Talent definitely does not shine through at the beginning. Like a PP I know someone very successful in their field which is singing.
I've been to every performance of theirs. They were bang average for a lot of years. Specialist training and again , very middling in their cohort then suddenly, a professional job and all the support that comes with that and now they are flying. Its work ethic and perseverance

Was it a poor quality camera? my husband is a photograph and asked “were they taken with a potato” they aren’t remotely in focus. The angles and proportions are really off and the lighting isn’t great.

Thanks, thanks a lot

To be good at something you need a basic aptitude, a passion for it and TEN THOUSAND hours of practice. How old are you that you just instantly give up ?

Clearly I don’t even have a basic aptitude for it

Why are you ignoring all the positive responses and only focusing on the negative/constructive criticism ones?

Because people saying things to be nice are just doing it to be kind

You must not be discouraged ... you become good at anything with practice and experience. Carry on taking pics and hone your style. You will look back on these early pics and see how much you have progressed which will be very satisfying.

Kit lens

And what about using the settings? What did you shoot the attached photos or was it on auto?

You did A level photography. What grade did you get ?

I’m beginning to think this is a joke thread. No adult is this ridiculous.

Edited

I have posted comments like this on threads in the past and they got "reported".

I love the one of the row of houses and I'd stick it on my wall in a frame.

GrannyGoggles · 28/08/2025 21:00

Is that you Brooklyn?

Some posters really just lack tact and think because it's a forum they can just post hurtful stuff because they're safely behind a screen - WRONG. They're just showing themselves up for being 🔔 ends.

Havesomecommonsense · 28/08/2025 21:00

Op there are whole coffee table books/insta accounts full of this style of photography, don't be downhearted. I like this style

LeaAndDer · 28/08/2025 21:02

Remember the rule of three.
Frame frame frame (your subject)
Think outside the box

Because life is too short to waste time being shit at something, if you have a talent it’ll shine through no matter what. The fact I thought they were good photos says a lot about my lack of talent

Talent can be learned. No one came into the world holding a camera and an award.

Lonelycrab · 28/08/2025 21:02

Hmmm.

Op has received a lot of advice and constructive criticism, yet isn’t really giving anything back apart from one big pity party. Not sure I see the point of this thread.

WannabePhotographer · 28/08/2025 19:10

There’s a grain effect on them and they’re not sharpened, it’s supposed to give a vintage feel. But I take on board the criticism and I’ll give this one a miss

Ah, I take it back then because the effect works very well!

Ellaone · 28/08/2025 21:03

Is this Tenby?

Hfstjsufysyfykdhoxg · 28/08/2025 21:03

Echoing others, these are poor I'm afraid, OP. Weak composition, uninspiring subjects (the bus stop one is just bizarre) and technically inaccurate - this isn't a 'hazy feel', it's out of focus.

I do think that is it's something you enjoy, you should practise though. Nobody is good at something immediately.

Havesomecommonsense · 28/08/2025 21:04

I like the bus stop one!

Flinderskleepers · 28/08/2025 21:04

I used to date a photographer that took pics like these. He's now just had his third book published.

I really like them. Couple of them need a little bit of improvement perhaps but you've got a good eye for spotting 'interesting' things like pops of colour or something quotidian against a natural backdrop.

WannabePhotographer · 28/08/2025 20:55

Oh for heaven’s sake! Get a grip and stop wallowing in self pity. Are you not aware that many successful people had to shed blood, sweat and tears to get to the stage they were successful.

tentums · 28/08/2025 21:07

When you say you studied it at A level do you mean you completed the course and took the exam and got a good grade? If so, you have a strong foundation to build on. A level is not Mickey Mouse. So, there's no harm in doing some classes to hone your skills - a day course, night class, even a photography holiday.
Don't give up after a few critical comments if it's something you love. It's hard to see our own work objectively. I used to think I could draw but eventually realised I was above average but not brilliant. I still draw.

JudeyJudey · 28/08/2025 21:07

OP is there other stuff going on for you at the moment?
