To think that surely Rayner has to go.

Blankscreen · 29/08/2025 09:33

Well well well.

So now it emerges that Rayner rearranged her property affairs and declared to HMRC that her new flat in Brighton is her main residence and saved £40k on the SDLT bill as a result.

She has then apparently declared to the local councils the complete opposite.

I'm sure slimeball Kier will defend and say it was perfectly legal blah blah blah.

Not to mention she has a grace and favour house funded by tax payers in London as her constituency office is so far away. Yet she 'lives' in Brighton - surely she could just commute that distance like may others do every day.

Surely she has to go.

Doesn't answer my question as to how MPs from much further away than Greater Manchester manage to represent their constituents

And you have no idea about how 'her constituents' think/feel expect that they probably won't notice if she continues to hold surgeries as before

Oh I know them better than you think. They are majority working class northerners too, and will not appreciate her flitting to a posh pad 'down south'.

You’re missing the point
@TheNuthatch s map was the journey to Brighton !!!! her new home!

Not missed any point - I know how far it is, it has good transport links and other MPs who live much further away manage fine

But she won’t be going from Brighton. She’ll be going from London - where she works.

MPs who live in the Northern Isles don’t then go and buy a house in Cornwall though and declare it as their main home. They have one in or nearer their actual constituency.

Raynor has bought one, her main residence Aparently, in Brighton.

That's the point

FreebieWallopFridge · 29/08/2025 18:15

Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should, and those in public office should stick to the spirit of the law as well as the letter. Something which - in the past - Angela Rayner would not have wasted any time in pointing out, had a Tory MP done what she’s done……

She’s a hypocrite.

Ridiculous comparison

Hove is only about an hour on the train to central London

I have a soft spot for her, limited as she is.

Love this. Apex Mumsnet!

Voted Labour all my life I totally agree.

My poor mother who stood for Labour in an unwinnable seat & was chair of the regional party must be spinning in her grave.

It’s her main residence because it’s the only property she owns. The former marital home now belongs to her ex and the Admiralty House apartment belongs to us.

So you like strawmen arguments made of jelly?

And it's Hove not Brighton

thedramaQueen · 29/08/2025 18:29

It looks terrible what she has done - but I always struggle when certain sections of the Media jump on her but didn't say anything about some of the members of Parliament who have lied and cheated while in office - it seems that Boris Johnson for example, can do no wrong in certain circles, and is even paid by one paper in particular.

Why does it look terrible? She owns one property.

How do you get to be more successful than the Deputy Prime Minister? Other than being the actual Prime Minister? That’s hardly belittling, it’s factual.

Deputy Prime Minister is far from being the second most important position in government. It's an honorific title with no formal responsibility or authority. Clement Attlee was named Deputy PM during WW2 to reflect the Labour Party's participation in the wartime unity government. After that the title was unused until Heseltine in 1995.

Since then it's been convenient for PMs to nominate someone as a deputy for political reasons such as buying off the left wing of the Labour party, or making Nick Clegg feel important. Angela Rayner has influence and responsibility as Minister for Housing, not so much as Deputy PM.

Oh dear. I said Hove. I never mentioned Brighton. The map I posted also has directions from Ashton to Hove.

It's not me with the strawman.

she isn't highly respected for her intelligence, negotiating skills and certainly not for being able to deal with heavy debates or questioning

Actually I think you’ll find she is. I recommend her episode of The Rest is Politics Leading. It’s a real eye opener. The highly intelligent Rory Stewart was blown away by her.

RS also holds Theresa may in very high regard. Educated in history he certainly is. In touch with voters, well not all and lets not forget the the minor gangsters remark

Personally I didn't find it an eye opener. She is certainly improved with her training but under scrutiny (which wasn't the case here) she crumbles. I actually find him often very patronising towards those who are not as privileged as him

The post you gave 100% thumbs up to said Brighton and was a ridiculous strawman argument

FullOfLemons · 29/08/2025 18:40

The majority of people don’t care.

Not even on BBC News website today.

And even if they do, they will probably have forgotten soon enough … in much the same way they have forgotten about Lord Ali buying her frocks and the rest.

She will be PM yet.

bemoresloth · 29/08/2025 18:41

BIossomtoes · 29/08/2025 18:36

No it’s not. She doesn’t even own it any more.

It is according to the DM, they also point out that there is no requirement to own any share of the property for it to be designated as the primary residence

They are having a hard time making it into this massive issue
