To have one small glass of red wine at 38 weeks pregnant?

baby2c · 22/08/2025 20:49

I’m not a drinker at all but DH gets a bottle of red once or twice a month and tonight I really fancy just a very small glass, I’m a weirdo (according to DH) who likes ice in red wine on the rare occasion I have it. DH is only having one glass just in case I was to go into labour and he had to drive to hospital. So I was thinking of having a tiny amount with some ice and enjoying sipping it whilst watching tv in my pjs however I’m not sure if this is totally out of order or reasonable? Would you? Or did you? I haven’t touched alcohol at all since finding out I am pregnant at 4 weeks.

I wouldn’t.

britinnyc · 22/08/2025 20:58

It’s fine, I was even told by my dr that it was ok at this point and this was in the US where the recs are very strict.

PeonyPatch · 22/08/2025 20:58

I wouldn’t

IllBeLookingAtTheMoon · 22/08/2025 20:59

There is no safe amount for a foetus to imbibe. So no. On a practical level- it can cause you dehydration, balance problems- not worth it.

I think your bloody husband could wait two weeks though.

MeganM3 · 22/08/2025 20:59

I didn’t when I was pregnant but I wouldn’t judge or worry over a small glass of red. Sure it would be fine.

ZenNudist · 22/08/2025 20:59

The guidelines have got really strict because of all the fuckwits who thought that the advice that small amounts of alcohol are OK also means large amounts are OK.

A small glass of red at 38 weeks is not going to harm your baby. I drank small glasses of wine throughout my pregnancies and my dc are fine.

Growlybear83 · 22/08/2025 20:59

Of course you’re not being unreasonable!

Genuinely interested if you a) truly believe that it is the same as directly feeding a baby a glass of wine and b) what you think the ‘risks’ are?

It's not exactly the same no, but a foetus does not have the capacity to metabolise alcohol. From the NHS website: 'When you drink, alcohol passes from your blood through the placenta to your baby and can seriously affect its development. Your baby does not have a fully developed liver and cannot process alcohol.'
So maybe I worded it somewhat dramatically but what's in your blood will be passed on to the child, especially at that stage of pregnancy.

Dehydration and balance problems from a small glass of red?! 🤯🙄

Err dehydration and balance problems…really?!!

IllBeLookingAtTheMoon · 22/08/2025 21:03

She said she doesn't normally drink.

baby2c · 22/08/2025 21:04

Goodness me I didn’t realise I’d have so many comments so quick.

As for the comment of would I give my baby alcohol through a bottle, erm obviously absolutely not. My 2 year old has never had a drop of alcohol either funnily enough 🙄

Also the person who said my DH could wait two weeks, he could yes but he’s also not living with an alcoholic who is affected by him drinking. Like I said, he has 2 bottles a month, probably 6 glasses a month of red wine. I’d be pretty annoyed if he was drinking past the legal drinking drive limit at this stage of my pregnancy but a glass of wine, I’m not going to deprive him of after he’s worked a 70 hour week for our business.

Im currently 37 weeks pregnant and I wouldn’t, but purely because I’m a worrier about things like that and it would mean it would be pointless as I wouldn’t enjoy it.
However, realistically what harm is it going to do at 38 weeks, the baby is already grown etc so risk of things like fetal alcohol syndrome are not a huge factor; in the past women were advised to drink guiness/port etc in pregnancy for iron etc , so you’re probably absolutely fine to have a small glass!
I would have a glass of zero alcohol wine if I wanted the taste, but to be honest I’m as happy (if not more happy!) with an ice cold can of Pepsi max 😂🙈

nomas · 22/08/2025 20:54

Why not a glass of non Alcock old red?’?

Because it tastes like shit. Honestly, non alcoholic wine is disgusting.

I would and I did. It is honestly completely fine.

changedwoman123 · 22/08/2025 21:05

Of course you can - enjoy it!

Calamitousness · 22/08/2025 21:05

Your fine. Have it and enjoy. Your foetus does not need to metabolise wine. Your liver does it for you both. Totally unlike giving it to a newborn. And yes. Their brain and other organs are fully developed and you’re not going to cause any harm. You need to drink a lot to cause problems. One glass is absolutely fine. As someone else said the advice is none because some women could not interpret small amounts as much previously allowed.

baby2c · 22/08/2025 21:05

Dehydration and balance problems? I mean I know I said I’m not a drinker but I’ve been out with my girl friends before and had a few glasses of wine and been able to walk in a straight line 🤦🏻‍♀️ also I drink 3L of ice cold water a day (my craving) so no risk of dehydration here 😅

MolkosTeenageAngst · 22/08/2025 21:07

Realistically it’s fine. However, I wouldn’t because I know if anything did go wrong between now and the birth I would forever be blaming myself and wondering whether that glass of wine was the reason and even if logically I knew it wasn’t the cause I would still dwell and ruminate on it and hate myself for it, however I have an anxious mind and am always finding ways to blame myself or feel guilty for things! If you are more logical/ pragmatic then that might not be an issue for you!

baby2c · 22/08/2025 21:07

Thanks everyone who’s been reasonable (also the people who say they wouldn’t I’m including in that), the people asking if I’d give my baby it through a bottle etc I just have no words 😂

I am currently sipping my thimble full of Malbec with some crushed ice and my feet up.

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend! X

OP I once posted here that at 37 weeks pregnant I had a small glass of red wine and it wasn’t the only one I’d had during pregnancy either and it was like a bloody witch trial, some posters are unhinged. If they’d known where I lived they’d have been out the front with pitchforks.

sorry I do have one question though. Ice with Malbec ?!

Pinepeak2434 · 22/08/2025 21:08

With my first baby I had alcohol before knowing I was pregnant. It wasn’t much just a small glass of red wine.

BrickSnakes · 22/08/2025 21:09

Loads of people say it’s fine to do, but I never risked it because IF there were repercussions it simply wouldn’t be worth it and I would never have forgiven myself. I didn’t drink whilst breastfeeding either and everyone says it’s okay to have a glass, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it!

ETA seen you’ve already done it, so fair enough!

EwwSprouts · 22/08/2025 21:09

Just as your DH isn't having much as he may have to drive, I wouldn't in case everything started and I went into hospital smelling of alcohol.

twobabiesandapup · 22/08/2025 21:10

A bit late to this thread but came on to say of course you should! I would (and did at the late stage), hope you are enjoying it! 🥂

You don’t smell like an old soak off one small glass of red wine 🤣🤣
