What do you think of the flags?

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

We had flags out for the various jubilees and coronations. Street parties etc. But this use of the flag comes from hate of others not love of our country. Are some people really unable to see the difference?

The "obtuse" word - again. Same old direction. Flying a flag and being patriotic is only a problem, if you're English. Celebrating St George's day is the only piss taking Saints day. Every culture has bad apples, without exception. However, the history of England is thee most denigrated one, next to the US, of course. When the denigration comes from within, I find it depressingly apologetic. There is a time and a place for apologies and reparation - its expected longevity, with regards to England, is ridiculous.

No it isn't. I love seeing the English flag flying when the football's playing, or on St George's Day. Why is intent such a hard concept for some to grasp?

You see what happens when an immigrant posts a positive experience of living here - zilch acknowledgement.

If you think that economic stress in our country is caused by the money used to house these people you are delusional. You have been taken in by the simplistic, emotionally charged ‘explanations’ for complex problems spouted by the likes of the Daily Mail, Nige and Tommy.

The fact is that immigration is a positive thing for our economy. It contributes to our economy and to things like the NHS and other services.

Things that DO cause tax rises and stress on the economy:
Tax cuts for the mega wealthy and corporations.
Aging population.
National Debt and deficit
Global crises (COVID, wars, Brexit)
Mismanagement of public finances.

What it costs to house immigrants is TINY in comparison. A drop in the ocean.

Please redirect your anger to the above. Stop scapegoating the immigrant and stop being part of the growing division in our country!

If you are are English the only acceptable time to fly a St George's cross is when England play football and St George's day. All other times you are a racist.

Even on St George's day it will be viewed with suspicion, and you will be told he wasnt even english. Though they never point out that St andrew wasnt Scottish.

The English white working class are truly despised and it seems entirely acceptable to treat them with contempt.

Go ahead and fly it on St George's Day. Football etc. Literally no one is stopping you. Others will be too. If you're doing it just to be patriotic, and because you're supporting your country at sport or whatever, who cares what anyone else thinks?

but the situation in Birmingham is the result of a legal case over equal pay not financial mismanagement - plenty of Tory run councils also going under like Slough - so it’s hardly a single party issue. Let’s see how those Reform councils get on - they seem to have started so well!

Firstly, not all racists are working class. Farage is hardly a man of the people.

It also entirely depends on what the “white working class” are being treated with contempt for.

Being working class doesn’t absolve you of personal responsibility.

Some of us are from deprived backgrounds, and still manage to not: assume black people are paedophiles because they’re in a park, incite racial violence, use flags to intimidate people, set mosques/hotels on fire.

If you’re working class and a dick, you’re still a dick.

Ask yourself WHY it’s seen as a bit cringe to fly the English flag.
