To ask for the ultimate vote on separate duvets vs shared on a super-king bed

Just that really. We're about to buy a super-king zip and link, and we'll need new bedding so I need to know for once and all whether to take the risk on two separate duvets!

Context: I'm really struggling with sleep right now, so minimising any disruption from my partner moving about sounds good. However, I sleep with a top sheet so this would mean changing my preferred bedding set up to duvet only (no top sheet).

If I went for separate duvets I'd go for doubles. I already know single would feel too drafty for me.

YANBU: separate duvets are the way to go
YABU: stick with the shared duvet - you'll have plenty of space on a super king.

We have separate duvets. I love a heavy quilt to roll in all year, DH is always warm, he likes a light quilt.

Elsvieta · 29/08/2025 22:05

Separate. What's to stop you having a separate top sheet too, if that's what you like?

Aboutmeabouttime · 29/08/2025 22:21

Two duvets every time!
Did it a few years ago and now if we go to a hotel I ask for an extra one… I can’t share any more 🤣 DH has a king size light weight (tall so he likes the length), I have a double heavier weight one, works perfrctly!

Theyreeatingthedogs · 29/08/2025 23:25

Got to be 2 double duvets on a super king size. We can have different tog ratings too. Easier to put on double duvet covers than a super king size.

randomchap · 30/08/2025 00:09

Separate duvets worked for us. I could have my captain America cover and she her wonder woman one

Seriously though, separates worked for us as we liked different togs.

BernardButlersBra · 30/08/2025 00:23

Another vote for separate

My husband does what l call the "Swiss roll technique" where he rolls and rolls the duvet round himself. Leaving me cold and angry. Cue middle of night rows and tussling. I need my own duvet

AlpacaMittens · 30/08/2025 02:47

We went for separate duvets last year - game changer! 💯

avignon1234 · 30/08/2025 03:23

Good tips here, we have a superking but one superking duvet, I have nothing to moan about, but he always says I claim it and roll it under me, so he ends up with next to nothing. We both sleep at the very margins of the bed too, back to back, so there is a massive gap in the middle, full of duvet, but no-one under it. This has reminded me that there may be another solution ! Yeah, I think separate duvets for you would work, and maybe for me too. x

BourgeoisBabe · 30/08/2025 03:45

Switched to separate duvets (singles) on our super king years ago after years of fighting over temperature, draught tunnels, pulling the duvet offf each other etc. Love it so so much. It's the only way to go.

SlicedMelon · 30/08/2025 03:50

I LONG for separate duvets! Best sleeps ever in hotels with them. DH is resistant because he thinks they look naff when bed is made, despite him being the one who is constantly protesting that I am stealing the duvet!

Ponderingwindow · 30/08/2025 03:51

No matter what size bed, separate duvets. Not only does no one accidentally pull the covers, you can get exactly the duvet you want.

I don’t even use a duvet anymore, I switched to a weighted blanket and can’t imagine going back. That definitely doesn’t share well.

This is exactly my situation 🤣 I have no complaints but apparently I am constantly rolling it under me and robbing him of the duvet. Cue lots of huffing and yanking it back from his side.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 30/08/2025 04:56

We have a superking bed with separate duvets…. DH has a single size weighted duvet, me & DS share a king size duvet. The covers don’t match so it does look quite chaotic but sleep in our house can be quite chaotic!

48mumof6 · 30/08/2025 05:03

Separate all the way, we both love snuggling up with our duvets wrapped around us in the winter and I don’t have one in the summer he does so easier to have a double each on a super king

Separate here too.

My husband does the same but we call it the ‘sweaty caterpillar’ which sounds much less appealing than a Swiss roll 😂

When he does it in summer, I wouldn’t want back the soggy bit of duvet I’d managed to reclaim 🤢

We have 2 singles on a double but 2 doubles on a super king would be luxury.

Frikadelle · 30/08/2025 06:05

We have separate mattresses as DH prefers to sleep on the firmest possible mattress. Duvet is shared though, i like to be able to find him easily!

OhNoNotSusan · 30/08/2025 06:08

far easier to buy single or even double covers

MissHollysDolly · 30/08/2025 06:31

2 all the way. The big super king one for me (big, fluffy) and a small light double for my husband. When we make the bed the small one goes under the big one. Bonus - always spare pillow cases as we buy two of the same duvet cover!

clamshell24 · 30/08/2025 06:49

Kingsize on a superking. Niche option.

LeopardPrintLipstick · 30/08/2025 07:33

No to separate from me. We’ve stayed in hotels with two duvets and found it rubbish.
We ended up with a cold gap if we had a cuddle and they kept falling off when we rolled over as they weren’t spread over the whole mattress so the weight ended up hanging off the bed.
Plus bedding is expensive, I wouldn’t want to be forking out for twice as much of it.

Fivews · 30/08/2025 07:42

We have a super king bed and use 2 king sized duvets..... heaven

Dearg · 30/08/2025 07:42

Your body sizes make a difference here - larger people, or one larger of the couple - definitely separate duvets, double bed sized.

Two smaller/ thinner people - one Superking duvet on a Superking mattress is fine.

Two people and a Labrador - nothing works.

NameChangedForThis2025 · 30/08/2025 07:45

@Dearg what about 2 people and a 4 year old? That’s what I’m wondering about separate duvets… I guess we take turns sharing with the wriggly child! Or make him bring his single with him. 3 duvets.

Response is overwhelming so far. But I’m sure I don’t know anyone in real life who does this! Or maybe I’ve just not canvassed my friends sleeping arrangements thoroughly enough.

Duvet divorce- we did it, I like a much higher tog all year round, it was something we always argued about now we are both happy
