Well, I actually really liked them. They were interesting and the blues and whites in the images made me think of holidays and summer. All photos look the same these days due to advice like ‘the rule of thirds’, so I appreciated the composition of your photos. And yes, the vintage effect you used gave them a wonderful nostalgic feel.

How lovely that people were reminded of their childhood summers? Isn’t that what art is supposed to do?

I’d keep the camera op.

BellissimoGecko · 28/08/2025 19:15

Come on, OP, don’t be downhearted! Read some photography books, join a club, take lessons.

i like the yellow house shot best.

isitaline97 · 28/08/2025 19:16

I like them! You have incorporated rule of thirds IMO. Practice practice practice if this is something you would like to do then there’s no reason why you can’t! Would you consider portraits (people & pets, babies etc) as I think this is where much of the market is. Also there’s are loads of photography groups on Facebook where you can post your work and ask for CC. Good Luck OP. Also bear in mind photograph is an art and art is subjective, some people may love them some may not! Do you use any sort of editing software?

Complet · 28/08/2025 19:17

Do you need a hobby to be a source in income? If so, then photography probably isn’t a goer unless you’re prepared to invest in classes, a lot of time and proper equipment. If it’s just for pleasure, then why are you giving up so soon? You don’t become a grade 8 pianist after a couple of lessons, and most people don’t take it up in order to become a concert pianist!

Can’t you just do it for your own pleasure? Or is it something you want other people to appreciate and validate in terms of putting on exhibitions etc.?

Seawolves · 28/08/2025 19:17

I love photography but for every good photo I take another one hundred end up in the recycle bin. If you genuinely enjoy it, read up on it, watch tutorials, join a camera club and just keep taking photos. You can't expect to pick up a camera and be great straight away, you need to learn and practise.

I’m not going to pursue something I’m crap at, so I’ll just sell the camera. It was a short lived dream

Practice and learning is how you become good at something it doesn't just happen on its own. Take pictures because you enjoy it, the skill will come later.

Mercurial123 · 28/08/2025 19:25

They look like the average photo myself and friends and family take. Maybe join a photography club to improve?

Because life is too short to waste time being shit at something, if you have a talent it’ll shine through no matter what. The fact I thought they were good photos says a lot about my lack of talent

How does someone going from taking some nice pictures to being a photographer? I'd imagine it's one of those jobs that's going to be extremely difficult to get into or get anywhere with. I mean would you be a wedding photographer, take school pictures, be a photographer for a news paper? There are so many people out there selling their photos online on places like Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, and Getty Images that I think it must be very difficult to get into.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't carry on though OP, I love photography too - but I do it just for fun. Go to some beautiful places and take pics for your enjoyment. It's a really, really lovely hobby to have.

Mercurial123 · 28/08/2025 19:28

It's a bit weird you want to give up. Surely if you love something you WANT to improve.

That’s really not how learning works at all. There’s no “talent/ no talent” thing: any skill is about trying, learning from your mistakes, listening to feedback, trying again. Please don’t be disheartened.

But if you’re shit, you’ll stay shit - I thought they were good photos when they’re categorically awful, which means I don’t have a talent

Fairly pleasant, but very average sorry @WannabePhotographer I wouldn't give up your day job.

I don't think they're crap, but you would benefit from more practice and maybe joining a club as previously suggested to learn from others. You clearly enjoy it so why not pursue it as a hobby?

I’m not going to join a club just to be embarrassed in front of people

Nice pics. Not technically good, but they have a ‘snaps from the 1970s vibe’.

Pianoaholic · 28/08/2025 19:34

They're not awful at all, I was trying to be honest in my earlier reply.
Sometimes more contrasting perspectives make a good photo. Having something close in the foreground against a distant view for example (sorry, that probably doesn't read well ...maybe you get what I mean)

Thingyfanding · 28/08/2025 19:35

@WannabePhotographer photography is an art form and art is subjective. I would go on a course if you enjoy it. I wouldn’t ask randoms on mumsnet. Go forth and embrace your new found passion!

BatchCookBabe · 28/08/2025 19:36

SoftPillow · 28/08/2025 19:14

I like the vintage feel, there is also a nice stillness to them and I like the colours.

If you enjoy it there’s no need to be dramatic and sell the camera based on some random internet comments. I would suggest that you continue to take pictures that you enjoy and don’t worry about what anyone else thinks. Your style will change as your skills develop. Perhaps take a course and meet other people who share your passion. Enjoy yourself

Yeah, I found this dramatic reaction odd too. ^

Throwing the camera out/selling it because of a few not-so-positive comments on social meeja! From randoms on the internet! Just carry on OP, but don't expect to make a career out of it. Even the best of the best struggle to make a career out of photography.

LemonTwix · 28/08/2025 19:36

You’re giving up way too easily! I was really pleased with one of the first paintings I ever did. Got it framed and everything. Looking back, it really wasn’t good and I would have got panned on Mumsnet. I went on to study painting, got a first class degree, MA, became an artist, sold a lot of work… It took time. Talent doesn’t necessarily always shine out from the beginning, it takes perseverance and study. Do a class in it and see how you get on.

IMissSparkling · 28/08/2025 19:37

Why did you take a photo of a bus stop? Gran is that you?!

Fair enough, but you obviously don't want to improve or learn techniques. It takes time and patience to be good at anything. If you join a group you will get advice and support. You've given up before really trying.

DinaofCloud9 · 28/08/2025 19:38

The photos are a lot better than your attitude. What a negative nelly. Come on op stop being such a quitter.
