Of course it would be embarrassing to walk into a group of people I don’t know and present a load of photos that are awful. I’ve always thought I was at least decent

You don't have to. Lots of sites have photography challenges that you can submit photo's too under an avatar.

They're not awful, OP! They're just not, like, Times Photo of the Year. That doesn't mean they're awful!

Plenty of people have said as much

Good clubs welcome beginners and help them. Nobody will laugh at you.

You are acting pretty entitled, to be honest. If you can't handle people saying your aren't wonderful, you are not actually going to learn anything. Photography like most things is something you have to properly work at if you want to be good at it.

I mean, I would hope during an a-level photography class you would learn to at least keep your horizons straight.

That’s your pride, or more to the point, your ego. No one at a class or course is going to be judging anyone; they’re there to learn, not be flattered or scrutinise others.

Honestly you need to lighten up!

Henbags · 28/08/2025 20:36

I’m beginning to think this is a joke thread. No adult is this ridiculous.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 28/08/2025 20:36

Lovely, reminds me of 70s childhood snaps we still have in a big box in my mums wardrobe 🥰

PaddlingSwan · 28/08/2025 20:38

Very average.

QuaverQuanta · 28/08/2025 20:38

What camera are you using? You've said Fujifilm - what model? That answer will determine my advice 😊

Take no notice. This is a good test of whether or not you have what it takes. You will face criticism your whole career so get used to it. You took a risk posting to this forum -good for you. You have a lot to learn but your photos are a darn sight better than Brooklyn Beckham’s. And he ended up with a book deal.

There’s a grain effect on them and they’re not sharpened, it’s supposed to give a vintage feel. But I take on board the criticism and I’ll give this one a miss

Presumably this is a fairly new pursuit, with equipment you’ve not had ages? I teach art and these show some promise in terms of coherence and theme, that’s good. But no one is going to take professional quality photographs without investing time and energy in improving their work. The best thing you can do is use various online tutorials, read about your subject, join a club, take some classes and keep getting better achieving small goals on the way to whatever large me vision you have.

lotsofpatience · 28/08/2025 20:43

Op, I sincerely hope you are having a wind up with your ridiculous posts. Otherwise, you have bigger fish to fry than your wannabe photos.

AshFlintcombe · 28/08/2025 20:44

First of all, well done for being brave enough to put your photos on here and ask for comments. There are plenty of really helpful and constructive suggestions.

Have a look at the online course “ A Year with my Camera” - I did it a few years ago and thought it was really good. I think it’s still free ( you can buy a workbook or pay a small fee to access the app)
The website has some interesting ideas for projects and how to get the best from your camera.

DappledThings · 28/08/2025 20:46

Nobody said they were "awful" or "shit". You've made that up. You sound like you wanted an excuse to give up.

Istilldontlikeolives · 28/08/2025 20:46

Why are you ignoring all the positive responses and only focusing on the negative/constructive criticism ones?

Purely down to nepotism. His other "career" was a model.

Mischance · 28/08/2025 20:47

I am a retired photographer. Well done for getting stuck in. Here are some constructive ideas....
Pics one and 3 .... cluttered foregrounds with things that are not very photogenic or appealing and distract from the lovely shining sea.
Pic 2 .... lovely colourful houses. Might have been good to concentrate on them and ditch the plain houses on the right. If you had moved to your left and taken the pic more side on it would give the effect of the coloured houses being closer together... almost an abstract tall verticals effect.
Pic 4 is more interesting ... the mundane bus stop juxtaposed with the sublime blue sea. Next time maybe move around and try different angles and see what effects you can get.
Pic 5 ... the V shaped framing is a good idea but probably too much bush. The straight sea wall parallel with the horizon is interesting as an idea. Which were you trying to focus on ... the foreground or the background? You need to decide.

These comments are intended to give constructive food for thought. We all learn by doing and using these pointers might give you the chance to try some other ideas.
The first rule I learned was to "take a photo of what you what you want to take a photo of"! ... sounds crazy, but it does make you think critically about what really needs to be in the photo and what can go.
Good luck ... keep the enthusiasm and experiment and above all else you must enjoy it. You will see yourself progress and that is very satisfying.

Because life is too short to waste time being shit at something, if you have a talent it’ll shine through no matter what. The fact I thought they were good photos says a lot about my lack of talent

To be good at something you need a basic aptitude, a passion for it and TEN THOUSAND hours of practice. How old are you that you just instantly give up ?

The composure of your shots are all wrong as is the use of natural lighting. Enjoy your hobby but you don’t have a natural eye for this. Sorry.

Don't hold back 😬

What lens(es) do you have andhow comfortable/confident sre you with coming off of full auto and setting your own aperture/shutter speed/iso?

I like them!
Keep going!

Jeska7 · 28/08/2025 20:52

A few comments on here and you seem to want to give up. If you enjoy it, get a new camera or second hand camera, go on a course and enjoy it.

Russiandollsaresofullofthemselves · 28/08/2025 20:52

Was it a poor quality camera? my husband is a photograph and asked “were they taken with a potato” they aren’t remotely in focus. The angles and proportions are really off and the lighting isn’t great.

Lonelycrab · 28/08/2025 20:53

Fuji xt30 is very high quality.
