struggling with sleep right now, so minimising any disruption from my partner moving about sounds good. However, I sleep with a top sheet so this would mean changing my preferred bedding set up to duvet only (no top sheet).

If I went for separate duvets I'd go for doubles. I already know single would feel too drafty for me.

YANBU: separate duvets are the way to go
YABU: stick with the shared duvet - you'll have plenty of space on a super king.

Best decision we ever made was to have separate duvets. I have a low tog feather and DH prefers a higher tog synthetic, so everyone is happy and sleeps so much better as a consequence.

Iris2020 · 29/08/2025 20:33

Seperate. It definitely improves sleep quality.

TheAlcott · 29/08/2025 20:35

Separate double duvets. You will never go back.

Squirrelblanket · 29/08/2025 20:36

We've had separate duvets for years. It's the best!

Plastictreees · 29/08/2025 20:36

We’ve got a super king and sharing one duvet hasn’t been a problem at all, it’s pretty big. We have additional blankets we could use if needed.

I couldn’t be bothered putting a duvet away everyday, as I don’t think two duvets on one bed would look aesthetically pleasing!

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 29/08/2025 20:40

one of my hotel pet peeves is when I go on holiday and there are two duvets on the bed instead of one!
I hate it! I hate having to get under one duvet for a cuddle, that’s not big enough to cover two people. I hate having to keep a little duvet over me at night. I hate how they look on the bed!
No fence sitting here!

BruceAndNosh · 29/08/2025 20:42

2 singles for us but we're both quite small

Absentmindedsmile · 29/08/2025 20:43

2 double duvets - life changer!

WhatAboutTheOtherOne · 29/08/2025 20:47

Two duvets. It’s so much better. I sleep better and it’s easier for laundry.

Amonkeyisnotacitykid · 29/08/2025 20:50

We have a super king size. Memory foam mattress that really helps minimise movement when he tosses and turns. Plus 2 separate double duvets, both different togs. It's the best we can do until a child moves out and then seperate rooms for sleeping!

ClaredeBear · 29/08/2025 20:51

I voted incorrectly. Get separate duvets - you will not go back.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 29/08/2025 20:52

You could line the underside of your duvet with a sheet?

The only issue with two duvets is when both are dragged away at 2am, as it somehow irritates even more than when he nicks all of one as he rolls over.

FloralAllTheWay · 29/08/2025 21:07

Super king zip and link was the best thing we ever bought. You cannot feel the other person moving about anywhere near as much as a shared mattress. We feel the difference when we stay in hotels. You will definitely have more space in the bed.

Pros of separate duvets, a double is 200x200 cm so you never have to figure out which way is the right way. You can tuck it all around you like a cocoon. You can have different duvet weights.

A super king duvet cover is 260x220cm and I labelled my duvet so I know which the top and bottom are. I can manage to put it on myself but Dh and I tend to do the duvet cover together because it isn't that easy to wrestle it in. However, we have always had a super king duvet even when we had a 5ft bed so I am used to it and I used to do housekeeping in a hotel so bed making is something I enjoy.

Some folk will put a throw cover over the top of the bed when they have separate duvets as they don't like the look of it.

Handmethegunandaskmeagain · 29/08/2025 21:09

Two duvets. We have European singles, which are bigger than standard singles but slightly smaller than double duvets. Works perfectly.

Simonjt · 29/08/2025 21:10

We have two single duvets, european single so bigger than UK singles, although we tend to find we often just use one. Is a zip link not uncomfortable when one of you is laying in the midlde, or do you have to squash on one side for a cuddle?

ThankyouBakedP0tato · 29/08/2025 21:12

Separate beds

WrittenThatWay · 29/08/2025 21:13

We have two single duvets and I will never go back, whenever we stay in a hotel with one duvet I suddenly remember why we made the change. King sized bed, separate duvets, really firm mattress and I’m barely aware he’s in the bed with me 👌🏼

RandomMess · 29/08/2025 21:13

The only thing better than separate duvets is separate rooms so his snoring doesn’t disturb me.

idkwhattodoanm · 29/08/2025 21:17

We sleep on a King Bed with SuperKing blanket. It’s just right!

TenaciousDeeds · 29/08/2025 21:20

I say a big no. We have a super-king with one duvet and it’s fine.

We recently stayed in an apartment in Europe with a super-king and separate single duvets and hated it (loved the apartment). It was winter and we both kept waking up cold as the singles didn’t provide that dome of warmth that a double duvet does - that’s a big factor IMO.

BeautifulDayFor · 29/08/2025 21:25

Super king and 2 double quilts. Hated sharing. We have a thin super king quilt which I pull over the top so the bed looks tidy (when I can be bothered!).

ARichtGoodDram · 29/08/2025 21:31

2 double duvets. One super king throw to cover the bed if you want it to look nicer. I rarely bother with ours.

SiobahnRoy · 29/08/2025 21:33

Separate rooms ftw

Checkard · 29/08/2025 21:36

35 years together, separate duvets.
Visitors were given separate duvets on kingsize beds and were all converted.

I don't know how people share.
Evdn more so menopausal women.
We have different togs.
Me 4.5 in winter
Him 13.5 in winter.

GreyAreas · 29/08/2025 21:41

Singles so I never have to battle with putting a double duvet on again.
