Cooking fried breakfast at home shouldn't be allowed?

I know I'll get flamed for this, but AIBU to feel so completely annoyed when anyone suggests cooking sausages, bacon or at worst a full fried breakfast at home?

Now don't get me wrong, I enjoyed a friend breakfast or the odd bacon sandwich in a cafe but absolutely not at home.

I can't cope with the awful cooking smell that comes from them. It sticks to everything including my hair which means I can smell it all day. The smell lingers throughout the house all day and we have any visitors I feel mortified by it.

A fried breakfast is even worse because not only do you get the awful smell but the amount of washing up that comes along with it. The need to use so many pans!

Christ, that's controlling.

If my partner tried to tell me what I could/couldn't cook and eat in my own home, I'd be ending the relationship.

Yes I am controlling and not ashamed of it either! 🙃

(That's an ironic smiley btw for those who are scared for my family😅)

Personally I love a cooked breakfast and just open the kitchen door. We don’t have an open plan house, so easy to contain smells, but tbh it probably wouldn’t bother me anyway.

However, your house your rules op!

If the clean up is too much, what on earth are they doing in that kitchen?

As I said above, I use a spray of olive oil in the base of a pan. Good quality nitrate-free bacon that isn't greasy, eggs. No bad smells and no mess. Someone is doing something wrong if there's anything other than a frypan to go in the wash after.

OdisseanQueen · 22/08/2025 11:50

I cook delicious smelly food every day, sometimes multiple times a day…

Strawberrydelight78 · 22/08/2025 11:53

I used the air fryer and grill and poach the eggs. You don't have to fry it there's other ways to cook one.

Strawberrydelight78 · 22/08/2025 11:54

Plus all food smells. I can still smell the Italian meatballs I cooked last night

I only cook smelly food. I don't like any other kind!

JHound · 22/08/2025 12:13

I don’t mind a cooked breakfast but bacon really stinks when it’s being cooked.

(Bacon from pork I mean. Turkey bacon is just fine.)

Ah c'mon.
The smell of frying bacon is divine.

InMyShowgirlEra · 22/08/2025 12:32

So is your kitchen for show then?

If I want to eat something I cook it. Most foods have a smell when cooked.

You are being totally unreasonable. Do you cook at all? I find bolognese sauce lingers for hours as does any cooking smell. Get an extractor fan. Food cooked at home is always better, you know how it was cooked, what in and what the ingredients were!

Grammarnut · 22/08/2025 12:36

Comedycook · 22/08/2025 10:24

It's the frying imo. It's totally unnecessary. You can cook it in the oven or air fryer. I do the sausages, bacon, hash browns, mushrooms and tomato in the air fryer. I make scrambled egg in a pan on the hob and heat the beans in the microwave. No horrible smells.

Why do you eat this food if it smells horrible to you. You are aware that the smell is part of our ability to taste?

DH cooked one this morning, bacon and black sausage in air fryer and scrambled egg on hob....no one at work has mentioned my hair smelling of bacon....

Well they wouldn't would they? Unless they're extremely rude!

mamagogo1 · 22/08/2025 12:43

What the??? Have you not heard about extractor fans???

I love a bacon sandwich on Saturday mornings and it’s completely wasteful money to go out , anyway my coffee is better than shop bought

Tiredofwhataboutery · 22/08/2025 12:43

Air fryer for us. I love a cooked breakfast. Takes about 15 minutes. Eggs are done in a pan.

LillyPJ · 22/08/2025 12:44

Put the extractor fan on or open a window.

mamagogo1 · 22/08/2025 12:46

You should smell my kitchen when I make kedgeree Grin

The food doesn’t smell horrible, sizzling grease smells horrible and clings to fabric. With an air fryer it just smells of bacon

i think days of this are numbered
if we want special breakfast I keep it simple and we have scrambled eggs and smoked salmon
Be in charge of your kitchen!!

Surely whoever is doing the cooking at any given time is 'in charge of the kitchen'?

If you don't live alone, it's not just your kitchen.

ETA: Although it's not like eggs and fish aren't smelly.

Westfacing · 22/08/2025 12:58

YABVU - fried breakfast is a human right.

Extractor fan on, kitchen door closed, window open and away you go! 🍳🥓🍅🌭🍄🍞

milveycrohn · 22/08/2025 12:59

We have a cooke breakfast on a Sunday.
I use one large frying pan for DH (egg, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, black pudding (his favourite; i never eat it). I put the fan on to avoid smells.
For myself, I do a scrambled egg, cooked in the microwave!

narcASD · 22/08/2025 13:04

I’d much rather smell fried bacon that those dreadful incense, sticks!
I grill or air fry my bacon and a fried egg shouldn’t smell if you use good quality pans with a little oil.

InTheRW · 22/08/2025 13:07

No fried breakfasts in this house. I’m with you OP! They are for holidays in hotels only ;-)
