Territorial dispute in swimming pool

I am lucky enough to have a proper lunch break and at least three times a week I go to a nearby hotel and swim a mile, sometimes 2km.

Today I was alone in the pool and started swimming in lane two (of four) which is one lane away from the side closest to the changing rooms entrance. About 30 min later a man got in and stated to swim in lane 1. Five minutes after that he changed into my lane. I caught up with him at the far end and when he turned he looked at me swimming toward him and seemed surprised (surprised I hadn't moved lanes?). He then kicked off the wall and swam beneath me and under the lane divider into lane three. Not long after I finished up and went to get changed. Before exiting I looked back and sure enough he had moved back into lane two, which I presume is "his". And based on that I believe that he was trying to claim lane 2 when he initially moved in.

He is another regular I have seen him coming as I am going although we don't usually use the pool at the same time.

I think this is knobish behaviour

But do we know is if it was a club swim - it doesn’t sound like it was to me but who knows. Assuming it was then maybe that’s different, although were that the case, do you not think OP would have felt more comfortable with it?

Even if that is what you do in swimming drill, it doesn’t mean it’s appropriate in an open swim session. It doesn’t sit right with me to tell someone who feels uncomfortable when someone has invaded their personal space that it’s their problem tbh

I didn't say it was a club swim, I said it's not abnormal to do this, especially if you've previously swam in a club.

it's the moving back into lane 2 as soon as I got out though, I get not wanting to swim next to a wall or ladders but lane 3 is also open on both sides so why not continue there after I got out? my conclusion is that he lane 2 is his fave and he made a passive aggressive play for it right from the off.

I could be wrong but I like to work out how peoples minds work

OP you are wasting your time, chewing over what was going on in his mind !!

he may have been :
thinking about dinner, work, holiday, how fast he is swimming, whatever !!!

you will never be able to read minds, so stop stressing over what he may have been thinking and move on !!

#mindreadingisacognitivedistortion !

Here we have todays 'reasons to hate men' thread.

With a lunch break at 5am. 😂

You’re right, he had three to choose from without straying into hers.

It's not 'hers'.

PrivateMusic · 26/08/2025 10:09

So many male apologists in here 🤢

GleisZwei · 26/08/2025 10:09

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 26/08/2025 10:05

Yes, Einstein, that's why normal behaviour would be to choose an unoccupied lane if there is one available. In this case there were three.

Again, have you ignored all the other explanations as to why he might have ended up in there.

TottyMaude · 26/08/2025 10:10

Blokes gonna bloke. No where is safe from them

Nope, just people who don't jump to conclusions based on anecdotes. HTH.

She doesn't own the pool or the lane ,she also didn't want him to use " her" lane after she got out ,someone's entitled here...

Because they're absolutely risible

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 26/08/2025 10:12

It makes it already occupied.

And?
I don't get to exclude other users from a lane just because I'm already in it (unless it's a max capacity already).
Perhaps female only sessions would suit those who cannot bear to be remotely near or share with any males.

No, she mentioned that he moved back to lane 2 after she got out because it is an indicator that he specifically wanted lane 2. (Rather than that he accidentally chose the only occupied lane because he didn't have his glasses on and only realised when he was forced to swim under the OP.)

According to you. 🫣

No, but there is also no good reason to choose an occupied lane when there are three free lanes available.

And? Maybe he likes it for the same reason she does? Some lanes are better than others, or so it seems.

Because she made thst up her head that was why he was doing it.

Bennetty · 26/08/2025 10:15

It's hard to know what really happened here. Either he was trying to push you out of his favorite lane or he's just not that great a swimmer and has trouble staying in his own lane.

Either way, he let it go and moved on fairly quickly, so now you can too.

GleisZwei · 26/08/2025 10:15

Who cares why he likes it? He clearly got in it hoping to make the OP annoyed/uncomfortable enough to move out of "his" lane.

x2boys · 26/08/2025 10:15

It's the most likely explanation.

I've been at our local pool where me and the 1 other person end up in the same lane, we manage fine. Shock, horror, it's often a male. 🫣

Blueuggboots · 26/08/2025 06:59

But he moved?

But she was clearly alone in the pool so the man did not need to even go in her lane. If more people arrived, fair game but she was alone!
