I nearly threw up when I saw it this morning - what a horrible shock.

It's a very small town in the Midlands near a city. Yes it's ex-mining but does reasonable ok now, not deprived eg no contextual offers for my dc for uni, but not massively desirable or trendy. Has a Labour MP now but hasn't always in recent years. Voted for Brexit but only just. In 2019 more people voted against Tories AND Brexit than for them - split the vote so we still got a Tory, but still.

In other words, I did not expect this. It's horrible - looks ugly and badly done even before you get started on the thinking behind it. AIBU to ring the council on Tuesday and ask when they are going to deal with this vandalism?

I did a four hour round-trip on the motorway today too and the amount of flags on bridges was shocking - just make it stop.

Nothing like a bit of classism

Why? Buzz cuts are the fashion these days for kids of all classes! It is the 'in thing' gone has the mullet and the perm on top! Keep up with the fashions please!

Nose rings are from all ethnicities and for all cultures and classes.

Air Force 1s are the staple kids uniform these days.

It's obviously not as...ahem...a black or white an issue as that.

Minorities in this country (and others, obviously) have historically been discriminated against, oppressed, abused, ignored and even killed due to nothing more than the colour of their skin. This still happens today, everywhere from police stops, to housing, education, employment, medical diagnosis, finance, even simple day-to-day interactions...this is not up for debate.

Things are far from perfect, but they're better than they were as society takes actions to redress the balance.

A minority celebrating their culture or their community isn't simply a case of celebrating the colour of their skin, or their heritage. It's about celebrating the progress made. That a black person can be a high ranking police officer, or a corporate CEO, or a bank manager, where for previous generations that was not an option. It's about redress, or being treated equally. Being accepted, while remembering your roots. Being black, or brown or whatever on an equal footing in a society that has historically been preferential to white people and considered you lesser. Breaking stereotypes.

Can people not see why a minority might be proud of that progress, and feel the need to celebrate it.

Being proud of being white is...what? White isn't a culture. White people have never been oppressed in this country just for being white. Don't conflate it with being proud to be English or British or whatever. The only thing unique about being white in England is that you've (knowingly or otherwise) enjoyed the benefits of a society that has been kinder to you and easier for you by virtue of a genetic lottery that granted you a certain skin pigmentation. A white person having a tough life doesn't negate the experience of minority groups.

Celebrating 'being white' in England, a country where people of all colours are as culturally English as you, is to suggest that you are somehow better, more important or more entitled than someone who isn't, by virtue of the colour of your skin. That what the Nazis believed. That's what the KKK believes.

Thankfully it isn't true. A white person in England who's biggest case for celebration is being white must have absolutely nothing else going on in their life.

Maybe im weird but I’ve never felt oppressed or held back by the colour of my skin

Ive can’t remember any racism against me or my family as a child growing up

but i don’t automatically think if someone is rude to me it’s because they are racist I just think they are a wanker or a cunt

but I don’t have an chip on my shoulder because I’m brown and think that everything someone says to me has a racist meaning until proved otherwise

Neither, she has led such a charmed life that something this small genuinely does devastate her.

The long and short of it is, whilst i dont nevessarily approve of this, what i do know is people do not feel listened to, they do not feel heard (look at how snidey, classist, smug and dismissivd 90% of this thread is)

When people do not feel heard, they will make you listen - and thats where the danger starts

What a load of bollocks. It's like you've never heard of the grooming/rape gangs which is still very much on people minds as there still hasn't been an enquiry ( and they'd have been one years ago if it was white gangs preying on Asian girls). There have also been racist murders of white people, they just don't get publicity as doesn't fit the agenda.

I have an issue with the st George flag precisely because the far right thugs appropriated it. Now it makes me cringe.

Exactly this. So much disingenuity in parts of this thread.

Ffs the Edl was disbanded about 10 years ago, people on here so ill informed and unaware!

Amazing! It must've been wonderful for all then.

It was for me and many of my friends and family
I voted for labour
Tony Blair & Gordon Brown

wouldn’t vote for labour now and I do feel politically homeless as labour are so far removed from what I remember them being for

I don't like how the previous poster articulated it, but genuine question - have you seen any videos of middle/upper class presenting people out painting roundabouts?

Or is this another case of certain powerful/influential groups/individuals weaponising a currently hurting working class for their own ends?

lifeonmars100 · 25/08/2025 00:52

Just as well the St George's cross is a very simple design, they would really struggle if it was the Welsh dragon or some other intriicate design or symbol. Is the painting on roundabouts a new flag enthusiast thing? I know they are brandishing them everywhere and draping them around their shoulders at the protests but the roundabout thing had escaped my notice.

Jesus Christ, what made you do that? They caused the NHS issue to start. It was a great time waiting in queues for ambulances and not having any Drs to help.

No it was all me, she genuinely plucked those scenes at random, i made the link with zero help and saw a subtext that obviously 100% without a shadow of a doubt was not there.

How could i be so silly.
