As my mum would wisely say, have more gumption. Be more positive. Take lessons, don't worry about making mistakes. Use constructive suggestions and criticism well, and don't take such sensitive offence at any feedback.

Nobody knows everything. People start at the bottom, and work hard to improve. Even after years of practice, people who have natural talent will need to keep practising and refining skills.

I had a lovely friend as a child who was a brilliant violinist, went to the Purcell School ot Music and the Royal Academy of Music. She loved it, but she told me there were people who were much better than her - which astounded me, as she was so good. But she was literally practising every day, and it was a reflection on her dedication that made her successful.

Strawberriesandpears · 28/08/2025 21:07

I like them! Especially the bus stop one. You have a good eye for interesting / unusual subject matter.

MaggieBsBoat · 28/08/2025 21:10

OP is only replying to negative posts, which is irritating for people who are being constructive.
I am assuming at this point that OP is either very young or has some issues going on. This kind of reaction is neither mature or of sound mind.

This is a shame and people shouldn’t waste more energy on it.

Cailleachnamara · 28/08/2025 21:15

I don't mean this unkindly OP but I don't think you have a great eye for taking a good photograph. This is something that can be learned to an extent but a bit like the ability to draw there has to be some inherent talent there.

However if you enjoy photography keep it up, you don't have to please anyone but yourself with your photos but the question you asked was if you could make it as a photographer and from what you've shown us here, my answer is probably not, or at least not without a great deal more practise and study of photography.

I don't have any qualifications in photography but I do take a lot of landscape shots and make a few thousand pounds a year selling calendars and postcards as a sort of hobby that earns me a little.

oneleggedspider · 28/08/2025 21:16

You sound young. The photos are nice, but you can't seem to take constructive criticism, or a sensible approach to practising your art and furthering your skills. This will hold you back in any creative industry, so try and work on your confidence and perseverance issues first.

Because life is too short to waste time being shit at something, if you have a talent it’ll shine through no matter what. The fact I thought they were good photos says a lot about my lack of talent

In fairness though, when you were born, presumably you couldn't even hold up your own head, let alone point a camera. Or for that matter, feed yourself, walk, speak, put on shoes, post on mumsnet, any number of things that you were initially shit at... but you learned to do them anyway.

Give yourself the chance to learn about photography, there's more to it than you thought.

I like the bus stop one!

Same here. It's unique within itself.

oneleggedspider · 28/08/2025 21:21

The bus stop one is great. People talking about the rule of thirds and not getting posts in the way have missed the point. The bus stop is the main subject matter.

They have a slight wes anderson thing going on, they work well as a series. I feel like you'd be suited to 'fine art photography' rather than functional commercial photography. Look up some courses.

Cailleachnamara · 28/08/2025 21:21

user1476613140 · 28/08/2025 21:00

Some posters really just lack tact and think because it's a forum they can just post hurtful stuff because they're safely behind a screen - WRONG. They're just showing themselves up for being 🔔 ends.

The OP asked for an opinion and the majority opinion is that these are not very good photos. Would it be better to give them false hope? Photography is a very competitive market and to succeed you need to be really good. Better to be honest than set someone up for failure.

The world currently has this ridiculous mantra that anyone can be anything they want. This is just not true and sometimes a reality check is needed.

Jewelanemone · 28/08/2025 21:22

Deeply ordinary photos. Choose better subjects, follow the rule of thirds, watch your vertical lines.

Look for patterns, contrasts and stories.

Notashamed13 · 28/08/2025 21:22

Some nice pictures but definitely room for improvement (subject, scale, focus etc.) You asked for constructive criticism - join a club and learn.

Is that you Brooklyn?

🤣🤣🤣

TiggyTomCat · 28/08/2025 21:24

Listen it doesn't mattter what people think if you enjoy it - join a local group - there will be lots like you - keen and want to learn and get better! Embrace it!

Sunshineismyfavourite · 28/08/2025 21:29

They are nice photos OP and if you love it then absolutely do not stop!

The thing with all forms of art, there is lots to learn. Take a class, read some books and study; things like proportion, scale, lighting, framing etc. It is not that you are shit at taking photos but you have not necessarily learnt the skills. It's the same as picking up a paintbrush - you're not going to become an expert portrait artist unless you study.

Don't listen to negativity though - if it's a passion then pursue it!

You are so wrong.

Talent shines through with the polishing lots of practice and dedication gives it.

Itiswhysofew · 28/08/2025 21:33

I'm loving the bus stop. It has a nostalgic feel. I wondered if yoid used a real camera. I like the colours.

Don't throw in the towel yet. You are good. Give yourself a chance. My friend took a photography class and learnt a lot. She takes photos because she enjoys it. Do it for that reason.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 28/08/2025 21:37

WannabePhotographer · 28/08/2025 20:55

Because people saying things to be nice are just doing it to be kind

Why are the people saying positive things less credible than the people saying negative things to you?

This is art, OP. It's not maths. People like what they like. You could do the most beautiful seascape photo ever and have someone on here say it's average or terrible because they actually like photos of urban decline, but you wouldn't know that if they don't mention it.

There are pages and pages of internet critique devoted to criticising Emmy winners and Oscar winners and Turner Prize winners and Bafta winners.

To be an artist is often to have as many people hating your work as loving it.

CommonAsMucklowe · 28/08/2025 21:37

Well you ignored the rule of thirds and I would have thought that was something at beginners level and you did photography at A Level? And the focus is awful, my phone has better. Sorry to be blunt.

WannabePhotographer · 28/08/2025 21:38

tentums · 28/08/2025 21:07

When you say you studied it at A level do you mean you completed the course and took the exam and got a good grade? If so, you have a strong foundation to build on. A level is not Mickey Mouse. So, there's no harm in doing some classes to hone your skills - a day course, night class, even a photography holiday.
Don't give up after a few critical comments if it's something you love. It's hard to see our own work objectively. I used to think I could draw but eventually realised I was above average but not brilliant. I still draw.

I got a high B

Why post for opinions if you just wanted everyone to say the photos are amazing, breathtaking, international photography award winning offerings?
You're reluctant to embarass yourself at a photography class but quite happy to throw a full on tantrum on here.

Bobnobob · 28/08/2025 21:40

OP photographers are just suddenly good at photography by pointing and clicking a fancy camera. They read advice online, join groups, take classes etc. If you are going to drop every hobby you aren’t instantly amazing at then you’ll be going through a lot of them. You get out what you put in.

And what about using the settings? What did you shoot the attached photos or was it on auto?

Auto

I didn’t say I wanted that.

To be honest I wasn’t expecting over a hundred comments saying they’re awful! I thought they were okay - not breathtaking, but not “shot on a potato” (the camera cost me nearly £1,000!), not “lacking everything”

if you’re being serious then I would keep practising. If you enjoy it that’s the only thing that matters.
