Cooking fried breakfast at home shouldn't be allowed?

I know I'll get flamed for this, but AIBU to feel so completely annoyed when anyone suggests cooking sausages, bacon or at worst a full fried breakfast at home?

Now don't get me wrong, I enjoyed a friend breakfast or the odd bacon sandwich in a cafe but absolutely not at home.

I can't cope with the awful cooking smell that comes from them. It sticks to everything including my hair which means I can smell it all day. The smell lingers throughout the house all day and we have any visitors I feel mortified by it.

A fried breakfast is even worse because not only do you get the awful smell but the amount of washing up that comes along with it. The need to use so many pans!

Cook everything in the oven, even the eggs. Heat the beans on the hob or in the microwave. Open the windows and doors and light a cooks candle after you've finished cooking. Do the washing up soon after you've eaten.

I have a big family so eating out just costs more...my kitchen always smells of lovely homemade food (my neighbour says it makes them hungry lol) when I do fry ups I open all the windows and close the kitchen door...and leave the extractor fan on after I finished. Yes the smell usually lingers on your clothes so I do get changed if I'm going out.

wominzy
I think we cross posted but we have the same idea.

AugustSlippedAwayIntoAMomentInTime · 22/08/2025 10:50

YABU and ridiculous to think this is your decision to make for everyone else

Cranberryavocado · 22/08/2025 10:50

What 😂this is madness, we have a cooked breakfast every weekend. Nothing better than the smell of bacon cooking on a sunday morning.

ForHazelHelper · 22/08/2025 10:51

I’m a vegetarian and my DH and DC aren’t and secretly I agree with you! But what is worse is when they cook fish. The smell of mackerel 🤢
I never complain though! Well, not much

I agree - better to have a cooked breakfast in a cafe and let someone else deal with it!

I prefer to know the quality of what I am eating, cafe fry ups usually look horrendous. All those moaning about smell etc., do they not cook curries etc which smell far more?

lotsofpatience · 22/08/2025 10:52

Yes sure. Let's police what people cook in their homes just because OP says so.
Give your head a wobble, lovely.

A cooked breakfast cooked entirely on the hob and grill is the norm in our house on Saturday morning.

I’ve never given the smell a second thought.

CautiousLurker01 · 22/08/2025 10:54

Or you can get an airfryer (and paper liners). The smells are largely contained within the fryer, the cooking time is much reduced, and the bacon and sausages tend to come out better. My DH has a full english every weekend, both days, and I can barely smell it unless I walk into the kitchen as he serves up… in which case an open window clears it before he’s even cleared his plate.

Tbh a ‘fried’ breakfast doesn’t really smell any worse to me than a curry or a casserole. The worst smells for me are cauliflower which seems to fill the house and hang around for hours after cooking it!!

BauhausOfEliott · 22/08/2025 10:55

If I'm happy to eat something, I'm happy to smell it cooking. I don't find the smell of bacon and sausages unpleasant and I don't find it lingers, but I guess it might depend on the layout and ventilation of your house.

I'm always amazed by the number of Mumsnetters who are very sensitive to smells, though. Mumsnet seems to have much higher proportion than the general population of people who react very dramatically to everyday food smells, and/or have to go to bed with a migraine or get an asthma attack if they sit next to some who wears perfume.

blueclip · 22/08/2025 10:56

Yab vvv u

it takes a small number of mins to fry an egg / fried bread

sausage in oven

bacon in grill

cook mushrooms / tomatoes in a pan

toast in toaster

that doesn’t cause any problems

it would be grounds for divorce in my house if one of us objected to that delicious cook up!

JudgeJ · 22/08/2025 10:57

Also if the pans are washed pretty quickly afterwards that gets rid of a lot of the smell.

My favourite breakfast is scrambled eggs, undyed smoked haddock and croissants, now that smell does linger even if I put the fishy pan straight into cold water but it's totally worth it. Any fish bits, skin or bones go straight into an outside bin, the tip about using cold water was one of the best I've ever had.

Wishimaywishimight · 22/08/2025 10:58

Shouldn't be "allowed" by whom? Fair enough if you don't like it but it would be a bit silly to have some sort of rule.

I prefer to grill sausages and bacon rather than fry but I do enjoy a fried egg alongside though.

luckysdadsway · 22/08/2025 10:59

Thank you for the cooking candle tip- I've purchased one on your recommendation!

We are currently away at the moment and the smell still lingers so I'm not sure it's my extractor fan. We have poached eggs, grilled bacon and sausages. Potentially I'm just super sensitive to the smells!

Curry, chilli, garlic etc doesn't bother me.

On the rare occasions we have bacon or sausages we do them outside on the gas barbecue because I hate the smell so much!

Mumsnet has a disproportionate number of the population who are over-sensitive to most things and enjoy feeling superior with their drama-llama antics.

luckysdadsway · 22/08/2025 10:39

Just to add, this was obviously lighthearted! Everyone is obviously welcome to cook as they wish in their own home. It's in my home it bothers me!

Well I hope you don't make anyone in your home feel bad for cooking themselves fried breakfast.

I can't imagine living in a home where I'm only 'allowed' to cook bland smelling foods.

beAsensible1 · 22/08/2025 11:00

Can you not just close the door to the kitchen to keep the smell out of the rest of the house?

If you cook food there will be food smells, homes are meant to be lived in. So they usually have one smell or another at some
points just use the extractor and open the windows

I like a cooked breakfast every now and then if it’s a lounging sort of day with family.

Carandache18 · 22/08/2025 11:02

One of DH's birthday presents was a parcel of Arbroath Smokies. I don't think OP would cope.

Greysowhat · 22/08/2025 11:03

You are not being unreasonable because I hold the same stance. NO frying in my house! The smell is too much. The clean up is too much. The food is a health hazard. Anyone wants a fry they can go out and have it in a greasy spoon.

BeardofHagrid · 22/08/2025 11:03

Fire off an email to Starmer, I’m sure he’d be thrilled to ban this for you.

Leilaandtheloggerheads · 22/08/2025 11:03

ScarlettOYara · 22/08/2025 10:27

Do you only cook very bland food with no smell, usually?

This. You can’t just blame fried breakfast in particular. Absolutely loads of foods smell when cooking. And it’s a house, it’s for living in, not getting your knickers in a twist in case Mrs jones pops round and, god forbid, can smell your bacon ffs.

One of my favourite meals is fajitas, but they smell. So what? It’s a kitchen, it’s my house, and it’s what my cooking equipment is there for! I need to eat, and I’m not going to just have boiled veg every night in case there’s a smell for a little while 🙄 or pay over the odds to eat out every time I want something with a bit of flavour.

So glad I don’t live with someone with that attitude, how draining!

moto748e · 22/08/2025 11:03

I daren't ask how you feel about curry smells!
