Is anyone better off since Labour

1000 replies

Luckymum20 · 26/08/2025 20:26

I am not just talking financially but feeling optimistic about the future for children, old age.

With the £22 billion debt now pasing £50 billion.

The increase in Council tax (that they said the wouldn't do). OAPs raid on pensions and no Winter fuel relief. Changes to finance regarding care homes. Utilities up. TV licence up. Food costs up...

I know minimum wage has increased but all costs have increased by a greater amount!

In 2021 minimum wage was almost 30% lower than it is now...

So I ask. Is anyone actually feeling better off, optimistic and pleased with this Government.

Also the October budget of likely to bring more stains on the 'average working man"

YABU - change will happen. It a good thing.

YANBU - not good

Yes was it David Cameron who proudly boasted about one of his children being in the state system. He would be there nodding along when talking to concerned parent about the difficulties their children's state school were dealing with. It turned out his child was at the most exclusive state primary school in the country where only millionaires could get anywhere near!

And if all private schools were to close, the house prices round the best state schools would be even higher.

It’s not a question of whether we find it ‘acceptable to hit the most vulnerable in society’. We can have all the empathy in the world, but that doesn’t pay the bills.

You haven’t answered my questions. If we want a functional welfare state, how is all this to be paid for? More are now recipients than contributors. It’s an unsustainable situation.

Basic rate income tax was over 30% here when I started work in the 1960s.

That’s right, the basic rate of income tax hasn’t been lower than it is now for the past 50 years. And employee NICs have dropped. And yet people feel taxed to the hilt. Basic rate taxpayers aren’t. It’s just that all other costs (food, utilities, mortgage/rent, council tax) have and so people feel taxed highly.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 27/08/2025 11:41

Personally we are no worse off then a year ago financially

Apart from rising food prices, energy costs, prices of stuff in shops and council tax I presume?

Brexit is blamed because GDP has shrunk since the UK left the EU. Every single economic source agrees on this.

Yes I agree with that, although there has been unexpected better than forecast growth in our exports of services.

But comparing the UK to France currently our total gdp remains higher.

Yeah I know, being a socialist means stealing from people you scam into believing that you will make their lives better and digging your snout deeper into the trough to stuff yourself as much as you can.

Ironically, this is what the likes of Trump and Farage do blatantly.

Edit: This has already been said multiple times on the thread, feel free to ignore.

mrshoho · 27/08/2025 11:02

Which raises the question of why Brexit is blamed for every single issue. France is the co leader along with Germany of the EU yet appear to be in an even weaker position than the UK with ever increasing debt. The EU came down hard in Greece for example but now find it impossible to curb France.

You forget both countries outshine us in services across the board - the very things people are annoyed with Labour not providing after years of Brexit and austerity here. They have better systems that work. I'd rather that than this prolonged agony of shitness and racing to the bottom. I don't even drink my tap water any more!

Oh I agree definitely when it comes to national health services. I'm envious and find it hard to see how our NHS is going to succeed. Although I do believe Wes Streeting and the Labour Party are putting more effort in. What I'm getting at is I hear oh it's because of brexit for every problem we experience. I just don't believe problems like the NHS wouldn't still be the same if we were still in the EU.

If you don’t have any answers or solutions to the problems we’re facing, it’s not really helpful to try and shame people who would like to keep a welfare state working for those most in need of it, but recognise it needs desperate reform, and that the money needs to come from somewhere. Otherwise the whole system will collapse.

“Why do you think it is acceptable to hit the most vulnerable in society” - this isn’t an argument. People don’t want to hit the most vulnerable in society, can’t you see that? We need to be able to discuss the problems and make cuts wherever possible to prevent those most in need from suffering. No one can make the needed changes because their motives are constantly impugned - they’re accused of not caring, wanting vulnerable people to suffer, hating disabled people - no! It’s because we want it to work for those people, and it can’t when the system is so close to collapse. We need realistically at what we can actually afford.

The problems with the NHS are down to 14 years of mismanagement. There was 70% patient satisfaction in 2010.

I left the country and am better off.

HMRC asked me to please return as they now have a massive loss in funding 😂

Obvious BS

the claim of all the millionaires leaving has been debunked

mrshoho · 27/08/2025 12:19

Exactly, so whether in the EU or out our NHS has been mismanaged and underfunded. So when people quite rightly complain about unacceptable waiting lists and terrible treatment I wish others wouldn't say well it's because of brexit. And when people are shocked at the large numbers receiving sickness benefits how much is down to people either stuck on waiting lists or left disabled by inadequate and substandard care? The UK scores low on productivity but how much is that down to the poor NHS care?

Timeforabitofpeace · 27/08/2025 12:19

I have my criticism of Labour at the moment, but no ordinary person would be better off under any government, because of economic and political factors outside the control of government. Personally, I believe that if Reform got in, people would be gaslighted that they were better off, whilst the ultra rich coined it in, and curtailed the freedoms our grandparents have fought for, rather like Trump is doing.

It doesn't bare thinking of. That is why Labour must tackle the asylum and immigration issues. It's got to the point where cross party action should be sought now. If all parties united and work together they could make Reform irrelevant. People say Labour shouldn't entertain the immigration questions but that is unrealistic.

At the end of the day
Whatever government gets in next ,is going to cut the benefits anyway.
So don't worry, they will soon be much less

But if the British workforce filled those roles - what would be the problem? That would be a societal good, no? We don’t have enough low-skilled jobs for both British people and immigrants.

There wouldn’t be a problem but the fact is those jobs are not filled by British people, either through willingness or skill. There are acute shortages in health and social care and in construction, we can’t just send everyone back and wait for British people to want and learn to do the jobs.

I'm an immigrant (legal and have paid £££££ in tax into your coffers, so please don't get the pitchforks out) and our family is off for good in five weeks' time. Won't be back. Can't wait.

Yes it has. It’s misinformation released by Henley & Associates whose chairman is known as the Passport King because they specialise in acquiring passports for their wealthy international clients. They are at the bottom of a great deal of Malta’s corruption.

SadTimesInFife · 27/08/2025 12:48

Benefit fraud. We all agree that has to stop.
Able bodied feckless youth; people off on "stress" for ever; etc etc.
I've met them. Congenital bludgers and parasites rorting the system. Mummy gets a motability car as her son "trips a bit" ( she calls it cerebral palsy ffs)- she doesnt want a free flat in SW3 because she wants a free flat in Notting Hill like her sister. Never worked a day in her life.
Women breeding but don't have the mental ability to look after the child ...and that's ok...because it's ok for the tax payer to shell out yet again for irresponsible behaviour.

"Poverty" but plenty of cash for fags, booze, fake tan, nails, and a smart phone.
Nah.
The west is so flabby and self indulgent. 🙄

She chose to do it.
Shame she hasn't got any decent plan or the guts to stop waste
