Baby - MIL - XL Bully

Koala98 · 23/08/2025 14:03

MIL has an XL Bully at her house, AIBU to say baby can never visit while the dog is on the property even if shut in a different room or garden?

OP posts:
HappySummerDays · 23/08/2025 14:05

Would you be there with the baby? Or would your partner be there?
Is she a responsible dog owner?

hollyjolly12 · 23/08/2025 14:05

Not unreasonable at all, and I say that as an owner of a medium/large (KC registered) breed of dog and three young children. I would not allow my children to go near one and do not understand why anyone would choose to own one. Stand your ground and don't let anyone tell you you're being unreasonable!

Rosyredapples · 23/08/2025 14:07

Babies can't open doors, but toddlers soon learn to do so, so better to say no you won't ever visit when the dog is there.

WhyAmISoReal · 23/08/2025 14:08

Yanbu. Absolutely not.

Zanatdy · 23/08/2025 14:09

I’m a huge dog lover but I wouldn’t let my baby visit.

thepariscrimefiles · 23/08/2025 14:09

I thought that XL Bullies were banned in the UK. Does your MIL have a certificate of exemption and, if so, does she follow all the rules that are a requirement of that certificate?

Darragon · 23/08/2025 14:10

YANBU but this can't be a new situation, right? So you must have already discussed this with her before the baby arrived? The law changed quite a while back, which means no one should have recently acquired an XL bully.

LimbOnTheBranchBranchOnTheTreeTheTreeInTheBog · 23/08/2025 14:10

Yanbu, I would be exactly the same and I say that as the owner of a large breed.

I wouldn't even go near an XL as an adult.

Beautifulscribbles · 23/08/2025 14:10

Not unreasonable at all. Never would my child (of any age to be honest) be in a property with this dog. All owners seem to think that their dog is too friendly and cuddly.. until it's not. It's always "such a shock" when the worst happens. A small risk is too much risk when you're talking about your actual human child. Stand strong OP.

UsernameShmusername2024 · 23/08/2025 14:11

I wouldn't let my child (or myself!) be anywhere near one, ever.

A responsible dog owner doesn't own an XL bully.

Zodiacrobat · 23/08/2025 14:12

Of course YANBU, anyone who has read the papers about the number of attacks would know to not go near those dogs. I would never let my child in a house with one, as they don’t need to be muzzled indoors.

Is she following all the rules for having an XL?

I am a dog lover and had large breeds before who were amazing with kids, but XL’s are ticking time bombs with the in breeding from Killer Kimbo in the UK.

heartmatters · 23/08/2025 14:12

I have had dogs all my life. Been involved in breed rescue for several gundog breeds. Would never ever be at your MIL's house myself let alone with a child.

Objectrelations · 23/08/2025 14:12

YANBU

Witchywoowoowoo · 23/08/2025 14:13

She'll just have to visit you, that's the choice she made when she bought a bully.

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 23/08/2025 14:13

Absolutely avoid. No brainer.

SparklyGlitterballs · 23/08/2025 14:13

I wouldn't be in her house myself if the dog was there, let alone take a baby there.

Nousernamesleftatall · 23/08/2025 14:16

Yanbu. I wouldn’t go to any house with an XL bully and neither would my dc be allowed. What possessed her?

BeardieWeirdie · 23/08/2025 14:17

MIL will think you’re being silly, the problem is bad owners not bad dogs, and her little Toto would never do anything - he loves children. If you did ever let your child over, she’d ‘accidentally’ leave the door open just to prove her point. YANBU at all.

Iloveeverycat · 23/08/2025 14:20

I wouldn't want to go there let alone take a baby.
I knew a very responsible owner. It attacked his wife for no reason if he wasn't there to get the dog off her she would have been killed. He was devastated but knew he had to have it pts. He had it from a puppy.

JungleRun21 · 23/08/2025 14:20

No child should be left alone with a dog regardless of the breed.
I know enough people bittten by what are classed as family dogs and require hospital treatment.

Youre not unreasonable but you should have the same thoughts about your child being around any dog, not just an XL bully.
Bully breeds are powerful dogs, especially in the wrong hands with people who do not understand their breed or fail to train and control them.

Your MIL should have an exemption certificate to own a categorised XL bully and she should be following all the guidelines regarding muzzling and no off lead exercise as per the government guidelines.

I would not visit the house, let alone take a child there. Why has she got a close bully.?

This with bells on.

OSTMusTisNT · 23/08/2025 14:24

Most dog owners are responsible and most dogs are friendly.....until that one day they aren't and one bite from an XL Bully could cause instant death for a baby or toddler.

You shouldn't really need to ask....
