MIL bathing habits

Bitesize89 · 25/08/2025 06:56

My in laws come to stay with us pretty frequently and I've noticed over time that mil never bathes when she comes. She can be here 3-4 days without a shower or bath. It recently was revealed that she only ever uses baths and no soap in her bath. This came up after she bagged my DD and didn't use any soap on her and she said well there was bubble bath in the water, I was shocked as I don't think that's a proper way to bathe and she said when she bathes she doesn't use soap and only bubble bath. So not only does she not bathe for days on and but when she bathes she just has a bubble bath and no soap.im really grossed out.

I’m a bit shocked at the number of people who think shower gel and bubble bath are the same as soap.

Me too.

I think posters who think those that wash regularly "think they smell so bad they feel the need to" are kind of proving the point that not washing regularly means you do smell. We aren't washing because we stink, we're washing daily to prevent the build up of a stink occuring, not washing when we start to smell.

But people who wash every other day are also doing this, as are the people
who shower twice a day.

They’ve made a judgement about what their own body needs.

missrabbit1990 · 25/08/2025 16:32

Some older people prefer to do flannel washes. Mind your own business OP.

Of course everyone can make their own judgements but don't claim not to smell. Throughout history when people couldn't wash daily because they didn't have the facilities they knew they smelled, it's why we invented perfume. Now we know what causes the smells and mostly everyone has access to the facilities needed.

OonaStubbs · 25/08/2025 16:34

Showering is overrated. You can't beat a good flannel wash. It's far more environmentally friendly as well.

I can explain it to you, but I can’t understand it for you.

TicklishMintDuck · 25/08/2025 16:41

5128gap · 25/08/2025 12:08

Why? Because in your opinion not doing so makes you not nice for others to be around because of your smell? How is this different for a person who CAN'T shower every day? The reasons for not showering don't dictate the smell. So it follows that all people who can't shower every day smell, in your opinion. That's not going to be great for a disabled person who can't shower every day to hear, and as it's not actually based in anything factual, it can perpetuate false stereotypes about disabled people.

Exactly! This time last year I couldn’t take a full shower for four months because I had post surgical wounds and dressings that had to stay dry. I had to wash everything separately. When I was finally able to shower it felt amazing! 🤩

Ketzele · 25/08/2025 16:43

Can we please stop calling people gross? It's so school playground and unpleasant.

This whole thread is in bad taste.

You don't seem to understand or want to respond to my point which is that people's personal threshold for cleanliness often bothers other people unless you're a recluse, and that I was talking about the social benefit to yourself and others of being clean and fresh

In the same way you don’t put neat washing up liquid on every item you wash, bubble bath washes you. I can’t use it due to eczema so use dove soap (which technically isn’t classed as a soap). Also wash every 2-3 days. I’m not a sweaty person at all and have very dry skin so bathing too much makes my eczema really sore. The obsession with daily showers is a more recent thing. I don’t remember the 1980s being stinky and back then we bathed twice a week and I shared with my sibling. Friends all did the same and our class wasn’t stinky except Zack - not sure he bathed ever.

I think we used to bath every day even then. I definitely remember strip washing as well.

we had a bath shower in 1 bathroom that was my dps ensuite and eventually df put shower over bath in other bathroom as he got fed up with me wanting to use ensuite

Carry on destroying all the good bacteria (yes, there are such things) that live on your skin.

My skin is just fine thanks! Soft and clear, as well as clean. Just how it should be!

But who decides ‘clean and fresh’

Freshly showered but yesterday’s t-shirt?
Showered that morning?
Showered yesterday morning?
Have not had a shower before an evening out?

You’ve just drawn an arbitrary line in the sand around one factor in hygiene and declared everyone the other side of it anti-social and gross.

There was a massive water saving campaign in Kent in the 1980s so anyone bathing daily would have been seen as very wasteful. Every summer we had hosepipe bans etc and campaigns to use water carefully. People don’t seem to worry about the environment in that way anymore, which I find odd.

lol How on earth can a flannel wash be better than a shower?? And frankly I would rather sacrifice the environment then have everyone walking around without showers

Without daily showers …

and this is why we’re all doomed.

If strip washing you would have to use numerous flannels and several basins of clean, warm water to even get close to how clean a shower gets you. Then you have to factor in the consrant laundry of all those flannels at a high temperature, of course.

Not sure all of that is any more environmentally friendly than an average shower?

Or, are people deluding themselves that just the one flannel and just the one basin of warm water actually gets them even remotely clean? Because all your actually doing is re-distributing some of your dead skin cells, sebum, bacteria and loose body hair around your body, and rinsing your flannel out in water that contains the rest of your dead skin cells, sebum, bacteria and loose body hair.

It's a nightmarish cycle of general grubbiness.

Denim4ever · 25/08/2025 17:27

Someone2025 · 25/08/2025 13:08

Drying with a towel after removed most of those, anyway showers are usually a lot quicker which a lot of the time isn’t long enough to effectively remove all dead skin cells so you have dead skin on you then aswell anyway😂

Sorry to be gross, but unless you detach and point the shower head your lady bits get a better wash in the bath 🤣

Yesterday’s t-shirt depends on how gross it got. For me personally I wear t-shirts once then done

showered that morning - clean

yesterday morning - gross

no shower before an evening out - gross

it’s quite easy to sort out. It’s literally the basic standard of cleanliness

prelovedusername · 25/08/2025 17:37

Showers do not clean, they sluice. And as a pp said, lady bits not dealt with at all. Light abrasion (flannels) and soap cleans you.

Our parents and grandparents, who did not have the benefit of antibiotics and disinfectants, knew a thing or two about keeping clean.

Denim4ever · 25/08/2025 17:42

GleisZwei · 25/08/2025 16:27

Me too.

Stuff labelled 'bath and shower gel' used in the shower has same function as soap, likewise liquid soap. Doesn't make it exactly the same thing, it just does the same job. I mostly use bar soap or the Dove stuff that's also not technically soap when I'm showering.

In the bath 'bath and shower gel' is normally used as a bubble bath. I suppose for some that means they think they don't need to use any other products to wash/scrub. Again, I use bar soap in the bath and enjoy a bath with bubbles as well.

Would I think I was clean, just with bubbles. Probs not, unless the bath was in addition to an earlier shower and only for relaxation.

But I doubt the OPs MIL is not clean enough by average standards and it wouldn't bother me.

ExtraOnions · 25/08/2025 07:02

Why are you grossed out, does she smell?

Lots of people shower everyday … but you don’t “need” to. Unless you are particularly hot & sweaty, you can go a good few days without smelling.

When I was a kid, in the 70s|80s, we got a bath once a week …and if my Dad ran it, you got 2 inches of water, as that’s what they had “in the war”

Ha ha so true i had my 1st full bath age 21

I’m not sure about that.

I’m more susceptible to thrush if I have a bath.

you can still wash your under carriage under a shower. I thought you weren’t meant to use soaps and shower gels internally

You've got it the wrong way round.
Read any medical site and drs tell you not to use soap on your vulva.
Yes, on your bum, but you can do one without the other.

No one needs a multiple-used flannel on their 'lady bits'.

And yes, showers DO clean. Aim the shower head on your pubes and help to clean yourself with one hand by swishing the water around while holding the shower in the other hand.

Sorry to be so graphic but it seems like it was needed.

Drs tell women never to use soap on their vulvas.

It's not necessary.
