To think that surely Rayner has to go.

Well well well.

So now it emerges that Rayner rearranged her property affairs and declared to HMRC that her new flat in Brighton is her main residence and saved £40k on the SDLT bill as a result.

She has then apparently declared to the local councils the complete opposite.

I'm sure slimeball Kier will defend and say it was perfectly legal blah blah blah.

Not to mention she has a grace and favour house funded by tax payers in London as her constituency office is so far away. Yet she 'lives' in Brighton - surely she could just commute that distance like may others do every day.

Surely she has to go.

The post you gave 100% thumbs up to said Brighton and was a ridiculous strawman argument

So 'educate' that poster if you feel the need, rather than quoting me.

When I need your advice on how to post I'll ask you

I'd already 'educated' the poster and was responding to your 100% endorsement

RS also holds Theresa may in very high regard. Educated in history he certainly is. In touch with voters, well not all and lets not forget the the minor gangsters remark

Personally I didn't find it an eye opener. She is certainly improved with her training but under scrutiny (which wasn't the case here) she crumbles. I actually find him often very patronising towards those who are not as privileged as him

The King likes her too. ☺️

@DenizenOfAisleOfShame
I have a soft spot for her, limited as she is.

Love this. Apex Mumsnet!

Um, OK.

MyNameIsX · 29/08/2025 18:55

One wonders whether Rayner will stop there, or crack on adding more properties to her portfolio.

Would be curious to know her leverage - she must have some very accommodating bankers…

bemoresloth · 29/08/2025 18:32

Why does it look terrible? She owns one property.

I'm not saying it is terrible ... but that it looks terrible - you can tell that by the way it's being discussed on this thread and in other Media outlets (yes admittedly ones that are out to get her), that for some, because of her politics - they think it's hypocritical etc

She needs better advice as they're out to get her and will keep going at anything that she does that.

That should be the headline - in fact it shouldn't be a headline - it's not a story - but we all know if you're a left leaning MP anything that can be spun to make them look bad will be, particularly at the moment. Political scandals are either about sex or money. The stereotype is Labour it's always about money, Tories it's always about sex and drugs scandals and we the British public suck this up from the Media every time...

It's not a story and not a terrible look

It doesn't sell papers either

I'm kind of agreeing with you here? Apart from it does kind of sell paper as it's twisted by the Media.

If any Tory had done this there would be nuclear outrage all around.

Done what, buy a flat in Hove?

I can't remember nuclear outrage when Jeremy Hunt bought 7 flats that he forgot to declare

Everyone expects Tories to own property. In fact from what I remember a significant number are landlords, and have mates who are landlords. Hence, the push to get workers back to the office and not wfh because of the commercial landlords that were supporting the Tory party before the last election.. that was never really investigated by any journalist but I bet it would have been had it been a left leaning government. Or if was investigated we didn’t hear much about it.

Odd. As I recall, the biggest landlord in the commons is a Labour MP. Who was exposed as a slum landlord!

Gotta love Labour.

Yes thats true. Jas Athwal owns 15 properties. The second biggest landlord is Jeremy Hunt with 9 properties.
44 Labour MPs are landlords, 28 on the tory benches.

Maybe because the tories don't claim to be anything different, unlike Rayner.

Rayner bought a flat, she is not doing anything different to many other people

Have you never bought a house?

MyNameIsX · 29/08/2025 20:45

Angela Rayner is facing an ethics investigation over whether she paid the correct tax on her various homes.

The Deputy Prime Minister admitted on Friday night that she removed her name from the deeds of her family house before buying a seaside flat 250 miles away that saved her £40,000 in stamp duty.

At the same time, Ms Rayner, who is also Housing Secretary, insisted her old home in Greater Manchester remained her main residence. In doing so, she has been able to avoid paying £2,000 in council tax on a third property, a grace and favour apartment in central London.

On Friday night, the Tories referred Ms Rayner to Sir Laurie Magnus, the Prime Minister’s independent adviser on ministers’ interests, saying her behaviour had been “unethical”. They accused her of “hypocritical tax avoidance by a minister who supports higher taxes on family homes, high-value homes and second homes”.

Sir Laurie will decide in the coming days whether to launch an investigation.

Ridiculous comparison

Hove is only about an hour on the train to central London

I used the Northern Isles as a comparison because you did.

Cornwall , Brighton whatever. They’re both seaside towns
