Cooking fried breakfast at home shouldn't be allowed?

luckysdadsway · 22/08/2025 10:19

I know I'll get flamed for this, but AIBU to feel so completely annoyed when anyone suggests cooking sausages, bacon or at worst a full fried breakfast at home?

Now don't get me wrong, I enjoyed a friend breakfast or the odd bacon sandwich in a cafe but absolutely not at home.

I can't cope with the awful cooking smell that comes from them. It sticks to everything including my hair which means I can smell it all day. The smell lingers throughout the house all day and we have any visitors I feel mortified by it.

A fried breakfast is even worse because not only do you get the awful smell but the amount of washing up that comes along with it. The need to use so many pans!

I cook mine on the bbq.

Lifestooshort71 · 22/08/2025 10:35

Totally agree with OP but wouldn't dream of criticising anyone else from doing it. I don't mind the smell but can't stand the grease that's left behind - all over the hob and the splashback mainly. Yes, I know I can cook bacon in the oven but hate the thought of grease-spattered shelves, and no, I don't have an air fryer (nor want one). We have a couple of good greasy spoons locally that do brilliant fry-ups so take our custom there.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 22/08/2025 10:36

We sometimes have sausage or bacon sandwiches but I cook them in the oven.

ImGoingUpstairsToTakeOffMyHat · 22/08/2025 10:37

I’ve found my people!

Totally agree OP, the smell is terrible. Also by the time you buy all the ingredients you could have popped down to Morrisons cafe to have one cooked for you for the cheaper price e of £3.50

Devilsmommy · 22/08/2025 10:39

My husband would be horrified if I said we couldn't cook fried breakfast at home🤣 with regars to the smell, that's what extractor fans are for

luckysdadsway · 22/08/2025 10:39

Just to add, this was obviously lighthearted! Everyone is obviously welcome to cook as they wish in their own home. It's in my home it bothers me!

You're making me hungry. I do it all in 1 big pan. Sausages first then shove them to the side, bacon next, then black pudding, fried slice and eggs last. Not a fan of beans, tomatoes, shrooms etc. Back door and windows open. It's fine.

Faineante · 22/08/2025 10:40

Oh, @luckysdadsway … I’m afraid you’re using inadequate tools!

  1. You need a really good frying pan - if high quality non-stick on a heavy base works for you, try that.
  2. You need to use the right oil. Again experiment to see which oil doesn’t spit or send up black smoke at a high temperature. (I tend to use olive oil for everything.)
  3. Buy better quality bacon that isn’t full of water and nasty additives that immediately leak out during frying. (This is much simpler than grilling bacon.)
  4. Remove your eggs from the fridge so they’re not freezing cold when they hit the hot oil.
  5. Open the kitchen windows and close the door if there is one.
  6. As others have said - you need a much better extractor fan.
  7. Cover your hair with a scarf and don’t wear clothes you intend to wear outside the house!

A fried breakfast at home should be a source of enjoyment - you’re just doing it wrong.

This is what I do, do as many things on the one frying pan as possible 😁

crumblingschools · 22/08/2025 10:41

Do you not have any ventilation?

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 22/08/2025 10:42

Hadalifeonce · 22/08/2025 10:27

The only part of a full English that gets fried in our house are the eggs. Even so, we close all the doors and open the window, that generally stops any odours getting into the rest of the house.

Same. Everything else is in the airfryer, or before that, the grill

We regularly cook curries, chilli and other flavoured foods and I can’t say the smell lingers though. Windows and back door open, rarely even need the extractor fan on.

Catsandcannedbeans · 22/08/2025 10:42

I don’t like to cook them but whenever we go to my dad’s house he always does a great one. Only thing he can cook. I’m pregnant right now and he gives me extra bacon because he genuinely thinks it’s good for the baby. He always tells me every time I go he used to cook it for my mum every morning when she was pregnant and that’s why we’re all tall.

AlligatorTears · 22/08/2025 10:43

Totally agree. I lose my shit when someone brings home a pack of bacon because I know what’ll ensue 😂

Oganesson118 · 22/08/2025 10:43

I think it can be done without stinking the whole house out but I do hate the smell if it's done improperly. My brother in law stayed with us and cooked bacon in butter every morning. I was 32 weeks pregnant and it made me want to throw up every time I went into the kitchen. Didn't help that he never washed up after himself...

SomeOfTheTrouble · 22/08/2025 10:44

Well you can do what you want in your house, but I think banning other people from cooking what they want in their houses is overkill 😂. I haven’t fried sausage and bacon for years though, I do it in the airfryer and the smell in minimal.

Rubyupbeat · 22/08/2025 10:44

I do cooked breakfast once a month, my sone and his partner come round for it. I don't fry anything, eggs are scrambled or poached, no meat at all and veggie sausages are done in the airfryer, cold avocados and tinned tomatoes, grilled mushrooms and toast.

Yachtingaroundtheworldiwish · 22/08/2025 10:45

Almost every type of food smells when you cook. What about a bolognaise, curry, a chilli, or even a roast? I find garlic permeates far more than bacon.

tripleginandtonic · 22/08/2025 10:45

Nope fried breakfast on a weekend in winter is great. Who cares about the smell, it tastes delicious.

anyolddinosaur · 22/08/2025 10:45

Try cleaning the filter on your extractor fan.

Coffeeishot · 22/08/2025 10:45

I know you were being light hearted and just having a moan op but if your hair really smells of bacon id consider a better extractor fan.

BustyLaRoux · 22/08/2025 10:46

I’ve stopped living with my DP as our living preferences were not compatible. Funnily enough one of the things which I couldn’t tolerate was the constant smell from frying, roasting and grilling meat. I do eat meat, but not every day. Don’t mind the smell of chicken, but his autistic DS had started to think of himself as the family chef and decided he was going to fry lardons or roast duck for pretty much every meal. The smell and the mess became a constant feature. I have some sensory issues around smells (and mess!) and this was utterly intolerable for me because it wasn’t one fry up at the weekend (would still be upsetting but I could probably cope if only once a week), but every damn day.

I moved out.

julesover40 · 22/08/2025 10:46

Comedycook · 22/08/2025 10:24

It's the frying imo. It's totally unnecessary. You can cook it in the oven or air fryer. I do the sausages, bacon, hash browns, mushrooms and tomato in the air fryer. I make scrambled egg in a pan on the hob and heat the beans in the microwave. No horrible smells.

This, exactly how we do it. Although we never (or very rarely) have a cooked breakfast we do enjoy the occasional full English for dinner

Coffeeishot · 22/08/2025 10:46

anyolddinosaur · 22/08/2025 10:45

Yes this i dish wash mine

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 22/08/2025 10:47

Strange thread.

You should be allowed to cook whatever you like in your own home. Unless you are a cannibal, of course.

If you don't like cooking fried breakfasts in your home, don't.

wominzy · 22/08/2025 10:47

I rarely do cooked breakfast, but if I do, Everything goes in the oven here , including the eggs which I put in ramekins and bake them, or just whisk and put in a shallow dish (like fritatta)! All turns out great and little odour around the rooms.

For those who might be interested - a brand of candle called "Chef candle" is the best thing ever for getting rid of lingering aromas in the kitchen. Works for me anyway. Available from Jeff Bezos if you're interested.
